The crackling thunder of fire rumbled below. The black of the trees was engulfed by yellow. Gusts of heat jetted upward and tossed Larkin about as he flew, beating his little wings as fast as they would go and depending on the rising heat to help keep him aloft. Yellow and red reflections battled in his wildly excited green eyes.
With a despairing groan and an explosion of splinters and sparks a tree collapsed into the flames. Swirling, smoky heat billowed up and tumbled Larkin over in the air. He dropped from the sky and disappeared from sight.
Maniacal laughter, childishly high-pitched, was faint under the flames' roar.
A few minutes later something small and black burst from the fire and Larkin, covered with soot and laughing still, sprinted across the shimmering desert toward the temple.

Iionoir woke from his daily nap and shook his dusty coat, stretching afterwards. He peered around with curious green eyes, wondering what woke him. The shade his special tree provided him seemed to be gone and the sun pierced through his dark coat. He shivered, displeased by this and stood.
A brightly colored, devilish male stood nearby, cackling for some reason. Noir frowned slightly, wondering what the big deal was, when a tiny black enigma trailed by.
"What was that?" he queried.

He stopped running abruptly and rolled rapidly head-over-heels, eventually skidding to a stop. The sand behind him was streaked with black. Some of his maroon and yellow coat showed through the soot. He coughed, blinked, turned around, and with a lazy smile proceeded to roll in the sand in an attempt to clean himself.

Iionoir trotted forward, his body still overcome with lack of sleep despite his nap. His ears lay flat against his childlike skull, clearly showing that he disapproved greatly of this newfound sunlight.
Approaching the strange soot-covered male, he stared at him whilst he cleaned his coat. "Are you crazy?" he asked him in a matter-of-fact tone. It wasn't meant to be an insult, he was genuinely worried about the other child's sanity.

Crazy? He stopped rolling and looked up at the other young Malu, his head tilted to the side and his nose wrinkled in thought.
"I don't think I am." He sat up and shook himself, dislodging a cloud of black. "Did you see the fire?" Grinning he pointed to the forest a distance away, which was black and glowing yellow.

Zelanithus walked up, his eyes were on the fire, or rather, what was a fire. He didn't seem to notice the other malu till he suddenly came to a stop near and then turned looking at the soot covered malu.
"Hey, where you in there when that thing was blazing?" When he spoke he actually sounded interested which was not something that normally happened with him. He had a weird accent. It was hard to place and his sounded like his voice a sort of 'bite' to it some how.
He glanced over at Iionoir who he vaguely recognized. "I've seen you somewhere before."

He nodded at Zelanithus eagerly. "I was flying over it and I fell in it."
Shaking himself again Larkin sighed at the sand. It seemed cold after the furnace that had been the forest fire. He had dug it up some when rolling, and underneath the top layer it was cooler because the sun hadn't gotten to it. Not really paying attention to the others, he picked himself up and moved over a couple of feet. Satisfied, he sat down heavily and started brushing at his coat with his paws in an attempt to clean it.

"Yes, I saw it," Iionoir responded coldly. "You killed my tree. -MY- tree," he emphasized. With a flick of his tail he plopped himself down on the ground with a "humph". With a shiver of his cool-colored coat he perked his ears forward upon his skull, a proud gleam in his lime-coloured orbs.

Pausing in his cleaning, Larkin furrowed his brow at Iionoir. "I did not," he said. "I saw the fire and I went over to it. Didn't start it."
He eyed Noir curiously for a few moments, wondering what his problem was. Trees were all right, but they kind of got in the way. Larkin thought that the desert would have been much nicer if it was empty. Flat sand, no shadows to obscure the sun's rays. His own green eyes met Iionoir's uncertainly and then he looked away, absently rubbing his coat and watching the soot settle in the sand.
