Reddish-orange tinted fur glinted in the sweltering sunlight as the oddly-colored stallion moved into the shade of a tree, flat golden hues focused on nothing but the ground before him as he sighed. Of course, he loved this new land- it was without war, without pollution, without corruption or bloodshed... but he had no purpose here. He couldn't fight to protect anyone... he didn't have anything dear to him to defend, and it was taking its toll on his conscience. What was he supposed to do, here? He felt so out of place with all of his battle scars and fighting skills...
In a moment of desperation, he almost found himself wishing for the company of his old friends... for the days when they fought to protect the earth. Then he shook his head, snorting loudly.

A group of butterflies scattered in all directions as hooves came down upon the flowers they rested on. A curious muzzle was lowered to sniff the beautiful plants and wavy, brown hair followed. Sky-blue eyes roamed the field, watching the tiny creatures that had once been on the flowers come back to her. They seemed to think she was one of their own since she had wings exactly like theirs. One of them landed on her soft muzzle, but its legs tickled her and she snorted. She loved the company of these playful butterflies, but she also wanted to have the company of her own. The alicorn slowly walked across the celestial field of flowers towards the crystal clear stream for she thirst for its delightful taste.

A soft noise drew his attention away from his self-pitying musings- he'd been wallowing in it again, he thought with a twinge of disgust- and he looked up curiously to see another mare some distance away.
Did all mares have different attributes like this? he wondered absently. He'd met one with feathered wings, one with none, and now one with a horn, butterfly wings, and a tail like his. Well, not exactly like his, the flame was what seemed to me attracting the curious attention of all the other soquili he'd met- but the closest to his he'd seen yet.
Taking a small step forward, he eyed her with a nonchalant interest before raising his head and baying a soft greeting to her.

Her ears flickered back and forth as the wind carried a sound to them. She recognized it as a greeting, so she stopped in her tracks. Curiously, the butterfly-winged mare looked around for the one who had called out to her. She spotted him near some honey trees, standing proudly. He was a strange one too, his coat was reddish-orange. There were strange markings and scars on his body. The stallion's eyes seemed to burn with fire just like that of his tail. His tail-it was a flame! The mare stared in amazement and shock. If anyone could of guessed, this stallion was a fighter. She was really curious about him now. Taking a few steps forward, she called out to him.

Content at least that he hadn't scared her off, he offered what he hoped was a disarming smile. He was sure he looked odd- a scarred and tattered brute like himself with a gentle smile offered to an approaching mare, but he'd never been emotionally withdrawn like some of his comrades- Cloud in particular. Smiling wasn't unusual, he just normally had no reason to.
He eyed her smaller form with a suppressed curiosity, inquisitive golden hues alighting first on her wings, then her horn, then settling on her tail. His head tilted to one side in a childish form of innocent confusion, although his smile didn't disappear as she approached, and he dipped his head politely as she came to a halt before him. "Greetings, miss."

The stallion was big for his size, she was surprised that it didn't frighten her, it just made her a bit cautious. He gave her a warm smile which made her more comfortable around him. Somehow, she managed to take her eyes off of his flaming tail and scars.
He bowed politely to her, another surprise. She couldn't help but smile and bow back, "Greetings to you as well. Please, call me Nalani." It felt good to finally meet someone after being alone for a few days. "I've never seen around these parts of the lands. Where did you come from?" The mare had the urge to ask about his tail, but she felt it was impolite.

Her reaction, and the lack of fear in it, set him at ease. The last thing he wanted to do was scare off a mare, and develop the reputation of a monster or freak among the others of his kind in this new land. "It's a pleasure to meet you, miss Nalani. My name is Nanaki, but some prefer to call me Red." He shifted his weight slightly at the question, pondering himself on how to answer it. He wasn't entirely sure what this place was compared to his old home... it seemed to be a kind of alternate universe. Was this how the Lifestream had chosen to reconstruct the planet? Did the Lifestream even exist here?
He paused a moment, realizing he'd been silent for a few minutes, and offered her a sheepish smile. "To tell you the truth, I'm not entirely sure. My world seems to have been an alternate universe to this one... I have no idea how I go here." He saw her eyes lingering on his battle scars and flamed appendage, offering a reassuring gaze as he explained. "The world I came from was torn apart by war and corruption. I fought to save what remained."

Nalani smiled and sung her tail slowly, "It's a pleasure meeting you as well, Red." After asking him where he had come from, she noticed that he seemed to hesitate and remained silently for a few minutes, but he smiled and replied. "An alternate universe?" He caught her glancing at his scars and tail. Nanaki assured her that his world was filled with wars and he had fought to save what remained. She looked down, ashamed for staring and she gently stomped her hoof. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to stare. What happened to your world is terrible...sorry that you had to go through all those things."

The kind and gentle concern she showed him was enough to make him smile, and he shook his head lightly, stepping forward to reassure her that she had done nothing wrong. "You don't have to apologize, miss Nalani, it's quite all right. My appearance is not something I'm proud of, but it's what I am. My past is no less of who I am, and I regret nothing." He offered a small grin as he paused, briefly pondering his words before hastening to make a comment in reassurance. "I'm happy to be in a place that is at peace, where delicate things of beauty can exist without being harmed."

Many would think he was a trouble maker by the looks of him, but inside he was kind and he was such a gentleman. She smiled, "Well, I'm glad you like it here. It is very peaceful and beautiful. I've been here for a while and I still find myself amazed by all the wonderful things around." She tilted her head, letting her forelock fall to the side. "Have you been to the mountains, rivers, or the beach? If not, I'll show you around...that is if you'd like." She wondered if he had met any of the other soquili in the area.

He was slightly surprised by the offer, although not at all unhappy- quite the opposite. "No, in fact, I haven't had much of a chance to explore yet. I would love that if you could tolerate me for that long, miss Nalani," he grinned sheepishly. "I've been told that my lacking in conversational skills can be very irritating." He wasn't sure how much he trusted that Yuffie girl's opinion on the matter, but he was joking for the most part.

She couldn't help but chuckle, "Oh don't worry about it. I can tolerate a lot of things." Remembering her friend, Ravi, and the crazy colt, Faust, she shook her head and smiled. "So where would you like me to take you first? You've already seen the clearing, as we are here now. There's the Plains, Forests, Beach, Mountains, Desert...not much there, and then there's the rivers and the lake. Oh and the village...but I've never been there, so I don't know much about it. I've only heard that the two leggers live there." She gave him a girlish smile and hoped she didn't make it hard for him to decide on where he would like to go.

"Well, that's good to hear." He returned the smile with a slightly lopsided grin, glancing upwards as he considered the question. It was good to have a friend again, he mused, and one when he wasn't in a situation where they were simply allies and forced to work together to survive. He supposed he'd never really known what it was like to have a friend of his kind. "Hmm, well, the sun will be setting soon... how about the beach? That'll be a nice place to watch it."

He made a great choice because she loved the sea and it was her favorite place to be. "Great, come on and follow me. We'll have to pass the river in order to reach the beach. It's really beautiful there." She turned around and gracefully trotted off. Turning her head to look back, she made sure he was following her. Nalani didn't want her new friend to get lost.
