Vital Stats____________//

Name: Caitlin Elspeth Gunn
Rank: Royal Naval Lieutenant
Nicknames: None
Occupation: Naval Engineer
Age: 25
Birthday: March 23rd 1981
Birthplace: Salisbury, England
Height: 5'7"
Weight: Can't remember...

Appearance: Wavy, unnoticable dark reddish-brown hair that falls to mid-upper arm; sometimes braided back, and always in a bun when on duty. She has sea eyes, varying between green and blue depending on the light reflected off them. Not particularly pretty except when she smiles; she also has a small v-shaped scar under her left eye from an engineering accident.
Hobbies: sailing, making things, CHESS! and riding.
Likes: boats, horses, cats; clockwork things, the colours yellow (but not to wear) and dark green, sappy movies, neatness, windy days, being able to speak one's mind,
Dislikes: Messy people, impoliteness, the inability to keep a 'stiff upper lip' and moaning, horror books/movies, feyness, little dogs (she calls them 'rats on leads'), brash Americans.

Personality: Caitlin is a quiet person, but nevertheless sensible and practical when needs be. She has a strict regimen and ideas of correctness and incorrectness, such as being impolite or improper. But this comes from her military training; underneath (though it RARELY shows) she enjoys having a good time on her occasional nights out, discussing silly things as a change from the formality she exists in at sea, and is a kind person. She's not past being selfish sometimes (okay quite a bit of the time), but tries not to be. When all is said and done, of course, you must look out for number one. Being in the Navy, she has a surprising capacity for alcohol that one wouldn't think to look at her...

Background_________________//

Caitlin was brought up in middle class England, the youngest child with three older brothers. Surprisingly it was to their little sister that they brought their bikes to be fixed, their radios to retune. She went to an all girls boarding school in Salisbury, where she was born, in hopes that it would make her more ladylike; her father was in the navy and her mother a housewife, but ever so eager that her only daughter should be gentle and well brought up, not the tomboy with chain grease smeared on her face and a spanner in hand. The older boys ended up in business, one even disappointing terribly and going off to be an actor. But all four enjoyed riding and sailing, the latter in their little Mirror dinghy named Deuce and the former at their cousin's stables in Kent.
Caitlin studied Maths and Physics, but did not go onto university; instead choosing to go into the Naval College at Dartmouth for officer training at the age of 18. Her mother was shocked that her little girl whom she had taught to bake and sew was now going to join the military; her father was seceretly pleased, for his good name in the Navy would be carried on.
She was currently in her second ship within the Navy after graduating from Dartmouth as a Lieutenant (that's pronouced left-en-ant, by the way, Americans!), and oddly respected by her fellow engineers as a hardworking and dedicated person, perhaps not brilliant but making up for it. However that is her working persona they admire; a lot of the time she is convenientely 'forgotten' from the crowd, and left behind and out of social events.
She had often been the same way at school; she wasn't in to the 'girly' things the others were, and often spent long hours working on her own little projects, on her own. This was part of the reason she decided to join the Navy; she knew it had become a great deal more 'equal', and she wouldn't be 'the odd one out' with her love of mechanics and strategy games such as chess or Risk.
But now it was starting to happen again; Caitlin wasn't quite sure why, maybe it was her one of her own personality traits that was so conversational-less or repelling, but slowly she became more and more excluded again. She is a little bitter about this, but puts a cheerful face on things; you have to take what comes, keep a stiff upper lip on situations like this, and live your own life. She worked hard for her working respect; but no-one has respect for her own self.

Backstory : Arrival_________//

Lieutenant Caitlin Gunn saluted smartly to the PO and walked down the gangplank, rucksack swung carelessly over her shoulder. At least she was changed out of that heavy uniform, even if it was tropical whites? She squinted suddenly as she came out of the shadow of the ship, and scrabbled for her sunglasses hooked in the top of her white shirt. The colourful port town of Bermuda lay before her, bathed in bright morning sunshine; not that much of morning though, seeing as she had missed the rest of the shore party leaving first thing. But she hadn?t really wanted to leave with those guys; the rest of the engineering section had a huge plan to spend their two days ashore drinking hard and partying hard, like most of the sailors who docked here. As usual, they had convientely forgotten to include her in their group; but she had a better plan for today.
Walking out of the naval dockyard the woman sauntered onwards along the pier fronts, scanning the signs and the wrinkled, tanned locals sitting by their boats. She looked almost like any other tourist in the busy town: she was wearing a bright sky blue string top with her white shirt done up loosely over it, sleeves rolled back to the elbow. Olive green trousers that did up mid calf, and a pair of tatty old trainers; her beloved sailing trainers. Her hair, free of its usual restraining bun, was a wavy ordinary brown, falling only to about the middle of her upper arm. Her murky blue-green eyes were hidden behind the sunglasses; this however made the v-shaped scar on her left cheek a little more noticeable. It was an annoyance to the woman; an engineering accident resulting in cogwheels flying springloaded across the room had caused it, and now she saw herself as being even more unattractive then she already thought. It was true that no one really saw her as a beauty model, but the twenty-five year old was not as ugly as she thought, especially when she smiled.
But looks and beauty wouldn't get mechanics working, and though not brilliant the young officer was a studious and hardworking engineer, looking forward to promotion in the not too distant future. Perhaps even when she'd finished her stint on HMS Brave she could have a few words with the appointer and...

The sign she was looking for broke her out of her reverie, and she peered more closely at the three largish sailing dinghies that lay bobbing gently against their fenders, the splash of the greasy harbour waters decorating their otherwise smart hulls. The little red sailed one looked perfect. She prepared her best smile and walked along the dock front to where a grizzled old man sat splicing rope on a capstan. "Good morning to you sir! Do I read by your sign that you are hiring these skiffs for the day?"

The old man looked up. "That I do, miss. D'you know how to handle Mirror Class and up?"
"I have my Day Skipper permit, if that's any help," she offered, sitting down cross-legged on the warm boards that led down to the water and attempting to stay out of the way of the other people hurrying by. The man looked up shrewdly.
"You no be having a Bermudan accent. You from the old country? And from the looks of y' and that permit, I'm guessing you be from the frigate that docked yesterday."
"Right on all accounts. Would you like to check how I handle her before I hire one of your boats? The red-sailed one looks perfect."
"Aye." The man sat in silence for a while as he finished the eyes splice, tucking the ends in neatly and then striking a match to melt the nylon rope ends together. Caitlin sat patiently; it never did to rush one of these old locals. As the man pulled himself laboriously to his feet and led his way down the pontoon she couldn't help grinning to herself as she felt the fresh wind on her face mixed with the dazzle of the sun and the salt sea air. It was a beautiful sailing day and no mistake.
The lieutenant, wearing a borrowed thin lifejacket, took the neat craft around the set points and brought her back alongside to the satisfaction of the owner. As she leant over the gunwale to count the money into his hands, the man did raise his head slightly.
"There might be a bit of a blow tonight. You coming back by lunchtime?"
Caitlin checked her watch. "It's ten am now. I'll take her until two, if that's all right?"
"No problem missie. And don't go getting yourself into trouble. Stay out of the shipping channel, y'hear? If necessary use the sea anchor to wait until it's clear to cross."
"Of course, of course." The woman was eager to get away by now, the sheets pulling strongly in her hands as alongside the jetty was definitely not head to wind. She knew a little about the weather, all sailors did; and she'd sailed rougher seas than today back in England.

The morning was delightful. The woman could almost forget that she had another three months cooped up with the same people to go back to soon. The red-sailed skiff (called Persephone) didn't handle too badly at all for a rental dinghy, and she let herself sail on and on a strong reach, alternating with tacking, until she reckoned she was at least eight miles out from the island. By this time it was almost midday; Caitlin looked ruefully at her watch and decided that after a little break, out here all alone in the vastness of the sea, she should head back. But the wild loneliness, occasional calling of gulls and the sharp briny scent had to be savoured. Taking out her sunglasses she put them on and busied herself with the sea anchor. That should at least keep her stable for a short while; she pulled a compass from her old rucksack and took a few bearings, so she could see if she drifted while she sat. And this being done, she tucked herself under the gunwales of the dinghy, head titled against the mast and legs stretched out down the centreboard. Just to sit for a little while...

The boiling sun that quickly lulled the tired lieutenant to sleep was suddenly overwhelmed by black clouds that boiled in from the west. Bad weather was coming...
