I've been a bass for three years now, but sometimes I feel so far behind everyone else. I can't sight-read, and I sometimes forget my part in the music. But I also don't know my musicals, and everyone else seems to be on top of them.

Today, my director and I were looking through music to practice on in Applied Music class. He found a book that he liked, a giant compelation of Broadway musicals or something. So he sets up at the piano and I sit down near him, and everything is going just fine. He finds something that he likes in the book and points it out to me, "You've heard Edelweiss before, right?"

And I'm like "...What's that?"

Long pause.

"...The Sound of Music?"

Long pause.

"Never saw it."

Longer pause.

And everyone else in the class, who were working on their instruments (I'm the only student there for vocal help) just kind of stop and look at me. It was... very very awkward.

Am I the only person that never watched The Sound of Music? Or Chorus Line? D:

Haven't seen the sound of music either, but I have heard that piece, and yeah I can sight read music....so yeah , I just kinda suggest you work on it. It's a nice thing to be able to do. Very helpful

Hmm, nice to see you around.

Don't worry about knowing all your musicals. Nobody knows ALL of them, anyways, so why should you? Edelweiss is somewhat common, but up until last year (we did SoM for our musical last year) most of my chorus wouldn't have known it either (Including me!)

Sight reading will come with practice, practice, and more practice. Some people get it easily, others it takes much more time, just like anything else in life.
