though we are not as rigid as it seems, politeness is very important. here i will explian how to properly use manners so you NEVER have to hEAR this:

オマエの国に戻ってよ!

Gifts
Girfts are very important in japan. first of all japanese people love to be spolied. if someones coming over make sure you have eye and stomach pleasing pastries set. even if someone comes by surprise its always good to have some sitting in the firdge (best if their the kind that taste good cold) it is sure to make them squeal in glee (we are high in squealing trust me you will see [or maybe just people i know....])

Now for some reall manners:

When giving strech out your arms. make sure it looks sort of like your giving up. who ever is receiving should also extended tehir arms but the receiver should take it down. in more formal situations your head you be slightly down.

this should be followed by a bow saying ありがとう

When going to someone's house a gift should be brought. usually sweets.

gifts should be held with both hands

You have no choice but to give gifts one the follwoing days:

お中元= Gifts at obon

お歳暮= Gifts for new years.

It is also important how it is wrapped, if it is not beautiful, it is rude.

You also have to give gifts when you gO somewhere, souvenirs must be brought back

Bowing and personal space

perosnal space is important, you muist never get to close to a person! at least 3 feet apart!!!!!!

This is where bowing comes in. you bow when:

~greeting someone
~recieving something
~say you bump into someone on the street by accidents, you dont have to bow very low, but you still bow to apologize

~bow low when apologizing, your face sould be down.
~when doing soehting, like presenting hte prime minister, about to do a speech, about to sing the anthem at the soccer cup, about to do a presentation at school, a bow should be done. usually rather low.

if you are of lower position than the person you are bowing to, you must bow deeper and longer (just a bit).

a veyr small bow, like when some one you know gives you a gift, is just a nod of the head.

Silence and similing

Silence. the japanese appreciate it. we love it. in the past nothing was very private, many things were developed and silence is one of them. in fact i can cry without a person talking to me notice (the quiet part is what all japanese can do when crying, but i know how to hld the tears in my eyes, very useful if you ve had my life)

when to be silent:

~when you have just apologized. the person you apologized to will probably be quiet to (like when you ve done something that you would noramlly be scared of the consequences)
~whne you have been told osmething shocking.
~when you are worried
~when you are internally sad.

smiling is also a very important thing. a slight small is a must at all times. not showing your emotions to people you are not close with is respected here, and frankly, it avoids weird scenes (i saw in america= lady screaming and throwing stuff at her husband out side on street, i was mortified, expecting to be involved somehow sweatdrop )

That was very useful, thanks. (Though I've seen them a bit in anime - I can be the 100035th person to say that anime is useful sometimes.)

I wish I could go to Japan - me wants to try all those new lessons out.

^0^ I wish you better luck than I had! I did my very best to keep up with Japanese ettiquette, but I was quickly overwhelmed! Everyone was very nice and helped me out when I was struggling though.

I think the most important thing to know is HOW TO USE THE TOILET!!! crying I'm sure it's not considered respectful if someone (*cough*mahfriendjenn*cough*) turns on the bidet and sprays the whole bathroom. sweatdrop

Those toilets scare me! Man, they're like attack toilets or something. I remember seeing them in a kiddy movie a long time ago...Rugrats in Paris or something (o.O) but for some reason, they were in Japan, and they were fiddling with the toilet and I thought 'Man, why are the sinks like that?'
sweatdrop

I was a little kid...
