"Deus ex machina" is a term used for a literary device in which a character, item, thing, or any other agent (both animate and unanimate) appears unexpectedly to solve an insoluble difficulty. A deus ex machina for the world then, theoretically, would have no bounds on its powers -- and they would only activate when they were needed.
The deus ex machina for the world where I used to live was originally built in the form of an organic android, made in the shape of a young girl (I originally thought this was to pay respects to a 'mother earth' type feature but it turns out my technitions were merely perverted.) The name given to this project was Ashe. It would have been some time before she was fully animated, and further still until she was able to feel emotions and make moral judgements -- and the latter wasn't possible until we'd given her a soul.

Angels are thought to be flawless beings, in part because they know nothing of physical restrictions, existing solely on a spiritual plane. They do not reproduce as we do, but instead by combining essences of themselves with a divine purpose (as vague as this explanation is, it will have to suffice until I think of a way to simplify this.)
Remiel was the 'daughter' of a little-known angel and a fallen angel, known to me as Noane and Vesper. She (as much as angels can have genders) was, simply, the Angel of 'Awakening'.
Each of us has a different idea of what perfection is, and usually it is not the idea of absolute perfection but instead what would most please us personally. Furthermore, it is widely believed that deep inside of us, beyond mortality and sin, is a pure essence that is most widely known as a 'soul'. Remiel was placed in charge of helping people discover and explore this part of themselves, eventually helping them to awaken -- in the afterlife -- to that piece of Eden which they so widely sought.
I'd known her for most of her life, as strange as that sounds -- and suffice it to say that 'most of her life' was not always spent as an angel. Eventually it was decided that she would become entwined with the physical shell of Ashe, 'awakening' the project to it's true power.
