Well, there are many territorial issues here. It is located smack-dab on the line between the waters that separate South Korea's domain and Japan's domain. What I find funny is that on the side of the island, there is a writing that loosely translates (I saw it on the kbs news but forgot what it said) Korea was here.

Here is an small bit of what I wrote in my livejournal a few months back.

Recently, there have been much anger towards Japan from its neighboring countries. Namely China and South Korea. Ties with China and Japan are quickly dwindling as the anti-japanese protests continue. Though China has banned the protests, tension is still high though a little less. As for korea, both south korea and japan are laying claim to a series of islets known as takeshima to japan and tokto to korea. Even worse is that japan has approved of a high school textbook in which it states that korea has been illegally occupying the main island. I am south korean myself. Very proud and soulful of my herritage. All this anger between the asian nations saddens me. Brings many tears to my soul. What happened to the pround and valiant Japan, where any one look at its land will bring joy. What happened to the brave China, where they have been under oppression for decades yet somehow still manages to do well. What happened to the beautiful South Korea, where they have won independence from their North Korean advasary and still are trying to mend ties with them. Asians in my eyes are and will probably be the nicest people you'll ever meet. They'll fight for what they believe in with everything they got. They have a sense of family and respect that has no equal. So this angst between them deeply saddens me. There is a simple solution. Appologize, everyone. History is history. If these negotiations fail, then try again. Keep trying, there is peace to be had. So I have this to say to the nations of China, Japan, South Korea, and everybody else. Just say sorry. please.

-_________-

That just killed the "Support the Koreans" mood in this thread. Thanks alot.

Plus, I don't feel sorry for anthing. Japanese people are tyrants and ever since they became economic superpowers years back, they're becoming cockier and cockier every day.

Not necessarily singling out the people themselves but the government and the whole idea of them as one.

3. Ancient Japanese documents and maps mark Tokto as Korean territory.

"Eunjusicheonghapgi," published by Japanese government in 1667, which they claimed was the first document that recorded Tokto, actually recorded that Ullungdo (Takeshima in Japanese then) and Tokto (Matsushima in Japanese then) belonged to Koryo and that the northwestern border of Japan is at Okishima.

Japanese scholar of practical science Hayashi Shihei published "Map of Three Adjoining Countries" in 1785, which showed each country in distinct colors - Choson in yellow and Japan in green.

In it, Ullungdo and Tokto (Usando), in the middle of the East Sea, were not only colored yellow but marked as Choson territory.

4. Japanese government reconfirms Tokto and Ullungdo as Korean territory at the end of 17th century.

During the Japanese invasion of the Choson Kingdom from 1592 to 1598, the Japanese army invaded Ullungdo and Tokto, killing civilians and stealing their property.

In order to minimize the further loss of human lives, the royal court of Choson enforced its "empty island policy," ordering its people to evacuate the islands for safety.

In the meantime, Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan secretly gave two Japanese fishermen families "permission to cross to Takeshima" to cross to Ullungdo in 1618 and "permission to cross to Matsushima" to Tokto in 1656, which allowed them to go abroad.

So, Japanese fishermen landed in Ullungdo. Soon afterward in 1693, conflicts arose between them and the Korean fishermen, which included Ahn Yongbok. The lord of the Japanese island, Tsushima, took a central role in the conflict and instigated a diplomatic dispute to make Tokto Japanese territory for several years.

The Choson government maintained a consistent and strong stance on its sovereignty over the islands, and Japan finally gave up.

In January 1696, the administrator of Japan's Tokugawa Shogunate reaffirmed that Ullungdo and Tokto belonged to Choson.

Accordingly, Japan forbade Japanese fishermen from fishing around these islands, and nullified "permission to cross to Takeshima" and "permission to cross to Matsushima." Ahn Yong-bok, a Korean fisherman from Tongnae, participated in securing Ullungdo and Tokto from Japan during this time.

This is a fellow reader's comment below.

Japan is just trying to turn up the rhetoric. They want to irritate Korea to the point this issue is brought to internatinal court where Japan hopes to have more political leverage.

This is an actual publish article in the Korean Times by Prof. Shin Yong-Ha

Suck that.
