Indu held her squirming baby still and checked her over. No, she wasn't dirty, didn't have any food on her face, clothes unstained. Good.
"You get to meet a close friend of mine today Sjaji, you'd better be nice to her!"
One of Indu's best friends, Neze, was coming over to meet Sjajan for the first time. Indu was excited.
However, the baby was annoyed. She made a face and said her favorite word.
"NO!"

Neze made her way to the front door of a very good friend of hers, Indu. She was supposed to be meeting her friend's little child, Sjajan today. This was quite exciting seeing as to Neze always really liked children. Well, there was the one little piggish child accross the street from her home, but she knew he would get what he deserved in the end.
She smoothed out her jacket one last time and made sure her hair was in the right place. She was a little vain about how she looked, but it had taken damned near forever to get everything looking just right.
Satisfied with how she looked, she knocked on the door and waited for Indu to answer.

Indu flung open the door, and yanked Neze into a hug, unknowningly messing up the redhead's hair and rumpling her jacket.
"Neze, you ol' whore! It's been a while!"
She shut the door behind the other girl then pointed to the living room.
"The brat's in there. Be careful. She throws stuff. I gotta go to the store, you watch her."
With that, Indu got going while the going was good, as she got into her car she muttered under her breath.
"Suuuuuuucker"
Sjajan was rolling a glass bottle back and forth on the carpet when she heard the door slam. She looked up startled and saw no one.
"Innooo?"
Her ma didn't respond and Sjajan frowned a little.

Sjajan gave her a deadpan look that was almost identical to Indu's own. She paused, mid-roll, and slowly removed her hand from the bottle, eyes narrowing on the woman. Who was this lady that Ma had sent to take charge, this... Aunty? Jani knew that most adults were very stupid, and therefore, she slowly, and clearly spoke.
"No."
Jani's blank look turned to a scowl, and her eyes looked dangerously teary.

Neze was very confused by Sjajan's reaction. Children usually didn't respond this way to her. Then again, she usually wasn't left alone with them. Oh, her mother would get a kick out of this. Neze knew exactly what she would say.
'This is why you should have married that nice Clemmens boy. He was so nice. You'd have children of your own and blah blah blah.'
Jesus, good ol' ma didn't know some of the pervy things he had suggested. It still creeped Neze out.
"Sjajan... Um... You're mother had to run to the store real quick. She'll be back soon, and until then she left me in charge. Don't worry, I'll take care of you. Everything will be fine."
By the end of that she didn't know who she was trying to reassure, herself or Sjajan.

"Psh."
The baby seemed to dismiss Neze and turned back to the bottle, pushing it quietly back and forth. After a moment, Sjajan wiped angrily at her cheek, where a teardrop had trailed. Why had Indu abandoned her?
"Inooo..."
She was being un-Sjajan-like, that was for sure, but Indu had never just left her before. Especially with some creepy lady that thought she was in charge.

Neze coughed in akward manner. Why in hell's name had Indu left her here? The whore. She swore that she wasn't going to forgive her for this one. Neze was so busy brooding she almost didn't notice that Sjajan seemed to be crying.
"Are you okay, Sjajan? Do you need anything?"

Sjajan rarely cried, and the little potato girl certainly wasn't going to run to someone who didn't even care about her when she did cry. Jani thunked the bottle hard on the ground and crawled farther away from Neze.

"Alright, alright. Go ahead and do your own thing. I hope Indu returns soon."
Her tone was a little harsh and she was a little frustrated. Perhaps she should have tried to sound a little nicer.
"Sorry, I'm sorry to sound harsh. I hope I didn't hurt your feelings. I just didn't expect Indu to run off like that. I don't know if this will help at all, but do you want to play a game or something?"
Her voice was much calmer now. She may as well give it one more try before giving up.

Jani was quiet a moment, then looked over at Neze. And adult that played games? Maybe she wasn't so stupid afterall.
"Gehm?"
The blond headed girl scooted closer and sniffled, her tears were gone and she looked curious, maybe even excited.

Sjajan knew what hiding was. She'd hiden in the stove earlier. But she didn't know hide and go seek.
"Ontee each?"
She meant "Auntie Teach" but she couldn't speak very well. Sjajan was getting back to normal. She liked games.

Neze was puzzled at first, but she managed to get what she was saying. Or she was pretty sure.
"Um... You want me to teach you? Okay... Well, in hide in go seek, one person counts to 50 and the other hides somewhere. Then the when the counter gets to 50 they have to find person who has hidden themselves. Once they find them, it's the hiders turn to count. Okay?"
Neze waited for any sign the Sjajan understood.

What the heck was counting? Adults were weird. Still... It might be fun. Sjajan's customary sparkling grin lit her face and she clapped.
