Phinn
Vice Captain

PostPosted: Wed Sep 27, 2006 1:24 pm

It was a simple task for the two applicants. They were to feed and keep the Bull Shark, Phinn, company. With his foul temperment and cold disposition it would be quite a task for these two.

Swimming lazily about his tank, Phinn sniffed the air recognizing the pungant smell that was human flesh. However it was not human flesh he knew. It was neither Aeraen, nor Shouko, nor Drax, nor even Dr. Peterson. They were two completely new people.

This was not what Karin had been expecting. Well, not really. Sure, she'd read the Doctor's request for research aid and it was, to be charitable, brief. She'd found out about the mutations later. That hadn't turned her off, oh no. But hearing about humanoid mutations and seeing them were two different things.

Hair. It was the hair. Limbs, vocal cords, and such, she could cope with. But seeing hair on a fish. Her mind refused to move past that point. And now it was sniffing the air. Could it- he, she reminded herself, his name was Phinn- smell her apprehension? She hoped not. Maybe it was the applicant's scent he was smelling. That was a more cheerful thought. All those etiquette courses her mother had forced her into as a child in an attempt to 'civilize' her had apparently gone to waste. Karin didn't recall a one that covered the proper way to greet a fish-thing in a tank.

Sharks were the reason she was applying for this position. She just wished she'd focused a bit more on cub sharks, mentally trying to recall what she'd forced herself to learn. Fresh and salt, bull, Ganges, shovelnose, females are generally larger. Right. If somehow she survived this, she was memorizing every scrap of info she could get her hands on.

"Hey there, Phinn," she called out in a cheerful voice that was only somewhat forced. "You ready for some chow?" Sluggish sharks, but prone to unpredictability when threatened. Maybe she should've introduced herself, too. The unknown was often times considered a threat.

Phinn turned his head slowly, golden-brown shaggy wet hair sticking to his face in an unkept manner. His face had an expression of annoyance as he barked at whomever called him.

"Who're you?" His voice was sharp and cruel in many ways. Sniffing the air again he eyed in the direction of where his food would be. "Why isn't the DR. here feeding me herself? She shirking her responsibilities again?"

When Sean had first read the advertisement for assistant marine biologists in the Gambino Times Nespaper, he had never expected what he would see today. As he entered the old, rusty doors of the Gambino Restoration Facility, he immediately noticed the plain, boring walls of the center. There was something rather mysterious about this place, and Sean intended to find out its secret.

He walked towards the secretary's desk as he pulled out the newspaper clip. "I'm here for this," He said, placing the paper on the desk, and brushing his hair aside.
"Right this way," she said. She stood up from her seat and walked out from the desk. She was dressed in a long, white, lab coat, with a button saying"Hello, my name is Riley".He asked her what exactly the job was about in a curious voice. She simply shrugged and said,"I don't interfere with the Professor's work," and opened a door for Sean. He went in and saw the pools of water, as expected. He saw another person there, seemingly an apprentace as well.

He leaned over the edge of the pool to look and was stricken with surprise. It seemed as though this bull shark, Phinn as it said on the label attached to the pool, had grown limbs, and hair. He had become mutated.

"Hello little fella'," He said as he went to hand-feed Phinn, a desicion he wasn't sure was a good one.

"Probably!" She chirped back at Phinn. Figures that Aqualad had an attitude. It seemed that being a big fish in a little pond was not all it was cracked up to be. Karin's smile was definately forced now. "What's the point of being on the top if you don't abuse your power every now and again?"

She nodded to the newcommer as he entered. From his actions, it seemed he was here for the position as well. Arg, competition. It had been mentioned, but Karin'd hoped he wouldn't show. No such luck it seemed. "I'm Karin, by the way," she said, addressing both fish and human. Turning back to Phinn, she added, "I'd say it's a pleasure, but we both know that'd be a lie."

An expression of disbelief set itself on her features as she watched the guy get ready to feed Phinn... by hand. "Aaaah... don't think that's a good idea," she muttered at Sean. "I'm sure he'd prefer live food," she cast a glance at the shark-lad, as if to check if this were true, "and bull sharks are known to attack humans."

Phinn's gaze instantly turned to the second who had arrived, Sean. With a growl he sent a wave of ice cold salt water into his face. It wasn't the friendliest of greetings, however, he wasn't the friendliest of people. But being called 'lil fella', he could take afew showers of salty ice cold water for that remark.

Sean turned to this lab partner.
"Only when they feel threatend," He said, being the busybody he was.
"Though I agree with you about the live food," he replied, wiping the icy water off of his face. He made eye contact with the fish, as to glare at him.

He went over to browse the other pools, and to check what they hand in stock for the shark's food. He had read that rays were a special treat for these sharks in college, and was hoping to find some to apologise for what he said to Phinn. He didn't think he was that tempermental, but realized how annoying it is to be called "little fella'". As he searched the tubes for live prey, he did find some Manta Rays, but decided he better not. Sean had just heard about the Manta Ray Hunter's horrible death. So he went along to try to find some food. He saw some echnioderms, but decided that also would be a bad idea to touch. He found some turtles and decided that was what he should feed him. They did have alot of nutrients after all.

Though turtles were one of his favourite animals, Sean decided he must do whatever it takes to get this job. He walked over to the steel tank, and asked Phinn if he wanted it.
"Is it okay with you if I give him this?" He asked Karin, as the turtle squirmed in his hands.
"My name is Sean by the way," He said with a smile as he tilted his head.

And who was to say what exactly threatened a fish-human hybrid thing in a tank? Karin always played it cautious. Getting hurt in any way was not on her to do list.

"Eh, as long as they're in the food tank and not the specimen tanks, I guess." Personally, she'd've asked Phinn if he had a preference. Maybe getting his favorite food would mellow him out a bit? Make the time pass easier for all of them. She had no intention of leaving before her time was up, but she'd rather pass that time in a pleasant manner.

Maybe she'd ask him anyways. "That okay with you, Phinn? Unless there's something else you'd prefer?" She hoped he wouldn't respond with human as a choice. There was something unsettling about trying to keep a creature that actively wanted to eat you company.

Phinn eyed the turtle curiously and swam closer to the edge of the tank as the two spoke. "It's fine, it's fine. Give it here!" He growled reaching up from his tank to show his gilled side and finned back. "You're supposed ot be feeding me right? So gimme the damn food already!"

Sean dropped the turtle in Phinn's tank as he watched him devour it. He actually found it very interesting how he got the turtle out of it's shell.

He walked around the lab some more, waiting for the time to pass. He observed the other creatures, most who seemed to have at least some sort of human feature. It was really amazing what had happened to these creatures, yet at the same time, sorrowful. He wondered if the creatures had prefered to be fish, or this form of a mutant.

"So Karin," he said as he continued to walk around the room, "what kind of fish would you dream of having?"
"I personally love the pufferfish," He said in a giddy voice.
"The way they look when they become inflated, how they fend off their predators, it's all so amazing."

The temptation to make Phinn beg for it was almost too much. Almost. It also helped that she wasn't the one holding the turtle. And taunting the subjects probably wouldn't be the best idea. She watched as the turtle went into the tank.

"Turtle goes in the water. Shark's in the water. Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies," she muttered. Straightening, she looked at Phinn. "We're also supposed to keep you company."

Turning to Sean, Karin shrugged. "Actually, I'm here for the sharks." Her attention wandered back to Phinn, watching him swim and eat. "It's kind of a long story."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 28, 2006 1:31 pm

Phinn grabbed the turtle quick, and forced it into the side of the tank, being able to hold it helped greatly with the ability to devour it as he was now banging it relentlessly on the side of the tank to break it's shell open.

He listened to their conversation as he managed ot break open the shell enough to dig at it and kill the turtle. "Pufferfish are pansies." He grumbled. "What makes all of you think you can handle sharks?"

"Don't know if you don't try," Karin said, softly, giving the shark-man a hard look. He didn't think she could play with the predators? Fine. Louder, she continued. "I have no idea if I can 'handle' sharks. That's the point of this whole exercise.

"Dunno 'bout Sean here, but sharks intrigue me. I like to surf, did it with my SO all the time. I guess I was lucky; he was the one that got bit. White shark, tore his calf muscle right off. And then left me to haul him to shore." She paused for a moment, lost in the memory. Shaking her head, she continued. "I never really thought about 'em before that. Sharks have existed practically unchanged for millions of years. The only things a shark has to fear are other sharks- and humans. They don't get cancer. Research has suggested that sharks may not die of old age." As if struck by inspiration, she fumbled with the collar of her shirt and pulled out and necklace with a single white shark's tooth dangling on the end. She displayed the charm proudly.

"This was taken out of one his wounds. Was it hungry, when it bit him? Did it not like the taste? Was it just curious? Case of mistaken identity? How can I not be fascinated by something so different from me?" She pursed her lips as she finished, looking a bit disgruntled. She hated to go off on a tangent, and Phinn had provoked her into doing just that.

Sean quickly turned to the tank.
"Pufferfish are most certainly not pansies!" He said, his eye's meeting the bukll shark's "They release toxins when threatend, and some can shoot out their needles! You should fear them!" He said sarcastically.
"As for the sharks, I've worked with them at the Gambino aquarium, though none were as tempermental as you, my friend" He responded.

"The aquarium...I wish they hadn't shut it down. I enjoyed watching the dolphins teasing the pufferfish, though we had to stop them, there was some speculation of dolphins getting high off the smalll amounts of the pufferfish's toxin"He said as he laughed slightly,"I began to think the pufferfish actually enjoyed being played with. They always looked so joyful."

He walked around the tank, examining Phinn and his mutations.
"So Phinn, may I ask you a few questions,"He exclaimed in a shy, quiet voice.

"Why ask me questions? I'm the mindless killing machine, as I am sure she-" He murmured, pointing to Karin with smooth gray-brown fingers, " More than likely thinks."

After finishing off the rest of the turtle meat he tossed the shell up at them to dispose of it and dunked under the water for a moment to rehydrate his skin. "If you feel the need to pick and pry at me like the Dr does, than go right ahead. I obviously have no ******** rights..." He grumbled, swishing a fin and splashing water at them in what seemed like a pissy manner.
