ooh, that's a toughy, along with flutter tongue! gonk And "cheating" doesn't work either. I think some people are better at it than others.... Well, anywho, I can't even roll my R's, so when I sing in choir, I often "cheat"....I use the back of my mouth sort of like starting to spit, or what people call "haucking" or however you spell it....yeah, I'm gonna keep practicing. Hopefully I'll be able to do it one day... And I'm not sure, but I think the reed and mouthpiece might make a difference, too.

My sis was trying it when she was still in Jazz Band (stupid schedual conflicts) anyway I think you can also do it by humming or "grrring" into the mouthpiece of the sax
I think that is how she tried it
Good for you, thank you for learning to growl
I hate it on gruff bluesy songs or edgy song when all the other instruments are down and dirty, but the lead sax solos gonk scream with a glassy smooth Kenny G sound, it just ruins it

Oh, like the way ian anderson hums/growls while playing flute? That's what I was thinking. I taught myself to do that, on flute, but I can't quite do it on sax.

Oh, and fluttering is np for me ^^ double tonguing, I can kinda do, but I get the feeling that I'm cheating.

Well flutter tongue is kinda like gargling through your horn or rather humming just like the rolling of the R's/

The tecnique that i use for growling is the very fat raspy one. I usually use my throat and hum a note. Dont hum the same note your playing cuz that kinda messes you up.

"The saxophone growl is made by singing or humming a note at the same time as playing. This note is not necessarily the same note as you are fingering/playing. The ideal note to sing can vary, it could be a harmony note or the same note slightly out of tune.

I find the best way to practice this is to play a note, then hum any old note in the back of your throat. Alter the pitch of this hummed not until the interference with the saxophone note creates a good growl

Then go slowly up and down the chromatic scale doing the same on each note. You will gradually get a feel for which note to sing or hum, and after a while you should be able to do this without thinking about it"

Yeah, I never thought of calling fluttering "gargling" that's a very good description. Thank you.

And thank you for the growling advice. : ) That's basically what I thought it was. I think though, that I was told the ideal growl is humming a fifth. I'm gonna start playing around with these as soon as finals are over and I'm free again ^^

Thank you so much, again.

*sighs*

This is one of those times I wish I played sax. All that stuff sounds like fun to do...

Don't worry about the interval you hum the note at... doesn't make that much of a difference. It prolly sounds a little more "bluesy" if you DON'T hum in a 5th!

BTW, be conservative with growling. Usually a little bit can go a long way!!

I think I'll experiment a lot in marching band, just because that's a great place to try that kind of stuff

Hahaha that's where i did alot of my experimenting with my emboucher and such. Because they make you play so much your chops get stronger we also have a few soloists and do a little improvising.
