[Naruto x Sasuke]

Notes: This takes place around volumes 3 and 4 in the manga version of Naruto. Sasuke's still wounded and healing, although unconscious, and Naruto stays with him instead of going with the rest of the group to a celebration.

Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto.

The sun was setting over the water. Naruto stretched and yawned as he slid off his jacket, walking away from the window. He sat back down beside Sasuke's bed and found himself staring again at the sleeping boy who was covered in bandages. It was the second day after their fight against Zabuza and Haku. Sasuke was awake long enough to let Naruto carry him back to Tazuna's.

He'll never forget what it was like, to look up and see Sasuke stumbling backwards towards him with all of those needles embedded into his skin. The words and images were still very much alive in his mind.

'I swore I wouldn't die... but don't you die!' Sasuke told him, lying in Naruto's arms as blood slowly flowed along Naruto's fingers and down his arm, and then Sasuke his eyes...

Naruto shook his head then held it in his hands. The memories and feelings from that day flooded back to him like a nightmare: The feeling of Sasuke's warm body, held in his arms for the first, and presumably last time. The memories of when they met and accidentally kissed, of their training in the trees, of all the times they talked, no matter how trivial the conversation. When he remembered the blood slowly pouring along his hands again, he clinched his hands and felt the tears slip from his eyes and down his face.

He felt someone brush them away, he started to lean into the hand, then jumped when his ninja instincts came back to him. It was Sasuke. He was sitting up watching him with a concerned look.

"What's wrong, Naruto?" He asked, obviously worried. Naruto just shook his head.

'...who in order to protect someone he cared about, threw himself headlong into what he knew full well was a trap.' Haku's words played again in his mind. Did Sasuke really care about him?

Naruto sighed... He really wished Sasuke didn't see him like this. Sasuke frowned, and brought his hand back from Naruto's face.

"Thanks for helping me get back here... although it would have been nice if you all had taken some of the needles out before you picked me up.." He tried to brighten the conversation by adding some sarcasm to the last sentence. It worked sort of, Naruto smiled.

"Where's everyone at?" Sasuke asked when he realized they were alone in the house.

"They're at the official opening the bridge. I was supposed to go, but I wanted to stay here with you." Naruto looked away slightly. Sasuke blinked. It used to be that Naruto could care less if he had fallen off the face of the earth... could this have changed him that much?

Naruto was frowning still, and seemed to try to not look at him. Sasuke had a feeling he would regret it, but... he reached out with an arm despite the pain of the wounds and bruises, and wrapped it around his shoulders, pulling him closer. Naruto wrapped both of his arms around his chest and buried his head into his neck, letting the tears fall.

"I was afraid of losing you... of not being able to ever talk to you again... of not being able to try to be a real friend to you instead of being a jerk..." Naruto said through choked breaths. "Ever since I was little, people have hated me for what's inside of me... and besides Iruka, you're the only one who really cared about me. Anyone else probably would have let Haku kill me."

Sasuke wrapped his other arm around the blond, and closed his eyes while rubbing Naruto's hair with one of his hands. "Don't worry... You're not gonna get rid of me that easily, Uzumaki." Sasuke smiled at him. They held each other for a moment, then Sasuke had to break away to lay back down because he couldn't bear the pain in his back anymore.

Naruto followed and laid there with him. Sasuke was laying on his back, and Naruto laid on his side next to him, resting his head on his chest, wrapping an arm around him. Sasuke wrapped an arm over him and rested it on his back, resuming the head rubbing.

Naruto nuzzled against the raven haired boy's neck. Sasuke rubbed his face against Naruto's hair a little, eyes closed, loving every moment of this. The sun had gone down now, and they were laying together in the dark. After a moment, Naruto spoke up.

"What if Kakashi and the others see us?" He asked, very reluctant to break from Sasuke's warm body.

"They're just going to have to get used to it." Sasuke smiled at him in the dark, and he saw Naruto just smile as he nuzzled back into his neck. Sasuke held the smaller boy in his arms as he fell asleep. He could have sworn he heard "Love you, Sasuke..." right before he fell asleep himself.

Ending Notes: So, I have a plot ready to continue this into an adventure type story, still centered around Sasuke and Naruto's rapidly developing relationship. To continue, or not? That is the question...
