The mid afternoon sun rose high overhead, glinting off the ornate pendant that rested around the neck of a rather youthful male. Despite being a rather fashionable accessory, the jewellery served another more imperative purpose – namely preventing the man from burning to a pile of cinders under the harsh radiance of the sun. But for the infant resting in the vampires arms, it was a shiny trinket with which to play.
“Careful with that mon petit” Orpheus said fondly, a delightful French lilt in his voice, “I have no desire to meet my end beneath this vile orb”
The boy, Cornelius, grinned broadly up at his new father before placing the pendant in his mouth once more. He was a rather curious child, in appearance and even more so because of the way in which he had come into the care of Orpheus. Cornelius had simply appeared on the vampire’s doorstep one evening, no note, and no indication of why he had been left there – whoever had left the boy assuming that Orpheus would see fit to care for him. Thankfully, the vampire had done just that.
Shaking his head and sending his shoulder length tresses loose from their bindings, Orpheus’s purposeful steps continue to lead him and his son toward the play equipment that rested ahead of them. He had been hoping to run into other children like Cornelius, despite his knowledge that the Sin'aeis mansion might be a more appropriate location to fulfil this desire. In spite of that information, Orpheus had decided the park would be a suitable location for Cornelius to begin the development of some social skills before introducing him to the mansion and the bulk of the other children.
Making a b-line for an empty bench at the playground edge, Orpheus folded himself gracefully onto the smoothed wood while allowing his dark russet eyes to regard the equipment and the enchanted children upon it. “What should we do first peu d'ananas?” Orpheus cooed, brushing a pallid finger over the spiked scales on Cornelius’s cheeks.

Mikini heald her new "son" calvi in her arms. He was happily chewing on a lovely set of colored rings that his uncle, josh, had gotten him. Mikini noticed a femiliar face and ran over to greet them. Calvi, who only knew one word, stretched his hand out tward the other child. "Love!" he shouted.
"Hello there!" mikini said, greeting the two of them. Calvi wasn't smart enough to realize where he was, and was growing uncomfterble at the sight of the brightly colored equiptment.

Orpheus smiled radiantly as the young woman approached, rising to greet her. “Mademoiselle Mikini, a pleasure to see you again my dear” the vampire said politely, taking Mikini’s hand within his own and placing a gentle kiss upon the back of her hand. “And Master Calaveras too, well this it to be a delightful day”
Forgetting about his shiny chew toy, Cornelius blinked several times at the strange infant that had appeared. A frown crossed the pineapple Sin’aeis lips as he found himself unable to comprehend what the boisterous child was saying, instead cringing at the volume at which the indecipherable word was spoken.
“How fare you and the little enfant de sucrerie?” Orpheus inquired, motioning for Mikini to seat herself. Bouncing Cornelius lightly in his arms, the vampire seated himself beside the girl.

mikini smiled sweetly and sat beside him. She placed calvi next to Cornelious. Calvi, who hadn't yet figured out how to sit up, stretched his arms out to mikini, wining and grunting. "It's ok baby" she tolled him. She smiled at the vampire "we're doing quite well thank you. How are you and cornelious? He's growing into quite a handsome little thing" she said with a smile.

Propping Cornelius against his crossed legs, a pale arm resting securely around the child’s waist, Orpheus set his son beside Calaveras. “Do not fear mon petit ananas, this other child poses you no danger and only seeks to befriend you” the vampire spoke soothingly, calming down a panicked looking Cornelius.
Fisting his little hand and placing it in his mouth, a action that provided some comfort to the boy, Cornelius made several noises that rested halfway between babbling and squeaking – his own way of greeting Calaveras and extending an olive branch after an initial shaky start.
“Just like his father” Orpheus replied good humouredly, flashing pearly fangs as he smiled. “But yes, you’ll find us both in sound and favourable health, with no more then the usual calamitous circumstances to cast a shadow on our lives” the man continued, his smiling fading to a more maintainable level. “I see that you are once more without your frères” Orpheus spoke a moment later, realising his slip quickly. “Forgive me Mikini, I often forget that not every is fluent in my second tongue, I was enquiring about your brothers, wondering why they did not accompany you on such a resplendent day”

"oh" mikini said, nodding "well, rick is in school, and josh has coxacky(sp?). Rick will probobly be coming here after school. Looks like the boys are getting along". She said, smiling and pointing to the babies.
Calvi looked At cornelious, grinning and making a series of odd noises and gestures. He was trying to tell his new friend about how josh let him watch a scarry movie, and mikini hit josh over the head with a pillow. For one so small, he was unusually aleart. He snagged a handfull of grass and stuffed it in his mouth. Mikini was quick to react.
"no no little zombie, we don't eat that" she corrected him, removing the grass from his mouth. Little zombie was a nickname handed down by josh due to his strange apearance.

“And yourself? Why are you not attending school on this day? Could you no find alternative care for Master Calaveras?” Orpheus asked, his brow furrowing momentarily before returning once more to its usual faultless exquisiteness. He suspected that Mikini had forgone her education in favour of caring for her new son, but the vampire wasn’t one to base his beliefs and opinions on uninformed notions.
Watching the other child with a furrowed brow, Cornelius struggled to make sense of the strange gestures and peculiar noises but soon grew anxious and distracted when he couldn’t attain success. Golden orbs turned there attention to the playground equipment, little hand extending toward it and flexing. “Jeu. Jeu” the boy exclaimed, hand continuing to grab for the playground.
Orpheus smiled at his son, easily interpreting one of the few words that Cornelius had managed to master. “Play? That should not be problem mon petit, but would Calaveras care to play also?” the vampire continued, his questions directed to Mikini and her son.

"well" mikini said in regards to the previous question "after my mom and dad died, Josh needed to work, rick needed to stay in school, and i needed to watch things around the house. Rick usualy tutors me when he gets home, but i'm doing better than he is. Sometimes he brings workbooks home for me. After we found calvi, I've been watching him too." She then turned to calvi. "do you want to play with the little boy?" she asked him. Calvi squeeled with delight and clapped his hands. "I guss that means yes" she said, sounding a bit unsure of what he meant, but was basicly good at guessing. She picked him up and plopped him on the seet of a seasaw. "would you like to play on the seasaw?" she asked cornelious, bending down to his leval.

“It is virtuous to see that you continue to pursue your schooling despite the harrowing circumstances in which you find yourself” Orpheus replied, a sad smile making a brief appearance over his features. “May I be so bold as to enquire into how your parents departed this world? If the wounds of their passing are still to raw, I would completely understand your refusal to fulfil my request” the vampire continued, dark orbs watching Mikini with a radiant gentleness.
Cornelius blinked in reply to Mikini’s question, seeming unsure how to react to have a stranger in such close vicinity. “Jeu…. ?” the boy repeated uncertainly, glancing to his father with a puzzled expression.
“Mon enfant timide” Orpheus sighed patiently, standing with unsurpassed grace and moving to the vacant end of the see-saw. Setting Cornelius upon the wooden equipment, the father placed his and his son’s hands on the see-saws handle and waited for Mikini. “Do not fear ananas” Orpheus said soothingly as Cornelius began to fidget, “it is the same as the see-saw within our dwelling, only bigger”

Mikini drew a long, sad breath. "you know how my brother, josh, is deff, right? Well, my mom died in a car accadent when i was only a few months old. Our step-father, Charels, became our gardian. Josh was only four, but he couldn't talk. Charels was embarrased by him, and his inability to speek, so he..." mikini wiped a tear from her eyes "He beat him almost to death, starved him like a dog, treated him like dirt. One day, he beat him so bad that he passed out on the kitchen floor. He...he..." mikini heald back tears, recalling the memory "He took a knife, and cut his ear really deep, threw him down the stairs into the basement, and tolled rick and i that he was going to kill him that night. The boys were only twelve, but rick didn't want josh to be hurt anymore, so that night wail charels was sleeping" she lowered her voice to ensure that nobody else would hear "He took a gun, and shot charels in the head to save josh's life, and then we ran far away".
Even calavares looked saddened, but mikini brushed back his hair, and kissed him on the head. She started up the seasaw, and calvi began to squeel with glee, forgetting the story that he had just heared. Mikini's face lightened to see the grin creep across his little face.
"Love!" calvi squeeled, outstretching his arms to his 'mommy'.

Orpheus inclined his briefly in response to Mikini’s questions, recalling she had mentioned her brother’s impairments on their previous meeting. The thought that someone so young was forever destined to miss the cacophony of sounds that composed life’s melody saddened the vampire, and Mikini’s revelation that her sibling had endured far more because of his condition set Orpheus’s blood on fire. “The abominable monster deserved his fate many times over Mademoiselle Mikini” Orpheus replied, the anger beneath his tone unmistakable despite the softness of his voice. If it hadn’t been for Cornelius, and the still fragile and budding relationship developing between father and son, the vampire would have expressed his disgust rage in a more openly hostile way.
The pineapple Sin’aeis kicked his little legs wildly in the air, seeming carefree and delighted – having moved passed his initial apprehension and clearly oblivious to the dark topic of conversation being discussed. Pushing the see-saw down, the motion moving the equipment up once more, Orpheus continued to hold Cornelius so as to offer the child the comfort and warmth that the boy craved.

Mikini smiled politely and nodded. Hoping to move on, she patted calvi on the head. Calvi squeeled, his oddly pale complexon re-gaining color. "J'aime ma mère" he mumbled to his friend. Mikini sat in confuson. She wasn't sure what was on those watch and learn tapes that josh had been filling his little head with, but she didn't understand a word of it. He rattled his head around and shrieked, immatating something from one of the family's favorite movies.
"He just saw gremlins last week" mikini explained "He's imitating spike, you know, when he melted." She chuckled slightly.

The vampire silently concurred with Mikini’s sentiments of moving the conversation onwards, an amused smile spreading across Orpheus’s lips as Calaveras uttered a phrase in French. Judging from the reaction of the young mother, it was hardly something she had been expecting or something that she was able to translate. “I love my mother” the man translated smoothly, his smile remaining, “in case he should ever repeat it those words again, you’ll now know what he is speaking”
As the sugar candy child broke into shrieks and jerky movements, another cry soon joined in – this howl lacking the purpose and confidence of Calaveras, bordering close on terrified instead. With his legs still kicking frantically, Orpheus lifted and squalling child into his arms and coddled him. “Silence mon petit, Master Calaveras will not harm you – he is simply showing you something” Orpheus whispered soothingly to the snuffling infant.
“I’m afraid I don’t know Mademoiselle Mikini” the vampire replied, patting Cornelius comfortingly upon the back. “I have never been one for such movies, although I am sure that Calaveras impression is doing the film justice”. Orpheus smiled back at the teenager and her son, hoping Cornelius’s outburst wouldn’t dishearten them.

Mikini smiled and put her hand on her son's sholder.
"There there calvi, i don't think your new friend likes it when you get so wild."
Instantly, the baby stopped and slumped over dumbly, feeling somewhat embarrased. He hadn't meant to startle anybody.
"booboo" he apoligised, although he was somewhat lacking in any form of sophistocated lingual scills, he was usually able to express himself.
"personally" mikini sighed "i sort of regret letting him watch those movies. Too much cartoon violance at such a young age can be desencetizing."

Continuing his attempts to soothe his son, Orpheus’s smile faded as he nodded in vehement agreement to Mikini’s statement. “It is most unfortunate, and deeply troubling, that I must concur with your statement in light of having witnessed such a desensitising during my years, rather recently to be precise” the vampire replied, his accented voice taking on a note of regret, a testament to the responsibility he felt at the incident alluded toward. “Someone, to whom a share a unique bond, recently found herself required to care for several infants” Orpheus began, countenance falling along with the volume of his speech, “ones that she had never desired, never wanted, but became responsible for all the same. As it is with all children, the triplets were impressionable and easily moulded and I greatly regret that they have become violent, monstrous toddlers partly because of the programs they were exposed to on a near daily basis.”
Dark locks shifted slowly as Orpheus shook his head, a sigh passing from his lips. “Perhaps I should have intervened, incurred her wraith for the shake of the children, but the time for such things has long passed”. Lifting his chestnut eyes to Mikini, the vampire uttered a simple warning - “Do not allow Master Calaveras to shaped in this way, set and example that will see him grow into a fine, and balanced, young man”
Within his father’s pale appendages Cornelius appeared to have settled, with the occasional sniffle and hiccup still to be heard. Shifting the boy so that he rested in the crook of his arm, able to face Mikini and Calaveras, Orpheus lightly swayed the child and offered him the pendant to which Cornelius was so attached. When his son had calmed further the father would place him back on the sea-saw.
