While Heinlein is a good author, I'm more a fan of Orson Scott Card, Dan Abnett and Elizabeth Moon.

they were all one step below making my list of options. I like Dan's books alot because he doesnt give extremely vague discriptions of the male characters and then go into hyper focus on the female characters. its annoying when the manner of discription is radically differant depending on the gender of the person who is being discribed.

I'm slightly taken aback that you didn't even mention Frank Herbert.Perhaps Dune isn't a very popular book around these parts.

It's popular but not on the same level as the the true Masters. He is a master, but doesnt make the story more real than reality.
