Hi, feel free to either ask for or give advice on this page!
I would like some advice. I want to learn to do the side-splits...or close atleast, but i can't afford to get a complicated stratching machine. Does anyone know how I can go about this....other than pushing my legs apart?
I want to do it like when you are sitting on the ground with your legs wide apart instead of standing and sinking down into splits with my feet facing sidewards....if anyone has seen the film Magic Kid....like Kevin does on a bench.

ok if this sounds like im being a jerk i appologize but really the best way to do a split is to actually do them. i know its painfull but over time you will be able to do a full split. it took me nearly a year to stretch out my muscles to be able to do one. another stretch that can help is while sitting down. spread your legs as wide as you can in front of you. grab your ankles and pull yourself forward and try to put your chest on the floor keeping your legs in front of you. this one is best done with a partner pushing lightly on your back. but the best thing to do is actually to strengthen the muscles in your leg. the stronger the muscles the more tension they can handle without tearing. so basically the stronger the mucles the easier to stretch. i know it sounds really odd but it works.so in addition to regular stretches you sone leg conditioning excersices like lunges, a couple of military excersices like the knee bender, the chinese kick ect. ill explain those for you. the knee bender is easy, you stand with your feet at shoulder width and bend at your knees and touch your ankles then stand back up. *keep your back strait* the chinese kick is a little bit harder. you lay face down however you hold yourself up on your forearms, and you lift one leg at a time as high as you can, bring it down without touching the ground and repeat the process. do that 10 times with each leg. oh yeah. there is one more. the "dog and the fire hydrant" you are on your hands and knees and you lift one leg strait up (like a dog peeing) and bring it back down without touching the ground. do that 25 times with eacxh leg. i hope this helps.

lol u dont have to get a machine....its just a waste of money
simply practice stretching frequently during the week....this will make you more limber and flexible. It takes time and practice in order to do the splits. Since i do Wushu, the split and being overall flexible is very important in order to move your body and kick correctly. It took me about a year or two to split ......so keep practicing, thats the only way you will be able to get it biggrin

Yup..what ghostpalm said. It took me quite a while to get a split..almost 4 years. The thing was Choy Li Fut doesn't have many sets which you have to split, so I was never really interested in it till I moved on to wushu. Even thought that's the case, I was able to do splits on my fourth year of Choy Li Fut...so just keep stretching!

it took me about 6 months because at our academy we do a thing called wall stretches, and those you lean up against a wall, and have a partner push your leg up to make your knee touch your nose, while having one foot on your other knee so you don't bend it. tap out when it hurts too back though. Also, another good one is if you sit on the floor with your legs out as wide as they can go, have a partner put their feet just below your knee andtake hold of your hands. Make sure their knees are bent and have them pull you backtowards them. When they do this it pushes your legs backwards. Tap when it hurts bad.

I'm working on a new kick for me, it's Shaolin monkey style, and I'm having a hard time keeping my balace with it, any tips of how to shift my weight with it so I don't fall.
It's not really a kick in itself, it's a combination. It's a full speed roundhouse, and then a quick side snap. You set it down like for a spinning back, but keep your other foot low, and hook your ankle around theirs and pull your foot back to make them fall. The thing is, it has to be at an extremely high speed, and I can't get it that fast unless I learn to keep my balace so I don't fall when I get there.... sweatdrop
any tips?

Another useful strecth to develop the splits is to plca you butt agnist a wal and spread your legs down, with your back on the floor have an instrutor or partner places his or her leg or hands on each side.

I have one, I wouldn't worry about getting your balance better, that will come as you practice it. You shold try the moves slowly and try to speed it up the next day, then a bit faster the next. It is a lot easier to do in stages, like my splits you have to be very patient and it will come. Try it slowly and then your balance will improve and then try it faster and it will improve with you. It may take more than a day for each speed though....try it! Good Luck. ninja

I have some advice to give if your new to a MA style that uses horse stance alot like TKD, get into horse stance and stay like that for 10 (more if you want) minutes and just breath in and out, then after 10 minutes go through your different defenses atleast 3 times everyday and your legs will get stronger and you'll get more comfortable with horse stance.

In tech school I was learning to be a machinest all we did was stand. I am working for our local paper in the mail room puting the adds and stuff in the papers befor they are sent out and we stand for three and some days ten hours. I also got a job doing security at this place made for kids it's got a skating rink and I am on my feet for at least three hours there on Saturday nights.
I think this will help my leg strength a ton in Wing Chun the first form Siu Lim Tau has no real leg movment so we get into a horse stance and go through the form slow this is the normal Wing Chun way of practice the Siu Lim Tau is also good for Chi.

Try doing something like this: Begin with your feet seperated almost to a horse stance, but not quite as wide. Then try keeping your feet in place, but have someone toss tennis balls around you, so you have to shift your weight, but not move, to catch them. Or, if you are by yourself, you can just do something like shadow-fighting, except applid to this exercise. It's helped me with my balance, but now I just need to become more flexible. ^^;;;
