Welcome to the Samus Aran/Metroid Thread!

Wikipedia
Samus was one of the first active heroines in a video game, appearing at a time when other popular heroes, such as Mario and Link, were predominantly male and striving to rescue helpless princesses. Some games, such as Super Mario Bros. 2, added female playable characters, but these continued to exhibit exaggerated feminine characteristics. One female lead character contemporary to Samus, albeit less widely known, was Alis Landale of the first Phantasy Star role-playing game. For a time, there were few other active heroines, although the 1990s introduced the first fighting-game female, Chun-Li. Then, in the late '90s, Lara Croft of Tomb Raider and Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 made a huge impression on the video game industry. Many feminists, however, found Croft’s extreme sexualization and unrealistic attire in a harsh environment appalling. While there are many female heroines today, a large majority of them have emulated Lara Croft’s exaggerated sexuality to appeal to a predominantly male gaming community.

Samus' defiance of this stereotype is part of what makes her such a highly regarded character. Although Samus is definitely depicted as an attractive female, and several of the Metroid games portray her in somewhat revealing attire if one completes the game under certain time restrictions, her "normal" appearance, that most gamers associate with her is her armored power suit
(though in recent years her power suit and her posturing therein have been accused of being redesigned as more femininely appealing to male gamers)[citation needed], with the depictions of her without it seen as a form of fanservice.

The following Metroid games have featured Samus Aran as the main character (Not including re-releases or demos, and also presented in apparent chronological order where applicable):

1. Metroid (1986, NES, FDS)
2. Metroid: Zero Mission (2004, Game Boy Advance) (Expanded remake of Metroid, counted canon while retconning the original version)
3. Metroid Prime (2002, GameCube)
4. Metroid Prime Pinball (2005, Nintendo DS) (Metroid Prime in pinball form)
5. Metroid Prime: Hunters (2006, Nintendo DS) (Interquel of Prime 1 and 2.)
6. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (2004, GameCube)
7. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (2006, Wii)
8. Metroid II: Return of Samus ( 1991, Game Boy)
9. Super Metroid (1994, SNES)
10. Metroid Fusion (2002, Game Boy Advance) (released simultaneously with Prime)

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the third and final installment in the Metroid Prime series, will be released as a launch title for the Wii.

THERE'S ONLY ONE MORE METROID PRIME GAME COMING OUT!?
NOOO!
*cries*

Wow, I love those games so much. I've wasted many hours blasting metroids, space pirates, and the ing in first person. They were so perfect.
So many nice features in them to make it all the more immersive.
I swear, I've fallen in love with Samus because of those games. I mean, I always admired her because she didn't even look like a girl in her power suit. I first saw her in the original super smash bros, and I thought she was a guy. Then, I read her profile thing and I was like, "She's a girl? o __o"

Anyway....

Favorite suit = PHAZON SUIT! Wow, it was so slick and stylish, and not to mention hot. And it was the most functional. It offered the most protection, and you could hop through blue phazon in it. I was so mad when Metroid Prime eats it at the end of the game.
Not to mention Dark Samus is a total poser. D:<

Favorite weapon = ICE BEAM! Everyone who ever plays Metroid Prime is like "LOL PLASMA BEAM IS DA BEST" and I can't figure out why.
Sure, it's fun to use, and it's good, but I just liked the Ice Beam more. Freezing enemies solid and then shattering them with a missle is so amazing.

Yeah, my favorite game is Metroid Prime. Echoes is good as well, but it's not the same.
However, I find the Luminoth and the Chozo to be some of my favorite game races ever. They're simply amazing.

I love Samus! She rocks! I love all of the games! I was there when the first one ever came out! I was about 5 year-old and loved it since! Samus is one of the best female characters, ever! xd

Ok, for those Gamer Chicks out there who've played Metroid Prime, how in the nine hells do you beat the big boss of the snow dome? (Obviously, I cant' remember his name lol ). It's just after you get the thermal helmet, and I do pretty well with that and the super missles up until he busts the roof open and then the thermal helmet is useless. Then you cant' see ANYTHING at all and he gets to take pot shots at you while you run around blind. Is there something I'm not doing? Help! crying

Thanks! whee

So, I picked up a copy of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes last night while the hubby and I were out at Blockbuster. The game is brand new, still in the foil and I got it for $14.99. That rocks my socks. I now own EVERY Metroid game out there, except for the multiplayer one. That one kinda breaks the spirit of Metroid, I think.

Are you talking about Thardus, the rock monster?

Well, you have the thermal visor on, and you keep hitting his weak rock until it cracks and exposes a blob of phazon, which will get really bright and make your thermal visor go yellow from the heat.
At this point, you gotta turn the thermal visor OFF, and continue hitting the phazon-rock until it blows. After this, he'll curl up into a ball, and roll around, trying to run into you. When he does this, just hit morph ball and move away from him.

^_^ samus is just kick a**, i guess i luv her cause you don't get too many "intellegent" female characters in games anymore....metroid is just one of the best games out there, and as a plus the main character is a female, just goes to show that girls can kick butt too ^_^

That's the basic principle of fighting him, yeah, but once he blows the top off of the arena where you're battling, you can't see ANYTHING with the thermal visor at anytime so it's just...luck if you can hit him! I think that's what bugs me. As far as I can tell/have read (and I've been lurking around on the net trying to find some kind of helpful tip for a couple of months now) there isn't any skill or item, it's just luck.

The Power Suits! From left to right: Metroid 1 (NES), Metroid 2: The Return of Samus (Gameboy), Super Metriod (SNES), Metroid Fusion (GBA), and Metroid Zero Mission (GBA).

User Image

In my sig you can see a close up of Samus in the Gravity Suit from Super Metriod, Samus in her blue flight suit, called the Zero Suit, from Zero Mission (and this is also how she'll look in the next Smash Bros game for the Wii), and finally in her the Varia Suit from the GameCube games. You can find interesting game info and pics on all of the suits here , including the Phazon, Light and Dark suits.

Hmm.. I don't know what to tell you. It's been a while since I've fought him. Check the web for a strategy guide. There are quite a few good ones floating around.
Also, you might not want to play Echoes until you beat Prime one. Certain things will make more sense that way.

PS: Samus' blue suit in Metroid Zero Mission is called the Zero Suit. Her regular yellow one is called the Power Suit. And you forgot the Light/Dark suits in your poll.
