DO
Color balance. Get at least 2 colors and spread them though out your avatar evenly.
Buy white and black Lex gloves. These items will work with many outfits. (female item only, sadly.)
You can never go wrong with a pair of great shades.
STAY AWAY FROM:
Sets. Buying an entire outfit in a set is bad. Use no more than 3 items from a set if its a large set package, or 2 if its small.
FOX SET! Burn em'. Simple as that. Unless you are cos-playing as a fox the fox set just don't match. Its normally a random item thrown on that most 'noobs/newbie' tends to quest for and were. It looks horrible no matter what. ... same with coon tails, they just don't match.
One color: All black avis a over done. Try to add shadings or color.
Donation item whore. Just cause you have all the 2006 donation items it does not make your avi look rich just cause you put them on your avatar with out reason. Limit yourself and make sure that dragon matches.

&Try to make your avi flowing but not overdone.
&Come up with your own combinations, NO SETS!
&Have a hair cut that matches with the magority of your outfits.
I can't think of anymore right now.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to voice a disagreement of the 'no sets' comments.
A full set can look good if used properly.
For example: I've used three out of four items in the work set rather successfully without making it completely obvious that it's nearly a whole set. I've seen the university set work incredibly, and also the pinstripe set and dancer set.
Just because it's a set doesn't mean it's not workable. Someone would need a lot of creativity in order to pull it off, but it shouldn't be considered an unbreakable rule.
As for tips for guys who can't wear lex gloves..
Those (Black) 90s Gloves are just as great. Don't forget that Medical Gloves layer over (nearly?) all others, and us guys don't have even close to all the colors of gloves that the ladies have.
Buy a leather belt and a tie. These two things I use in almost EVERY outfit. A black leather belt and a black tie are some things that once you have, you may never get rid of.
Avoid buying a wetsuit also. The layering is so bad now. It layers over all pants. It's really not worth it.

I do think that if you can make a set look good, then go for it.
But so few people can its just eaiser to say to not do it.

well, one main thing for me personally, is backgrounds. I hate hate hate them.
Some people canmake them look great, but I have yet to run into one.
and another thing I like to do when I wanna make an awesome avi is ask for other's honest opinions. It may look great to you because you made it, but one color may be blue instead of white, and you not even realise it

there are 2 types of backgrounds, the ones with pictures, and the ones that are just items of a theme.
I dislike the pictures ones. But the themed/ item ones i love. =]
Like ze bubbles, or wings, stuff like that.

So...I tried with the gwee upon the avi for awhile.
I didn't put that much effort into it though, maybe five to ten minutes.

As for the fox set... here is one with just the ears.
The tail is an useless item that matches nothing.
