Welcome to the unofficial, run of the mill, get-er-dun thread for NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup. This thread will mainly discuss the trends of the online sector of the game, and occasionally it crosses over to help the offline, Fight to the Top mode of the game as well.
I figured this would be a good place to put this, seeming I play the game so often, that I'm a regular. In the Xbox community, I'm ranked in the top 25 of Top 5 and Top 10 finishes, so people come to me for advice.
Playing on Xbox Live or PS2 Online have different advantages and disadvantages, which I'll discuss in more detail later on. Also, I'll cover the most important 2 things about online play: "Car Setups" and "Racing Clean", both of which are hard to get down.
"Car Setups" is practically the first thing most guys ask on the headset. If you got everybody using default setups for the track you're on, you're in for one heck-of-a race. If 1 guy (or gal) has a car setup that's any good, you're not gonna get first unless you're that guy (or gal). If 2 or more have setups, good luck getting first after the pit stop, good buddy.
"Racing Clean" is the next thing you'll get asked. EA Rep and the DNF percentage usually show you the racers who wreck and run, but good EA Rep (near 300-500 approx.) shows you the truly great racers that you want to draft with clean, maybe a little bump drafting on Superspeedways.
My Xbox Live Gamertag is Wickedneoq, so if you have a way to voice chat with me, I can go into more details about why we're all into the hardcore stuff. My first Car Setup I'm going to discuss is for this weekend's track: Talladega! Stay tuned and you'll see why it's a restrictor plate race...
UP NEXT: My search for others on Gaia who race NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup in... "WICK ON THE STREET!" 3nodding
COMING SOON: Daytona, under the lights, with them power happy Craftsman Trucks! (You know meteor, they sure can't draft, but they go as fast as the Cup cars using the plates! eek It's true, I checked...)

Wickedneoq's (Leaked!) Car Setups #1: Talladega
I'm about to leak my top secret, awesome and fast car setup for Talladega, which has me barrelling up the stats ladder. All I race lately is Nextel Cup or Busch Cars, and Talladega. Most of the time, I go Nextel->Talladega->Alabama 500, because then it sets up the night race version, which helps you rather than hinders you. I'll explain more into that in a bit.
Talladega is all about speed, and keeping good control on it. With or without driving assists, it's still a challenge to be had. The backstretch is the fastest portion of the race track, yet all 5 corners take patience and timing to figure out the best line, which isn't always the informative one.
Using the default settings, we first experimented with Tire Pressure, and found that 30 psi gave higher top speed than 25, the default setting. So, we boosted that up since no one likes maxing out at 194 MPH down the backstretch and having computer cars draft with you forever. Next, we maxed out the downforce of the wedge, all the way to +4.0. Actually, this was found out by looking at Nascar Thunder 2004 stats and finding this information to work. Our cars were hitting 196 down the back, and 193 all around the corners, so it was nice.
Then, someone found the gold mine of the car setup: Gear Ratios. In default settings, you're started with Gear Preset 10, which was meant for Daytona and Talladega specifically. By altering 4th gear down to 0.80, and 3rd gear to 1.00, guys started hitting 198 down the back, and 194 around the corners! Sweeeeeeet, we got some good speed here. Now, we gotta see if we can keep it that way. The problem with the setup now is we're losing speed off the corner, thus guys are passing us on the inside off turn 4, and in the tri-oval.
Suspension was the last thing we tested. It seems in long races, tire wear was an issue, especially with speed comp (aka Catchups) on using Limited or Full Assists. It's was still an issues after the testing, but with tweaks and a bit of loss of speed, tire wear's not a big deal. With Front Suspension set at 1%, steering becomes much easier to manage. With Rear Suspension set at 100%, there's no fine line between loose or tight when in the corners, and when you leave turns 2 and 4, you slingshot off the corner, making you able to pass on the outside with enough momentum or draft help.
At this point, guys are hitting 199 on the backstretch, which is downright amazing, and 195 at the end of the corners, which is also pretty stellar. Now... the rest of the story.
Drafting is important at Talladega. So important, that without it, you lose with speed comp on or off. With drafting such an issue, you have to learn to give and take Bump Drafts. These get your cars up around 207-209 MPH on the back stretch, and it CARRIES around the corner. Use the Share Draft button to keep from wrecking, as it happens a lot to careless drivers. In a pack of 3 or 4, passing is hard unless you and another guy decide to team up. With a team of 2 against 1 guy, you can pass anywhere given you have room. With a team of 2 against a team of 2, now you've got quite the 2 wide battle on your hands. Good luck passing and blocking, because if you block, you wreck.
Thanks for reading my long spell on Talladega's race setup. It's great and competitive for online play, and it blows the rest away on F2TT mode.

Talladega Super Tip: Why the Alabama 500?
When you choose the track, you can also choose the event. The Thunderplates give you the Alabama 500, which is a night version of the EA Sports 500. Switch to it if you decide you're qualifying, and notice the wall shadow all the way around the racetrack. Drive along the shadow of the fence for the zero lap to build up speed, then move to the racing line for the timed laps. With the right setup, you'll hit a Q-lap of 47.850!

Results of Xbox Live's first NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup promotion!
In the allowed time of 2 hours, NASCAR driver ELLIOTT SADLER (yay, he is so cool) got to compete with the best of Xbox Live's Nascar drivers (most of whom raced Sadler so many times, they bragged about it, and the room was so full it was impossible for people not near North Carolina to get a race in with Candyman38, Sadler's gamertag [no, he doesnt accept friends unless you could beat him]).
Number of times Sadler raced: somewhere between 30-40 races Places he raced at: Most of the time, Lowe's, because he's there. Other times, Martinsville and Talladega, just to mix it up. Number of times he DNF'ed: Lots! Number of wins: 1 Number of guys he beat in that win: 3 Number of Elliott Sadler fans he beat in that win: 3 Number of guys he raced 3-4 times before that let him win one: 3 (sigh, those clowns)
It was impossible to even see him post a race, because by the time you saw it, it was gone.
All well, all in good fun, boosts the popularity of the game a bit, and will send future drivers in on "Race to the Weekend Day" on Xbox Live (Wednesdays mostly).

Beware! New pit glitch...
If you enter the pit too close to the pit stalls, no matter how fast you go, your car will be subject to the "Pit Glitch". Here's a diagnostic of what happens: Your car reaches 13-14 MPH and stays that way, you sometimes don't pit, AND you come out at zero RPMs and in 1st gear. What does all this mean? Trouble if you're at Talladega and even more trouble if you can't get your red tires changed...

Thanks for all the info! This should really help me a lot. I just barely got Chase for the Cup, my mom couldn't buy it for me for Christmas. The first thing I did was race the trucks at Daytona, and I was kind of disappointed.
It acts as if they put restrictor plates on the trucks. The trucks should easily be able to get into 4th gear by turn one without the restrictor plates, but instead, I'm shifting to 4th coming out of turn two. And it takes about a full lap to get up to speed, whereas the trucks should be able to get to full speed by the end of the backstretch.
Overall though, I love the tweaks they put in Chase for the Cup. I'm still quite the rookie at it, but it appears I can use similar adjustments from Thunder 2K4. Can't wait to hear more of your info.

I tried the setup you suggested for Talladega, and holy crap, did it work!
On qualifying, I ran the high line on the first lap to make sure my momentum was built up, and I won the pole anyways!
Started the race, and I pulled away from the field. A setup like that has to be illegal at Talladega.
I tried a similar setup at Daytona with the Trucks, except I didn't change the gear ratios, and worked very well. Previously I'd qualify 7th and would finish around there all the time, this time I would win the pole, and I could lead a draft without holding everyone up.

It's true though, the setup system is the same as Thunder 2k4 (actually, there's an easter egg in C4TC that involves the Randall Parker #56 car... check out the pitboard wall wink wink ). Just tweak the setup a bit and you'll own at Talladega.
I've come across the best XBL player when the game came out, CCNumber1, and he'll leak me his amazing Bristol setup in due time.

Hey i helped make this game. You can crash the game if you pit at martinsville or something. If two people go in at the same time i think the game crashes. I worked on the NGC version tho so i dont know much about the online. Look for my name in the credits, Joe Callaghan.

I worked on the NGC version tho so i dont know much about the online. Look for my name in the credits, Joe Callaghan. It's TRUE! I checked... You can stupidly miss your pit stall if you pit at Talladega too close to the pit wall on online. (Yes, I've done it before and it hurts. Those pits are screwy! I love it AND hate it!) Just as big news as getting a QA guy from Nascar 2005 into our guild is this that I just pulled off Xbox Canada's newsletter to me... Game with Fame: Kyle Busch NASCAR driver Kyle Busch is revving up to race with Xbox Live⢠members! What's the game? NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, of course. Kyle Busch will be playing on Xbox Live from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. Eastern/11:00 A.M. to noon Pacific on Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Look for the Gamertag KB5Grrreeat. eek YESSSSSSSSSSSS! THEY'RE DOING IT AGAIN!!!!! *dances* This means I gotta get a crap load of awesome setups ready... I hope Kyle can drive Talladega. blaugh

I hate Red Ball... It's so awful... I hate it so much... because it's awful!... And there's really... no point to it... but I got a 14.897 using my Busch setup! *breathes*
Nascarsetups.com (NSR) is my new home, because we have Nextel Cup and Busch seasons on Xbox Live (so EA should be thankful for Kyle Busch day working, since most of the guys who parttaked were NSR's guys).
My friend CCNumber1 got to race Kyle twice, and it's been confirmed that yes, Kurt Busch does sound like an alluring school teacher in person. Insert girls' giddy squeals here.
Because I was so far away from Kyle's connect (damn satellite broadband that he had and all), I never got in once, but 5 times I could look at my friends' list and see where he was in relation to the others.
And Kyle kicks major butt at Lowes', hint hint. Every time he went there, he won. With no help, because I know the NSR guys just couldn't touch him.

IT'S SETUP TIME.... IT'S SETUP TIME.... 3nodding
Lemme get my food, then we'll get to the setup.... Hot-lanta!
First off, I love Atlanta. It's a lot like Lowe's, but with less lights and more emphasis on keeping the car glued to the racetrack.
Tire PSI - 15 Fender Flare - 73.0 Rear Spoiler - 45' Front Springs - 72% Rear Springs - 82% Wedge - +1.0 1st- 1.70 2nd- 1.25 3rd - 1.03 4th - .82 Rear End - 4.40
The gears I stole, I admit that. They are pretty good. Modifying the 4th gear doesn't help so don't bother. Rear End is cranked to 4.40 just because we want to GO BABY GO! Suspension is the hard one to talk about. I like to go fast, but I also like to go long distances, I'm in a league so I have to. In longer races, you need to race AI not your opponents (assuming 39 AI cars are breathing down your rear spoiler). This setup does that. It qualifies well, races smooth and keeps on the track like it should, IF you drive it right. It gets loose with tire wear, all setups do on this track (watch the exit on turn 2, you wiggle and might tank slap off it, but you'll be fine).
Tire wear is simply amazing. In 50% races (what we race in leagues), 162 laps at Atlanta is long and troublesome. What if your tires burn so much you can't make it through the race on 3 stops, like the AI cars do? You have 2 options: 1) Make a fast setup and pass AI over and over to lap them, then pit 4 times and still win by distance; or 2) Make a consistently fast setup, not as fast as number 1, but can guarantee a 3-stop strategy. This setup pits on lap 43... RIGHT BEFORE AI PITS the first time, then pits on 87 and 129. It drives itself the rest of the way, if you're careful. You'll gain 7 seconds on the AI per pit window, meaning your lead on AI by the end of the race should be around 20 seconds, maybe more, maybe less. Finishing Atlanta is better than not finishing Atlanta. BECAUSE IT'S HOT-LANTA, BABY! GO BABY GO!
