Fatherhood was just as difficult as he remembered.

Of course, the first time around he only had one cub to care for. Now he had six, and as far as he could tell, the difficulty increased exponentially. It all left the big pinto lion very tired. Which is why he was making a bit of an escape, a little outside of the general area, which had become, in his mind, the den. It was a great deal more then just the jungle cave; it included the romping area around it.

So, he had to get a bit further then just a few feet away to get a break. Despite that he still was still not far from the little home. He couldn't bring himself to really be too far from the girls, even when he was hunting he was worrying. Which probably explained why he was oh-so-exhausted. He hadn't gotten a restful sleep since the cubs were born.

Ah well, it was worth it. With a tired, long sigh he laid his head on his paws, closing his eyes slowly.

A moment of relaxation.

"All I'm saying is that one seems a bit...off," Hasana had told Triv earlier, concerning Ohahira--or simply 'Hahi'. She also complained how lazy Swa was, but seemed to hold no grudge against the rest of them as of yet.

Being a mother the zebra-coated female could handle. Being the mother of six was another story.

And she wasn't above falling asleep even with Triv wasn't around. If one of them got eaten alive by a giant snake, or drowned, or got caught in a fire, or whatever else, they had five more. Though, she did generally keep an eye on Tara.

When Triv stepped out of her sight, Hahi acted as if the world was coming to an end. Up until she was distracted by first flower she saw.

"Oh, what a terrible life for such a beautiful thing!" the cub wailed dramatically, pawing around it. "Doomed never to move, to forever be rooted where you were born! But fear not, Colorful One, Hahi will pull you from the Earth and allow you to venture with her!"

"Ugh."

Tarajia flopped in the dappled shade of a flowering tree and tried to forget about the heat. She envied her mother's white coat; at least it was a little cooler... her own fur gleamed in the sun. So. Hot.

She watched with soft brown eyes as her father padded away, and for a moment the cub considered following him. Maybe he'd give her some more hunting lessons, or take her to the creek. Tara glanced at her mother. Anything to get a little time away.

Ohahira began to wail next to her. Something... about a flower? The cub rolled her eyes.

"Hahi, flowers can't move 'cuz they're not supposed to." Tara huffed a sigh and plodded over to her sister. Personally, Tara didn't think being stuck in the ground would be that bad. No responsibilities, no worries... well, beyond being ripped from the earth by a misguided cub.

"It's like... how we can't fly. We're not supposta." The cub explained. Not that she hadn't tried to fly. Her ankle still twinged from time to time...

Senna made it a habit of staying rather close to her parents most of the time. Not like she was scared or anything, she just liked knowing that she could count on them.

It was always a big descision on who to stay by though. Daddy never seemed bothered by her constant companionship, but momma was so... cool. Besides, she seemed to know more about everything.

At the moment she had decided to stay near to the others. Besides, daddy would come back and then she'd be waiting for him. He's probably like that. And anyways, other things demanded her attention.

"You shouldn't do that Hahi, if you do the other flowers won't like you anymore. Everyone knows that," the splotchy cub neared her sister, sitting just accross from her, nose in the air slightly.

"Besides, if it wasn't supposed to be there then don't you think momma or daddy woulda pulled it out first? You're so igna-igni-uhm, stupid."

Plants, flowers, who was where, and flying were none of Swa's concern - though, to be honest, the little female seemed to really only care about two things: the first, sleeping, the second, making sure she wasn't left or forgotten. So long as she had those two things, Swa was content.

Unfortunately, one of those said necessities was sorely lacking that afternoon. From where Swa lay under the shade of a twisted, treacherous looking tree, she watched her sisters meandering about the clearing as she herself panted slightly. She'd stretched herself across the ground, belly flush with the earth in an attempt to leech the cooler temperate from the dirt into herself. Her plan hadn't worked thus far, and she was still ungodly hot - too hot to sleep, too hot to even cat nap. The most rest she'd gotten in the past few hours were a few snatches of sleep, rudely interrupted by the neccessity to shift around to a cooler spot of earth.

Nnhgk. This was so, so miserable. Not even watching Hahi make a fool of herself was providing enough entertainment to distract Swa from her irritable mood. Ears flicked back, head down, the little female was the picture of indignance and pure annoyance.

Hahi had just (carefully) placed the stem of the plant between her jaws when Tara had started. Oh, the reflection of the uncle! How quick she was to dismiss ideas! "Oh, but Sister 1! You speak things that are wrong! The winged lions do fly! The Gods, the Goddesses!" She was yelling now, but didn't seem to notice in her excitement. "Mother has told me of them! They fly like the birds!"

Her head tilted at an odd angle one wouldn't think was possible for a lion, and her eyes stared at Senna for only a few seconds before she began again.

"And you, Sister 3, should know better! This flower is a lone flower, and no other flower would mourn it's leaving the Earth, or the one who caused it. And the elders, oh, THE ELDERS! They are wise, but not wise. They lack what we have: Youth and imagination. And I, I speak to the plants, and the trees, and this flower--the BEAUTIFUL flower--it wants to BE FREE!"

Hurriedly, Hahi plucked the flower from the ground and trotted merrily around with it. "Yes, little flower, this is movement! This is freedom!"

Tara was slightly taken aback. Gods and Goddesses? What were those? And they had wings? She shot a slightly resentful look towards her dozing mother. Hasana hadn't felt the need to tell her this.

"Really? They can fly? Like a bird?" The cub exclaimed, turning back to her black and white sister. "What do they look like? What--" Tara cut off in the middle, flushing slightly at her outbreak.

There was another possiblility, one that seemed much more likely the more Tara thought about it. After all, she was her mother's... son. Momma wouldn't hide something like this from her! And Hahi was known for making up stories. The cub narrowed her eyes and her blush darkened.

"Hahi, stop making things up!" Tara's voice was tart, her expression something close to exasperation. "Someday you'll tell the truth an' no one will listen!"

But after watching Hahi prance about the clearing, bent stem in her mouth, Tara had to conceal a grin and force it into a dissaproving frown. After all, her sister was right... well, sort of. Perhaps it was better to taste a little freedom and die than be chained to a fate you could never change. It was just a flower.

Nuymbani's eyes flicked from sister to sister, a brow raised. They were all quite amusing, and for the time being she was content to watch their flustered speaches. Naturally, Nyu was tottering about near to mother, though not to near, she wouldn't want to dissapoint the figure head. If she was too close mother would think that she had lost her way and that she needed the guidance of Tara; and Nyu certainly wouldn't have that. Ears moving coldly about, she suppressed a yawn. Sharp white claws flexed as she spread her legs forwards, finally standing. She supposed it wouldn't hurt not to be next to mother for at least a few minutes.

Her white paws sunk a little in the earth, her heavy first born weight clearly showing. Despite this, she was still a thin cub, her ribs slightly showing. It wasn't though she didn't eat, her appetite was varacious, but she simply did so much bounding about to protect her siblings that it all slid off her bones like butter. Not that her siblings needed much protection, mother seemed to be sure that Tara would do all the protecting for them. Balderdash. Her sister didn't know a fly from a warthog, at least when it cames to watching and being strong. Yet, she was her sister, and Nyumbani wouldn't want life any other way.

Plodding lightly, her first stop was Swa. Lazy, beat down, dead looking Swa.
"You look horendous," she toyed with the little one, plopping down beside her sister. "For all the rest you take you'd think some of it would wear off into beauty." This of course, was a complete lie. Nyumbani knew that all of her sisters were at least passable, and none looked 'horendous'. Still, with all the sleeping that Swa did one would think she was ill or near dead.

A large yell from Hahi perked the elder sister's interest. She cocked her head to the side, watching as the silly one plucked the flower right from the ground. She felt sorry for the poor thing, not able to grow in its heavenly spot anymore. When the flower died, the younger sibling would learn that some flowers don't want to be free. There was no use trying to convince her, as poor Tara was finding out.

A small chuckle escaped Nyumbani's lips as she watched them.
"You know," she thought aloud. "Of all the sisters, you, Swa, are possibly the braniest." She meant it only in a sense that this lazy sister of hers seemed to get everything out of life. Sleep and company, what more could one ask for? Tara had to worry about mother's constant whims (A responsibility that Nuymbani would gladly take from her), and Hahi was rolled over in marvels of drama and life, Senna seemed just confused, and lastly, her sister that almost disgusted her, if it was possible to be disgusted by a sister. Nice. Absolutely warm hearted and calm temperamented. It was dispicable. Perhaps one day that sister would learn her lesson, until then it was watch watch watch and protect. The forest wasn't a place for happy go lucky lions, that was for sure. Was she the only one that understood this? Or was it just because she was the eldest, and listened so thouroughly to mother?

Yes, there was no way around it anymore.

Hahi killed the flower, which obviously belonged there, and then she spouted stupid stories that obviously were definitely mostly surely untrue.

So it was necessary that Senna take action. What else could she do?

That's right!

"DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaad, Hahi killed the floooowerrrrrr!"

A call that was whiney and smug all at the same time. Senna had perfected it in her short life. She needed to, after all, her sisters were quite the bother.

Triv felt fantastic. For the first time in.... for a long time he had a break. His eyes drooped, then closed, and then finally the warmth of sleep overcame him. It was as beautiful as death to him.

It stood to reason something would have to interrupt him.

With a sigh and a creak he stood, hopping off the low rock and heading back to see what was wrong. Hasana wouldn't bother with it, and besides, he'd been called by name.

Senna was a good kid, but it would be nice if she would inherit a bit of Swa's relaxed nature. Perhaps then he would get some sleep.

The black and white splotched cub bounded by, and he was once again faced with the inevitable fact that he would never rest, ever, ever again.

"What's wrong?"

"Ohahira is lying again!"

The pinto-colored cub froze with one paw dangling in the air. The flower dropped from her mouth, and she turned in a very odd way before bounding over to Father and Sister 3.

"You betray your own blood?! A plauge on your soul, Sister 3! You are a being that will be untrusted if forever you continue to wail the name of the birth-givers in such a way!" In short, she was getting annoyed her sibling was telling on her. ...And she wasn't lying!

Hasana grumbled and pushed herself up, grudingly moving over to Triv and the two cubs that had gathered around him. Wordlessly, she lifted Senna by the scruff of the neck and trotted over to a rotten, caved in tree trunk. She plopped the cub inside and said, "Stay.", then went and snatched up Ohahira.

She sat her down a few feet away from the other cubs, repeating, "Stay.", then plopped down herself, rolled over, and was snoring only seconds later.

Well, that was one way to deal with Hahi.

Tara watched soundlessly as her mother snatched up each cub, condemning them to solitude as punishment, then promplty slept again. Tss.

And now there wasn't anyone to play with -or- be mad at. Great. Tara glanced over at Swa and dismissed her lazy sister immediatly. Boring. Perhaps she could sneak away? Maybe Senna would come with her...

The thought of adventures brought a sense of excitement tingling through her limbs. Momma always says I should take charge. And the woods were dark and so interesting! Such sounds and smells...

I'll just wait 'till Daddy goes back to sleep...
