I want to keep this thread very open for discussion, instead of raping your brains with paragraphs of information.

The idea of legalizing Pot has been increasing.

What are your opinions, comments, and questions? (I will answer all questions to mine and the internet's best ability wink )

If you guys decide that me not giving you any information is kind of lame, feel free to check out the ED discussion of one of our own guild members =)
Marijuana - Should it be Legal?
PostPosted: Mon Sep 04, 2006 4:15 pm

I've never actually smoked pot, I ended up high off it once just from being around the smoke for so long though (that was when I was 12). I think pot should be legal the way cigs and alcohol is. Like if you're doing pot some where or in a situation where others could be hurt because of it, then jail time should happen. But if someone was just sitting at home and no one was in danger, than I believe they should be able to use it. The only other law I'd want added on to it something I think may already be with alcohol, that's if someone is pregnant they shouldn't be allowed to do drugs because of how it could affect the fetus so easily. And that if the mother couldn't control herself she should just be put in rehab or somewhere that people can keep an eye on their behavior. Mostly I just started thinking this when I thought too far on a joke, it was one that took those Zoloft commercials with the little white cirle guy being depressed and then told you to talk to a doctor about the drug, but the replaced Zoloft with xtc. Then I started thinking that some antidepressants have horrible side effects and barely even work. Drugs like pot and such can have bad side effects too but if they help people the way an anti depressant would I don't see why it should be illegal. Plus if things as addictive as cigs and alcohol are legal I don't see why pot shouldn't be aswell.

I think every drug should be illegal. *sheilds self from projectiles*
Because they like, hurt you, and stuff.

Being the libertarian I am, I think it should be legalized. I'd never do it myself though, but if other people want to hurt themselves... *shrug* call it Darwinism?

But in what way does Pot hurt you, do you think?

But how is Marijuana a harmful drug, in your mind?

Just wanted to comment and say that it is NOT illegal for a mother to drink while pregnant. It is totally recommended against by any doctor or person with half a brain.. but it isn't illegal.
I agree that a mother SHOULDN'T be allowed to do drugs while pregnant but the harsh fact of reality is.. too bad..
There is not a damn thing anyone can do if a mother chooses to. It's her choice and afftects her child.

Now.. To keep with thread topic..

Doesn't matter if pot becomes legal or not, it will not stop people from doing it. Do you think crack addicts sit there before hitting their crack pipe and think "Wow.. dude.. what I'm doing is illegal.. I should stop!". Hell no! They do it already because they don't care what the law says. Now I'm not saying pot is like doing crack. Far from it. But you get the point I'm making.
The people who want pot legalized are people who smoke it already. The people who smoke it already are going to keep doing it if it becomes legal or not.
There is so much debate over this topic but it is kinda a useless topic. Legalizing it will not change anything.

Yeah I was like 90% sure I was all turned around on the mother drinking thing. Not everyone that wants pot legalized smokes it already though. I don't smoke pot, the closest I've come to smoking was trying 1 cig when I was 12. But if pot were legalized I'm probably try it every now and then if I could handle the whole smoking thing with it. So legalizing it would change things for some.

The people who want pot legalized are people who smoke it already.

Far from true. While most people who use marijuana do want it legal, not all people who want it legal use it. I know plenty of people (both on Gaia and in real life) who don't use marijuana, some of whom have never and will never even try it, who want it to be legal. Plenty of police officers want marijuana to be legal because they don't feel it's worth their time to bother people who are using it. Many people want the economic benifits that would go along with legalizing marijuana (all of the tax dollars that would be collected from it, all of the legal jobs created for people to grow, process, package, and sell it).

For the most part, yes, we will. But that doesn't mean that marijuana shouldn't be legalized, just because people do it now, while it is still illegal.

Legalizing will change a lot, actually.

People will no longer be arrested/fined/inprisoned for marijuana use/dealing. Did you know that 54% of the people in prison are there for drug charges? Non-violent offenses! (Most people arrested for drug charges are arrested for marijuana, most people arrested for marijuana are arrested simply for posession) So there would be more room for dangerous criminals in prision if marijuana were legal.

Like I mentioned earlier, there would be great economic benifits from the sale of legal marijuana. Not to mention all of the billions of dollars that could be saved from the War on Drugs budget.

And police would have more time to chase down dangerous criminals!

There will be a good deal of change after marijuana is legalized.

That makes sense, but still.....something that actually tampers with the chemicals in your brain for the worse shouldn't really be legal, that's just the way I see it, but I guess if the person chooses to put themselves in a hole......

If anything that tampers with the chemicals of your brain is a problem then I guess you'd also have to be against any type of antidepressant or mood prescription too, right?

Which is exactly what pot works as for many people. An Anti-depressant.

I don't see any other side-effects to the temporary high you get.

It does.
It has even more medicinal purposes than they use it for.
