As you may or may not have heard, the famous "croc hunter" Steve Irwin died this Monday morning (Labor day) off of the north coast of Australia. The famous TV icon and animal conservationist was shot thorugh the chest by a stingray's barb. He had been swimming over the creature at the time to film it for a show, and it took his presence as a threat and attacked. Irwin has a wife, Terry, and two children, Bindi (born in '98 ) and Robert (aka Bob: born in '03). He also ran the Australia Zoo in Queensland.

I believe that I'm not the only person who is incredibly shocked and upset by this. Irwin was famous for his love of animals, and he was a real inspiration of love for creatures like reptiles that many people used to think of as only dangerous, creepy, and "gross." He truly was an inspiration to those of us who cared about animals like he did. He also, from what I've seen, appeared to be one of the friendliest and most genuinely good-natured people on the planet. He stopped his car during trips to shoo snakes off the road, always seemed to be laughing and smiling, and even waved and shouted hello to everyone on the street during a simple taxi ride in New York City (no matter what kind of looks someone gave him). The official article about his death from CNN can be found here.

Perhaps this would fit better in the Current Events topic, but I felt Irwin deserved to be on the front page of the forums, where everyone will see. The world, its people, and certainly its animals will miss him thoroughly. I know I feel like I still need to wake up from this bad dream.

According to new info posted on CNN form the cameraman who was with Steve, he stayed conscious enough after the attack to pull teh barb out of himself. He went under cardiac arrest afterward. Paramedics tried for 30 minutes to get his heart back, but they couldn't.

I know that, from the videos and such they have, the stingray venom is highly toxic with no antivenom and works by shutting down the circulatory system. As he was hit in/near the heart, this would have been a very quick thing for him.

I read that it hit two major spots on the left side of the heart. It is amazing that so many people have compassion for one man and his family like this. There are a bunch of people here with Steve Irwin in their sigs.

I bawled my eyes out when I heard. He was such a goofball, but a great and loving man. He will be greatly missed... Hopefully, one of his children will rise to take his place, eh?

And if the theory of reincarnation is correct...Come back soon, Steve! The world isn't as bright without ya. cry heart

Steve Irwin; famous national Australian icon; the Crocodile Hunter, died on the the fourht of September at eleven AM in Batt Reef while filming a documentary on sea creatures.

He was reportedly by himself when he came too close to a stingray. The creature reacted badly, sending its huge barbed tail straight upwards and into Steve's chest. He was pulled out, CPR was performed and paramedics were called, but it is presumed he died instantly as the barb pierced his heart.

When I heard this, it really depressed me. I was never a hardcore fan of his, but I liked him nonetheless - and I'm sure a whole lot of other people around the world feel the same way. Australia Zoo has pretty much dropped and shut down because of this. Most of the staff members were just too upset to continue working, and they don't even know if the place will be open tomorrow. There they were, unable to continue with their jobs because of the loss, and here I was on the edge of tears because of his death. And I wasn't even a fan, nor did I know him personally.

It must be horrible for his family, the people who knew him. If he's up there right now, I'm sure he'd be happy to see how his passing has affected all of us, and even more so the great things that he's done in his life. Steve Irwin's antics and behaviour may not have impressed you, and you may not have taken a liking to him, but keep in mind that many people do - myself included.

So yeah, this whole thing got me really sad. I didn't even find out until about six PM on the day it happened, since I'm on Gaia all the time. But Gaia was what informed me after all. There are threads popping up everywhere, have you seen them?

But anyway, here I was, not knowing what to do. Should I just sit here and bottle it up, discuss it, look further into the Crocodile Hunter's life, knowing that it'll probably make my situation worse, but wanting to know anyway? Those three options that I have listed are actually what I do most often in times of sadness - and also what I did (or tried to do) today.

Though I did something else that I hadn't done before. I prayed to God. And I thanked him for Steve Irwin, and asked him to help us all through this time of sadness. I even had my own little moment of silence for him. I can see how that'd be viewed as lame, but it felt good. Yes, it really did make me feel better, and perhaps it was just the fact that I could put my sorrow into words and say them out loud, but I like to believe it was something else.

that is accually not true the tape has not been viewed by his producer and friend. he was misquoted and it was later corrected last night. Due to the toxisity of the stingray poison and where it pierced his body, steve might have had enough time to think ouch from the barb puncturing him, but that's about it. He died pretty much instantly and painlessly. which for me is something of a comfort
