Hey all! My name's Nicole + I play Alto Sax. I have been granted the position of saxophone section leader for the upcoming marching band season. Monday is our band's first rehearsal, for the Memorial Day parade.
So, I am asking all you experienced section leadrs, or just students, out there for advice. What's a good way of teaching commands? What, do you think, is the most effective music memorization technique?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I see a possibility of turning this into a "Section-Leader Thread" mrgreen
How we have sax threads, clarinet threads, and now we can have a Section-Leader thread...
As for advice; I don't know. Our school doesn't have a marching band and I'm not really that close to being first chair. lol
Psst....Maybe change the topic title to "Section Leaders" wink

make sure they know who's boss too... don't be too domokun with the commands, but make sure they know that you are their leader and they have to give you respect.
it's my first year as section leader and some of these i had to learn the hard way...

well, as Drum Major, i would recommend being nice, but firm. let them follow you under "wanting to" not "having to"....when giving advice ask it..."hey, i think the music says this...hmm...what do you think?"
also, i was taught:
give complement on playing/what they are doing right correct them on the mistake give another complement on something different that is good!
that way, they still feel...non-insignificant. =3...
remember...there will be buttheads -_-; rolleyes
mrgreen congrats on section leader!

it's always good to spend some time with each individual to help them on their weaknesses or to just fool around with them heart ...hahaha! just joking on that but it's good to speak to people privatley because they might be embarrassed if you center them out in the group.

remember, even if you make a mistake..never let on that you are, correct it quietly and dont mention it. =3...you are the leader now, and the less confident you appear..it shows! and the less confidence your followers have...but there is a difference between confidence and cockiness....

advice for a section leader?
-never ever yell for no reason -always make sure you know what your doing, if you dont ask the bd -always give good parts to deserving band members -if people annoy you, dont yell...just tell them what they're doing wrong or tell them to knock it off -try to make it fun
just some hints from maybe-section-leader next year ((im only gonna be a sophmore xd , then again we only have 4 trombones right now xp ))

I would say to be nice to them and don't have the attitude of "i'm in charge so you had better listen to me". Be nice, but firm and earn their respect. and if you have a complete and total A$$ in your section talk to the bd about them...

YES ! i have the hardest time with yelling at people though. i was section leader for the first time last year and i had someone else from my section yell for me... redface This year though she went back to being a color guard... so im all alone! Its just me with a bunch of soon to be 10th,9th,and8th graders... LUCKILY we moved it back up to 8th grade... in the past its been 7th-12th grade gonk

Fa, fa, fa. ninja I play alto as well. In our section, we have these things called T-drills that we use for punishment. They work for pretty much any instrument, but it's mainly our section that uses them.
If someone misbehaves, have them stand with their feet together and their arms stretched out in a T. Then hand them their saxophone and tell them to hold on to just below the neck. They have to hold it there until you say they can stop, and you get to yell at them more if their arms are too low or at uneven levels.
T-drills are so much fun. biggrin
