As I look through the graphics put up in this guild, it makes me cringe and shake my head. Now, don't get me wrong or anything, most of them are nice, but there's one problem with them.
Overuse of brushes and 3rd party resources. Okay, maybe they aren't overused (some of them are) but the nerve of having slapped on brushes and textures on your graphics and calling it your own makes me sick. Because for one, you didn't make the brushes and textures. I get the concept of the resource being meant for people to use, I make textures myself, but most people’s graphics on this guild are filled with them, and all of you have the nerve of calling them your own.
What’s worse is that you guys don’t seem to credit the creators of the brushes. Just don’t get sued. x.o;
I know I just joined and some of you might think, ‘Wow, she’s quite rude,’. Why thank-you, I know I am. But I’ve been in the web design community for well over then 3 years and maintaining my own website.
So basically what I’m trying to say is.. try bettering your graphics by using your own skill and not other people’s work. If you must though, use SPARINGLY. It’s much more rewarded and you graphics WILL look better.
Now rant and b***h at me all you want. x.o;

No doubt about it, Sempai. See, this is why I admire your work. You use little resources and make your own stuff. Even when you use another's brushes/templates you still give credit. Gah, you simply rock man. You can even point out what people have in their graphics and how they made it. D: Pshaw, you're just blunt. >:3. Anyway, yeah. No argument here XD

Seriously though, I see what your saying. But you also msut remember that your applying your own techniques as to how you use those brushes to create new and different effects. And not everyone has the skill to make 3D abstract stuff or the skill in photoshop to make thier own. But jsut because your using something some one else made doesn't mean it's unoriginal.

When building a house do you credit the company who made the lumber?

I make my 3d models, textures, and stuff myself. I don't use art programs with brushes.
But yes, infact I trashed a really good layout for my site (which it why it looks like crap now) because I VERY SPECIFICALLY said in the commission info I did NOT want photoshop brushes used in the graphics.
And they were. stressed

When decorating the building, would you say you build it too?
If you do not like people using other peoples brushes/textures feel free to post a tutorial on how to make your own brush/texture.
I'm too lazy. People should go teach themselves or something. x.v;

I need a 3D Program. xD What do you use?

You say you decorated the room or made the room what it is. You never say " Yeah, I decorated these pixels!"

Personally, I don't think that has anything to do with using brushes, but I am completely with the OP here. Your analogy is more like, "Do you credit Adobe Photoshop when making graphics?" or "Do you credit the makers of your paint brush when you paint?" Brushes and textures effect how the piece of artwork looks. You shouldn't use them as a cluth to make your graphics look good. Is tracing seen as OK in the art world? No. Even if you change things about it or just copy the pose, it's not ok. Yet in graphics, people get praised for slapping some premade textures on an image and putting it on overlay. I just don't understand it. :/ I only ever use brushes when I find it completely impossible or too time consuming to create the part myself, for example I made a LJ icon for someone a few days ago and they wanted feathers on it. I'm not good at drawing feathers... so I got a brush. That's the first time I've used a brush in almost a year, and I think that is how everyone should make graphics. But I can see that is not going to change, as it has been this way since Photoshop, PSP, GIMP, and whatever else were invented. neutral

i agree theres brushes overuse, but still, most of people cant make anything with default brushes.
me for example, i deleted every single custom made brush i downloaded from my pc and ps, so im only on default stuff. and i feel alot better when i make sumthing
