Are there any books that you might pass in a book store that you just glance at and go, "There's no way in HELL I will ever read that/those"? Do you prefer to keep an open mind when it comes to reading? Or do you possibly just have no standards with books and read anything that falls into your lap?
I'm just curious how other people are with reading, because I tend to be a little picky. I almost purposely avoid Sci-fi or fantasy books that aren't in the teen section because there are just so many of them and I have no way of weeding out the bad ones. There are a few other types of books that I refuse to read as well, but I'd like to hear from other people on this subject.
I also absolutely REFUSE to read romance novels. I have a couple of friends who read some romance/horror novels and talk about one author in particular. I just roll my eyes every time. I mean they've admitted that just about every book has the same basic plot and same characters whose names change from book to book! They've also told me that there are several plot important sex scences.....PLOT IMPORTANT?! Yeah, after they told me all that there is no way in hell they're getting me to read them. Don't care if I'm being picky....*grumbles*
But enough of me ranting, what do you peoples think?

I won't those books about Captian Jack Sparrow that is aimed at kids. Curse you, Disney, curse you!!!!
I do have a friend who won't read books with animals that speak to each other, but not humans. She thinks it's a conspiracy, that animals are trying to take over the world, and that completely freaks her out.

I dabble in just about anything that falls into my lap. Truth be told, however, if I'm not particularly taken in the first couple chapters, chances are it'll be bookmarked for the rest of my life.

I have tried everybook that has come across my lap, only one could i not finish. Anne Colter... I read about 1 page an hour in her book, both because it was so boring, and because i had to look up everything she said. I hated it

I don't do westerns or romance novels. A lot of the "Literature" section is offlimits to me because I don't care for it. Most anything is up for grabs as long as its good. I usually only shop in the sci-fi/fantasy section but thats because that is where my interest mostly lies and books have gotten way more expensive so I have become more selective when I am buying. Borrowing is another story. If someone lends me a book and says its good I'll probly read it cover to cover.

I can be highly picky about what I read, and then there are times that I care less about what I read. But more often than not, I will not finish a book if it bores me or I don't like the plot. Anybody ever read Terry Pratchett? I will read ANYTHING by him. And then there are those flimsy little teenage romance novels which I refuse to read. In fact, I'm not much into romance novels in the first place.

The only book I ever refused to read was The Choclate War. I hated it and it was assigned reading. I was in eighth grade and I think my biggest problem was the gratuitous sexual situations and cursing. (I never used that kind of language when I was in school, so to read the f word every other page was like eek What in the world is she giving us?)

Guards! and Small Gods landed the fish to to speak. I lost my copy of Reaper Man and Moving Pictures which made me a bit sad sad

i will read anything capatavating, if isn't written well enough to bring me into its world then i have no use for it. i hate nything that has animals really some are kinda ok, but the ones that are comepletely about animals suck! i hate the redwall series! i also hate series that skip around, i mean seriously if the author doesn't find one set of characters in a series interesting and has to move on then there is no way in helli'm not gonna move on out of there. also the future, i have to intention of ever reading some idiotic book made by someone else on there veiws of what could happen in the future it is most often wrong and just plain annoying, i don't intend to live tell the future comes about so why should i care about some inconsequential happenings when i am long dead and buried?

Clarke has quite a few with talking aliens that look like animals (the octopi from the Rama series as an example)
