Vice Captain

It's been quite some time since a shipment of animals has arrived for Moreau's work, as well as some new faces to the island. Those last few correspondences went quite well, in fact, and Alphonse was happy to bring on more advocates to his cause.

With the Spaniard's crew now under his employ, the ship that takes people to and from the island should be significantly less rickety and prone to sinking if it did so much as bump a sandbar. It would be quite a shame if he lost another shipment of animals... he had been expecting one last month or so, but it never came.

It's sometime in the early evening now, and the man stands on the edge of the dock with his hands behind his back as he waits patiently for the ship. It was expected to arrive sometime tonight, and hopefully his waiting wouldn't be in vain this time -- this crew is supposed to be competent, for one, and the boat isn't three blocks of driftwood nailed together and with a moth-eaten stretch of canvas for a sail.

The last ship was such a pitiful loss.

Captain Eduardo Hernandez, he liked his new title, he even had it carved into his new fancy cabin door, and he repeated it to himself every night as he waited for sleep, or pensively ate his morning gruel. Anyway, Captain Hernandez stood courageously behind the ships wheel. This wasn’t too much of a change from what he had been doing before, but Eduardo had not had the time to train a new navigator.

Eduardo!” a young man pulled the Captain from his enlightened thoughts with rushed Spanish words, “Eduardo! There’s a problem, A big problem below de-

Eduardo grabbed the swab and stifled him. Some of the passengers were nearby, enjoying the view, and he smiled cordially to them although it seemed no one was really paying any mind. Out of the corner of his mouth, Eduardo scolded the boy in Spanish, “Cap-tain Her-nan-dez. There are no problems, only technical difficulties. The last thing we need is for the passengers to feel uneasy.. no, strike that, the last thing we need is for the doctor to be angry at us for making the passengers uneasy.

“But sir,” the young man managed to make out, “One of the animals, it’s gotten into some of the passengers personal belongings!

What are the animals doing near the passenger’s personal belongings!?” Eduardo shook the boy furiously, “Do you know what the doctor does on that island? Do you know what he could do to us if we made him angry!? He was keeping The Cap- Cristoval in a stable for Christ’s sake!!

The boy’s eyes widened in horror.

Get the other swabs down there and set everything straight now!” and with that Captain Hernandez pushed the boy back towards the lower decks. Then he faced the passengers. By now he had caused quite a bit of racket. Eduardo smiled nervously and chuckled. “These child, they are no good. Playing a bad game below, one of them hurt himself.” Eduardo made a little motion, bopping his head with his palm, “There is no thing to concern for.” Eduardo looked up in time to see he needed to begin steering the ship toward the dock. He shouted out some commands to his older shipmates to begin preparation for docking.

Edwin was in his own world, either oblivious or uncaring towards the spaniards lies and the ruckus near the other end. His eyes remained glued to the coast, and he breathed a sigh of relief.

A heavy sigh of relief, along with his other, deep breaths.

He was leaning along the outer railing, and had been for much of the past day, having not touched his gruel from the day. He closed his eyes.

Getting to shore once more would be good for him, and everyone concerned.

Bridgit sat near a strange man with a large mustache. She clutched her hands around the rail she was standing next to, digging her fingernails in, wishing to just be off the boat. Ocassionally she would turn and look out to the blue sea, but mostly had kept her head down.

She glanced up as someone started to speak hurriedly in spanish, then just looked down again, trying not to bring too much attention to herself.

That was the very last thing she needed.

Etienne was also standing at the railing, but well apart from the others. He'd emerged on deck after slipping below under the pretense of checking on his thing. He'd been a bit unsteady ever since. He was oblivious the fact that the ship was approaching shore, or that the wind was making a mess of his atrociously long hair.

His attention was on the water below. He stared with rapt fascination at how it moved, how the light danced on it, how the boat cut through it, and all the while it looked like he was barely succeeding in keeping himself upright. Couple that with the stupid grin on his face and... Well, something seemed a bit off about him.

Seeing the boat on the horizon, Alphonse knelt down and gathered up the rope in his arms to tie the thing to the dock when it approaches. It's good to see the thing intact, in one piece, and not flooded with water and ready to plunge below the briny depths. He waved to the men on deck, taking a few steps back from the edge to allow space for the ship to dock.

The ship, with every outward appearance of a perfectly managed and maintained ship -though a ship can’t really act, it can sure boast a great deal of human like qualities – meandered slowly and bobing-ly in it’s own nonchalant and innocent way, right up to the dock as a myriad of shady looking Spaniards, perubians, Spanish-Americans, and a few Africans, hopped dexterously down and began securing the ship to the dock with a skill and grace that, when compared with the crew of the previous ship, was awe inspireing.

Eduardo himself kicked the ship’s ramp over and in a very ceremonious way, firled his hands in a gesture that presented the whole of the island to the passengers, who still may or may not be paying any attention. As well as the great fanfare of motion, Eduardo had prepared a speech, “Doctors of various skills and trades, may I present to you the island what does not exist, ‘cept for those who have see her, the island of vast scientific porten and potential, the island… of Doctor Moreau.” He was very proud of his flawless English and boundless charisma... he’s such a good captain.

"Let's go, little boy."

It was his only acknowledgement of the young man beside him since he'd arrived at the bow along side Edwin, and would likely be all that would be said until his mood improved. With that, he turned, and prepared himself to leave that god-forsaken piece of timber.

Edwin was already half way to the docking plank as Eduardo spoke, and for that reason alone, as he stood arms spread, cutting Edwin off from the dry, sturdy land, that he now garnered his attention.

"I hate Enklish.." he muttered as the man's speech came to an end, and at long last, he passed by, the plank barely secured as he quickly strode down it to the docks.

Bridgit stared at the island, unblinking. She was starting to have second thoughts about what she was doing here and she felt the pit of her stomach drop. Suddenly roused out of her thought, she looked at Edwin.

"Huh, what?" Then blushed. Right. She was a 'boy' now. That was going to take some getting used to. "Oh. Thank you," she said, following.

"What...what's wrong with English?" she asked curiously.

It took a moment for the words to sink in, a little while longer for the fact they had docked to do the same. He had, perhaps, overdone it just a bit, but Etienne had the movement of the ship to blame for turning a n** into a gulp. For that matter, he wasn't even sure which bottle he'd drank from. All things to worry about later.

Etienne pushed himself away from the rail just as the others passed, avoiding a collision only by some stroke of luck and timing. He followed from a few feet behind, still a little unsteady. He'd have to mark things more clearly as soon as he had the chance.

Alphonse smirked at Eduardo's little display, helping tie down the ramp for the sake of stability. Once he was done, he straightened up and held out his hand in a wave.

"Hail," greeted the pale man, adjusting the wide brim of his hat as he put his foot on the bottom edge of the ramp and lowered his hand to his hip. "Yes, as... as your intrepid captain has said, this is my island. Welcome."

As the passengers disembarked from the ship, the men still on deck began tossing their luggage down to those on the dock, who began stacking it neatly in piles. A few of the articles, namely a leather trunk and a small suitcase, seemed to have been busted apart and hastily roped back together, another, more of a crate really, had been viciously clawed at, but the articles inside were still intact. The rest of the belongings had survived the small, unmentioned outbreak. There were two things Eduardo could only hope for. First, that the two items that had burst were from one passenger and therefore any mixture of articles was fine, and secondly, that the passengers would overlook their ravaged property.

Edwin peered back over his shoulder to the boy, "Bekause speakink it hurts my throt." and then continued down to the docks.

He extended one hand and introduced himself to the doctor, watching as the men unloaded the cargo. Odelia was somewhere on board as well, not that he'd been below deck much to check on her, but imagined she was in one of the crates.

"Hello, Doktor. I am Edwin Kortig of Germany."

"Oh."

The freckled faced girl scrambled behind Edwin, anxious not to get left behind. She hastened onto the ramp, stumbling a bit, but catching herself, far to gracefully, and took the last few steps down.

Standing just behind the German man, she watched him introduce himself, then took the cue from him and did the same. She took a deep breath, hoping her voice didn't sound too high and femanine.

"I'm G-George Pemberton Jr." she said, trying her best to make her voice sound like a younger version of her fathers. Low and smooth, but not gruff. She held herself up straight, almost forgeting herself briefly and curtsying.

Etienne followed a short distance between, taking the ramp with the slow, deliberate footsteps of a man trying very hard too look like he wasn't addled. Looking vaguely pleased with his successful descend- and no more steady for being on land- Etienne doffed his hat to Moreau.

"Etienne Riehl," he said. A few seconds passed before he remembered either his manners or his English, on or the other. "It is an honor, sir. Enchanted, I'm sure... Ah, that's two. Forget the last one."
