Ok, one of the best ways I know of to practice what I know is watching Japanese shows... no subs. Only unless you have a multinational dvd player, there is a big problem. Dvds, as we know are region coded, and so Japanese dvs will not play on dvd players of any other country.
NOW... it used to be as simple as finding a region hack for your pc's dvd rom. However recently, I'm told they began to make the dvd roms so that these region hacks no longer worked. My laptop is new, and sure enough, my old region genie doesn't work.
Region hacking, as far as I know, is not illegal. Of course the dvd rom makers and the dvd producers stand to cash in big if someone wants to see an alternate version of something they like, which will result in the selling of however many copies you want languages, but to my knowledge it is legal to bypass these region codes.
I have also heard that there is professional software now that you can get for this purpose, but I do not know whether it will work with a new dvd rom. Affording Japanese import dvds at around $40-$60 US for the "legit" product is bad enough. The average drama runs around $250 - $300 for a box set. I hardly have the money for a $200 multinational dvd player on top of it all.
My question... does anyone know of region hacking software, freeware or otherwise that works on dvd roms put out in the last year or so? Please let me know. I really miss my 'doramas'. crying

Just out of curiousity: where were you looking for multiregional DVD players? Mine was 160 back in the day, and I know of several people who managed to get theirs around 120USD recently.
I'm not sure about the hacks. :/ I'd like to know as well, because it make life easier with my new laptop. crying

One way I have found is that normally the dvdrom will let you change the region like 5 times and after that it will lock on whatever region it was last on. If you find the exact model number of your DVDrom you can normally get an app which will reset the firmware on the drive itself so then you can change it another 5 times, then just run the app again to reset it as many times as you need.
