I've noticed the general opinion on the 2004 PotO movie among Phans is "HOMGITSUCKSDIEDIEDIE!!!!!!!!" Of course there are the sect who like it *Raises hand* my first... like it better sorry everyone, either way ALW made a mochery of a good book. But the majority of Rentheads are like "Okay, yeah they cut stuff, but it was still a good/great/awesome movie."
The funny thing? Rent got no oscar noms (Which it should), and PotO got 3.
Comparing the two, in both a lot of singing was switched to talking and a bunch of songs were cut... in fact MORE songs were cut from Rent than PotO. I just wonder if it has to do with the material itself. Any theories?

As a RENThead and a Phan, I think people liked the Rent movie more because the original cast was in it, and although more songs were cut from Rent they kept the sequence together pretty well.

I'm also a RENThead and a Phan and I loved both.
I agree, having most of the original cast had something to do with it.
As for the Oscar nods, they Academy Awards are BIASED. 'nuff said.

Of course the academy awards are biased. That's one of those unalterable facts, like death and taxes. But on topic, I agree that the original cast has much to do with it (I'm only a RENT fan, not a RENThead, so I suppose my opinion doesnt' count quite as much). I also think it may be partly the change in tone in the POTO movie as opposed to the intense desire to stay true to the original in RENT. Making Erik into a barely deformed sex god, and so forth.

Pulling out another factoid here: PotO grossed almost twice as much as RENT in the box office

As a RENT fan and Phan, Phantom of the Opera is more well known. It also has a old, extravagent, romantic atmosphere, which is big bonus in the awards. RENT is a more in your face, this is reality type show. There are also those that will have not liked it just because of the crossdressing, language, and drugs in it. Take the song La Boheme for example.

Have to agree with Hjesta.
POTO is just more well known, it now being the longest running show, and RENT has just celebrated their tenth year. *shrug*
I love both, although I've come to believe RENT is the better of the two. Real life is so much more exciting than 'OMGyouloveRaoulandnotmesoIhavetokillhimtoimpressyou' Which is the plot essentially, along with hypnotism, orgasms and song.
And I feel like I suddenly betrayed my phandom...
Ooh, and Ryuuki, I am in love with the Mark ava. So spazzy and cute. *pets*

Another RENThead and Phan here...
I think some of what gave Phantom so much success over RENT was subject matter and some of it was the fact that it had been running on Broadway so long prior and some of it was the fact that it's freakin' Andrew Lloyd Webber. He's had incomparable success for so many years with so many musicals, at least 4 of which(Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and PotO) have been made into fairly successful movies. (I'm not sure if Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a movie...) He's got millions of fans and his name attached to it probably helped at least a little.
Also! Phantom had semi-popular actors in it. The names of RENT actors don't hold much significance for many people other than RENTheads. Honestly, before seeing RENT, the only actors in it I'd ever even heard of were Jesse L. Martin and Rosario Dawson.
(Note to self: Buy RENT. Watch it again.)

I've never seen RENT, so I can't exactly say it's better. I can say this, Phantom is the best movie(in my mind) since Monty Python and the Holy Grail.(Hey, it's not a big list in my mind. Not enough space for a big one.)
