So...This year for our marching show, we are performing the music to Carmen, the Opera, but the title of our show is "Our Tragic Hearts" (I don't know why). Anyways, in the end of the Opener, which is half our show, the flutes and clarinets river run to the sidelines, put down their instruments and pick up double silks. We have to river run to the back of the sideline through the rest of the band in a block....in 16 counts gonk . Then we go stand in a messy whatever form until the ballad, doing guard work.
I mean...Colorguard is awesome, but that set is incredibly difficult and I am not looking forward to completing the show after running around the field out of time, since just performing the opener itself is exhausting.
EDIT: Well, we have learned the colorgaurd work. And what's funny is that the gaurd even seems to have trouble with it at this point in time...even though we practiced the work for two hours straight after learning it. It's not that long of work, just ...*counts on fingers...6...16...16...16* 54 counts of work at 160 bpm.
EDIT:: HEY WE GET 10 FOOT POLES IN THE CLOSER HOMG!!! THEY IS SO BIG BUT THE FLAGS ARE SOOOOOOO PRETTY!!!
EDIT:: Since the only male flute player is the best male at doing the gaurd work between the flutes and clarinets (The clarinet guys are like "Ugh why are you making me do this!?! gonk " and doing the work real timidly and wrong), my friend, the male flute player, gets to tango in the closer with a colorgaurd member! ^_^ Lucky dawg! It's just him and the gaurd member dancing to the alto sax soloist's habenera solo.
Have you guys every had a strange and difficult set? Discush: Strange drill writes Difficult sets Woodwind lovelyness!

Woah Oo Thats alot to ask for from people who dont even do guard, and you're in uniform at the time? That would be kinda silly looking.

Yeah we are in uniform, and wearing shakoes with plumes that swoosh from side to side. It is pretty silly looking and we haven't even learned all the gaurd moves yet. Its fun, but tiring.

But they taught us to dance last year for our show "Ghost Train," using a lot of ballet so its really no big deal for us this year blaugh .

Blckpanthr13 But they taught us to dance last year for our show "Ghost Train," using a lot of ballet so its really no big deal for us this year blaugh . Ghost Train? Is it classical, sort of, and starts with a kick-a** flute solo type thing? What kind of guard work are y'all doing? Is it, like flourishes, and stuff or complicated work? Every band that I've seen spin always does annoyingly easy stuff. (This coming from the one that marches winterguard in the winter, so you know my prejuduce {sp?}) I think it's be awsome to spin during the fall! Oh well. I actually liek it when the band spins, especially the drum-line. One thing you might suggest is that you take off your shakoes. That could be really akward. My bun get's in the way during winter I couldn't imagine it with a flipin' shako! We're dancing this year, I think. I hope we do, anyway. That would rock!!

Yep that's Ghost Train...We had a real good director arrange it for us, like he does every year. But the flute solo at the beginning kicked butt. ^_^ I didn't get it 'cus I was a freshman, but my section leader did and she played it awesomely.
Yeah I understand your frustration with the easy gaurd work and stuff. We have some of the most saught after gaurd techs with us this year and previous years, and our gaurd is pretty good...they went to nationals last year and placed well ^_^ but they get mad at us when we forget gaurd work and we just wave our arms around and do random stuff...haha... but Its supposed to be flowing and very fluid and just accenting the part in the show, so its not incredibly difficult gaurd work. And about our shakoes....we don't have time to take them off! We have a 12 count hold at 160, then I personally have to basically sprint (river run) from the 30 yard line to the 5 yard line in 12 counts....then everyone has 6 counts to set down their instruments and pick up their double silks. Then we "sprint" backfield. We really don't have any time in between.

Heh, that's nothin'!
Every year we do a dance during a drum solo in the last tune of our show, and this year it ends with everyone doing jazz splits. In uniform. That's three layers of polyester.
I'll admit, it looks amazing, but it was a b***h to learn.

I have some strange steps this year... I play Tuba You see... and in our opener there is a woodwind feature. Everyone is faceing back field at said point and the Tuba's are still laying out the baseline. So if thats not bad enough i have to jazz run with a tuba facing backwards to make a circle that is i think... *checks dot book* roughly 20 yards. (45 side A to 35 Side B) Its not fair....... I think our BD is gunna give us a drill rewrite, but i guess its not so bad.... its just the fact that i have to avoid like 3 people from my own section while playing and nothing being able to see them... No sweat right?

I had one my freshman year where I was going backwards in one set (thankfully not playing) with steps way too big for my short legs. That sucked.

I have never seen jazz splits done correctly before, but I think that is kind of what we have to do when running backfield.
But last year during the drum break which is a 22 count accelerando, the flutes and clarinets had to jazz run backwards from the front sideline to 6 steps infront of the backsideline.....In 16 counts...while accelerating!
We had to get a lot of our drill re-written last year...but they never got to that set.

No sweat right? Hehehe...that sounds a lot like our drill set that the flutes like to call "Avoid the Tubas Jazz running backwards" Set. We are in a straight flute line and then it breaks to allow the tubas to pass through...but if we don't break the line in time, its flute roadkill.
