In the quiet of the jungle, there was a rustle, rustle, scratch-scratch-scratching. Pause. Near a small drop in the land formed by erosion, a pale figure crouched, hunched over, peering and sniffing for danger. It took a step forward, no, a hop forward, and its gait was most unnatural. Smeared in dirt, ghostly thin, and painfully weatherbeaten and dismal, was Fiona: lost not in the wilderness of the island, but lost to herself, lost in mind and spirit. Hope. What use had she of such a thing? Months had gone by since finally her mind snapped. Why resist? Why bother?

Rustle, rustle.

Alec whistled as he trudged through the jungle, hands slid into the pockets of his swimming trunks -his normal attire now. What was the point of wearing normal clothes when you had to take a bath every few hours?- and blistfully unawares. The sharkboy weaved through the trees, making his own path since no trails were known to him that stretched this area.

Despite his weakened sense of hearing, he could suddenly feel movement as if something had struck him, physically. He paused mid-step, dark eyes glancing around. It was probably a boar or wild lizard, right? Nothing too dangerous, right? He spotted a drop-off in the uneven landscape and his heartbeat quickened. Too curious to pass it by and force himself to move on, the irish teen crept over to where a bundle of exposed roots entwined the soil and seemed to hide something fairly noticeable to the eyes.

If it was a boar, he wanted nothing to do with it. So so he decisively stooped down and removed a damp stone from the ground, twisting it through his fingers before tensing his jaw and lobbing it at the 'creature'.

The once-a-girl squealed as the stone struck her shoulder, eyes going wide. Turning away from the betraying outside world, she scrambled into a burrow previously hidden by shadow. The soft loam beneath the overhang had been the perfect place to dig- and dig it she had, with paws that were knobbled and half-formed, and by then completely filthy. She made no sound, heart hammering in her ears.

Alec was stunned at the noise the animal had made. A chill ran down his spine as it rang in his ears, sounding more like a horrible amalgimation of animal and human rather than the squeal of a boar he had been expecting to hear. Shocked at the idea that he had just possibly flung a stone at a fellow Islander -or possibly a weird, tormented creature he'd never witnessed in the wild before- he crept even closer, falling to his knees as he reached the edge of the dropoff.

As he grasped the dirt he lowered his head to peer over, even farther when he saw the clever burrow that had been hollowed out of the soil. He could barely see inside without getting too close, a flicker of beige confirming that it had indeed retreated inside. Staring for a moment, he made the first reaction that always came natural.

"Sorreh." He uttered quietly, wondering if he really was apologizing to some stupid animal that wouldn't know or care what he was saying. If it was an Islander though, he truly did owe them a sincere apology.

A sound! She shrank back further, breath coming out in frightened huffs. Was it coming after her? Would it hurt her? The rabbit leaned forward, nose twitching and ears straining to move fully forward, restricted in movement by the limitations of transformation. What sort creature made that sound, the still-rational part of her mind asked. Sorreh! Sorreh indeed! Perhaps a bit of her true self surfaced, then, as she made the bold move of clumsily hopping forward and sticking her face out into the light. One look at Alec's face and she was gone again, scrambling fearfully back into the recesses of her burrow. Hide! Hide!

He heard movement and soon enough a face peeked out from the burrow, much to Alec's surprise. He would smile, amused and calmed that it was indeed an Islander from the looks of it. It also helped that they were apparently afraid of him, and therefore not a threat in his mind. Just as he opened his mouth to speak the person after taking one look at him, his smile falling. This was indeed how it was going to be like from now on, wasn't it? His stupid face.

"Ay... c'm on now." He sighed but was patient, settling himself in expectation of having to wait a little longer. Why was she so freaked out anyways? If she bothered to say hi, she'd realize he wasn't as freakish as he looked. "A' won' 'urt ye..... e'gain." He winced at his own words, realizing he'd really screwed up a first impression. Good job, throw another rock at her!

Voice. Hmmm, she hadn't heard one of those in a long time. In fact, the experience was quite unpleasant after the many days of solitude, accompanied only by the stir of the wind, the call of the birds, and the creak of the trees. Her brain knew that she should be paying more attention to those sounds, picking out syllables and recognising words... but really, she couldn't be bothered. In fact, there was something vastly more important at hand! Her escape tunnel wasn't finished, and here she was cornered by some great loud beast! So horrible a situation! Deciding that 'there is no time like the present', and very barely holding down panic, Fiona went as far back into her den as she could and began frantically scraping at the dirt wall, which was well packed from being slept against. Damn!

Alec was a little confused to say the least, when his words were answered by nothing but the sound of scraping from inside the burrow. Raising an eyebrow as best his face would allow, he made an effort to slide further down to get a better view of just what was going on in there. Unfortunately, he was abruptly met with a ball of dirt in his face.

The teen frowned, realizing what she was doing and partly irritated by the dirt to the eye. Grunting, he turned the rest of his body around and quickly hopped down off the ledge. "Wha' are ye doin?" He asked with a tinge of frustration. Now she was just making him feel bad!

Not bothering with the soil that was being thrown this way and that and with little regard to his safety, he crouched down directly at the opening of the burrow to stare inside. "Do a' gotta drag ye ou' o' theh meself?"

Ah! Ah ah ah! Predator! Right there! It was coming to get her! And making those noises again!

Fiona began to dig faster, frantically, keening very quietly to herself. Oh this had never happened before! How could she make it go away? She needed to escape from this beast before it hurt her! And, despite the fact that she'd never finish an escape tunnel in time, she continued digging. Only around eight feet into the ground on a slight decline, she'd be trapped for sure if it came in after her!

Alec sighed, obviously unable to get through to her. In fact, he could almost hear her scraping becoming more rapid. Was he that weird looking? "Look, 'am sorreh 'bout th'rock. A' though' ye were a' boar o' somethin! Those thin's are mean, yanno!" He continued reciting apologies, to no avail.

"Fine." He sighed again, quieter and more than likely lost in the noise of her frantic digging. Praying that she wouldn't gouge his eyes out the second she emerged, the irish boy leaned as far as he could and reached into the burrow, grappling for any stray limb he could get a hold of. Since she was digging, he'd most likely be able to grab a back leg. Or at least that was his theory?

Luckily it wasn't long until his predictions came true, feeling the furry limb as he grasped and gently began to pull back on it. This wasn't a very nice way to go about things and he'd most likely apolgize a million times after it was through, but she just wasn't listening to him when she was in that burrow.

The creature that had once been a spirited teenage girl let loose a terrified shriek as she was pulled from her sanctuary. Kicking with her legs and clawing desperately at the ground, she had, alas, not the calm thought to grab a root, or turn to face her opponent. So it was that she was methodically extracted from the burrow, and bared to the eyes of her captor. Literally.

Fiona's clothing had fallen apart weeks ago.

Alec was pleased to not have to yank hard on the Islander's legs any more than he had to, contently pulling her free of the burrow in hopes of talking some sense into her at last. Unfortunately, upon freeing her from the dirt, he immediately regretted it.

"GUH!" He yelped and promptly let go of her ankle, turning his head in away quickly. "Coulda... yanno, TOL' ME ye weren't decent!" The teen coughed and twisted himself around to the side, feverishly embarassed.

At her release she immediately sprang back into the hole, turning around when she was a few feet in and peering at him wide-eyed and completely unaware of the predicament caused by her lack of clothing. Not out of innocence, no- this was a different kettle of tea. It was ignorance. Ignorance brought upon herself by isolation for such a period of time that her thoughts had become dormant. She had allowed primal urges not even her own to drive her existance- and if it hadn't been for the overwhelming rabbit instinct that drove her to run, to hide, to feed, she likely would have given up on living altogether. She stared, fear in her very posture.

Alec would only know that she'd run back into the burrow by the noise of her movement, still refusing to turn back and look. Mumbling something under his breath, he remained still even though he felt like dragging her so far away from the burrow she'd have to confront him. In all his mind, he couldn't figure out why she was acting the way she was though the entire scenario was beginning to feel reminiscent of when he hunted for gophers or hare as a child, back home.

"Ye go'a believe me, a won' 'urt ye!" He insisted again, wondering if it was possible that she was deaf. "A' know a look like realleh weh'd bu' so does everh'one, righ'? At least accept me apologeh." The silence that followed urged him to glance over, see if she wsa ok at least. He wasn't perv or anything. He was concerned! Repeating that over in his mind, he slowly turned his head just until her blurry form entered his peripheral vision. oddly enough, it wasn't her nakedness that caught his attention the second time but more the fact that she was looking awefully gaunt, even frail. "Ay... ye ekay? Ye look sta'vin."

When he turned, she shuffled back another two feet, eyeing him warily. Her chest, should he have cared to notice, heaved in and out rapidly in the precise manner of a startled rabbit. She remained, other that that, perfectly still. Maybe it can't see her! Maybe it can't see her! Just stay still!
