Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop
Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad?

While i don't always tap my foot, it is very necessary in order make sure and stay in tempo. I'm in high school and my bd's still harp on some people (Percussion and trumpets mostly) to tap their foot.

sometimes it gets annoying, like at concerts and stuff, but mosty our BD encourages us to do it.
I like tapping just my toes though.

I tap my foot, and I can't stop because its the only way for me to insure correct counting, but...
What might be your BD's issue is if its distracting, either because you're in the front row, or otherwise extremely visible to the audience, or if your shoes make sounds on the stage when you tap during a concert. Those are the only reasons I can think of for them to not want you to.
And either way, saying that you're a baby for doing it just silly. I know professionals that tap their foot to every single thing they've ever played. Its not an immature way of keeping time at all.

There is nothing wrong with tapping your foot. Though, it might resonate a bit if you are on risers, there is nothing bad about it. I sometimes tap my foot, mainly just my toes. Other than that, I just randomly stopped one day, reallly. Wierd, eh?

My band directer has no problem with us tapping our feet in fact he taught us to! In class we can do our whole foot but at concerts when we are wearing our fancy shoes we have to do our toe inside our shoe so it doesn't make a loud clunking sound. I don't think tapping your doot is for babies but maybe you should try the toe tap instead so you don't get in trouble!

we did in middle school to help keep time, but now we basicly don't. we keep an internal pulse. foot tapping can just get me confused. o_O

I do it all the time even though my bd prefers us to tap our toes inside the shoe which I find hard to do

itap my foot all the time, and its usually uncontiencely- sorry if thats spelled wrong sweatdrop - but it's definatly not for babies, i cant not do it biggrin

Our old band director insisted you tapped your foot and threatened to cut it off with a chainsaw if you didn't... I don't think he had very much confidence in us... Anwho, our new band director encourages it, as long as it isn't loud or disruptive sounding...

i absolutely love tapping my foot.
yu know, i never thought of this issue-- thinking of it now, it may be considered bad form; however our bd encourages it.
i like when the whole band taps their feets at the same time.
p.s. dont stomp you feet or tap your heels- i think its more subtle if yu just use your toes.
i dunno...

we were taught tot tap our foot. i can't keep time without it!! YAY FOR TAPPING YOUR FEETS!!!!!! xd
