Have any of you read 1984 by George Orwell? It's a REALLY great book, written in 1949 by "George Orwell", whose real name was Eric Blair. He used a pseudonym to write under because this book is so....insane!!! Really great book for the older readers if you can get your hands on it 3nodding

Windmouse I've never read it sorry, what's it about? I know this is an old post, but just in case anyone else is wondering... It's about a totalitarian socialist regime in England based on what Orwell saw in the USSR. Winston is just a normal guy in this society. The story is basically about him, his semi-epiphany of government propaganda (it's not a real epiphany because he only half realizes what he is seeing to begin with), and his reformation back into the state. It's an excellent book. I must say, I've never looked at anything politicians say the same way again.

crystalsmuse Really... Would you recomend this book to anyone? And why? I would. It's long, it's boring at times, it was a difficult read. The writing style is just so...painful. But the ideas, the subjects it brings up, I think are vital to any growing individual mind. Like I said, I've never looked at politicians the same way again. This book taught me to look deeper and to be conscious of the propaganda that is all around me and affecting me. I honestly think that every teenager (ages 17-20) should have to read it.

I've not read it yet (been meaning to for years) but does anyone know if Equilibrium was loosely based on it?
I mean...bleak totalitarian futures are nothing new...just the styles seem close...intensive propaganda, drugged subjects, familear authority figure (1984's Big Brother, Equilibrium's Father)...those stand out unlike, say, the 'secret police'...there's never been authoritarian regime w/o them...

This was a great book but if I remember correctly it was written in 1948 (the year just got switched from 48 to 84) but then was banned from libraries and book stores because of its content for a year...but I could be wrong. Also it isn't that long, I can't remember the page count but it cant be anything longer then 200 pages if even that.
Anyways I love this book, I love his other book Animal Farm also dealing with the same comunist (sp?) society how it starts off like a good idea then gets corrupted. I would suggest reading this to others because it gives a new view on things in the comunist party and such.

I thought it wouldn't be, because it was a required reading book, but I loved it! hehe at camp someone made a wooden pig and asked us what to name it, and I said Snowball or Napoleon. No one understood the alliteration, except on of the counselors, so he gave me props for reading (and remembering) the book.

My friend read this and she said this is one of her favorite books. I think it was a society that restricted the people's freedom and one particular person was unhappy about this. I think that was what it was about.

I started it, but never finished. I got the books I had been waiting a year for from the library and never went back to it. Rather interesting with some of the themes he created. Lots are actually around today. Scary.
