Despite the small size of the port town, its local grocery store happens to be quite large in size. Contrary to its slogan, most of the food there is generic or unknown brands, none of which have many acclaim, for good reason. Still, what it lacks in quality it makes up for in sheer quantity. Nearly any food known to man (and several that aren't) can be found on the shelves. There is an in-store bakery, a deli counter, a seafood section, and a cheese section, each of which is located against one wall of the store, in that order. The center is jam-packed with shelves, and located right up front is the speedy (or so they claim) ten-lane checkout.

Despite the popularity of the store, there is always a "Help Wanted" sign in the window.

((Now open to the public! Should anyone wish to use this store for privat RP,just post and I'll change the heading. ^^))

Pushing along a heavily overloaded shopping cart, Pippin keeps his eyes on the rows and rows of cheese. Ohh, Gaia's finest food, and in front of his eyes are endless amounts of it. If the man hadn't kept just an ounce of his sanity, nothing would stop him from buying out the cheese in its entirety. [He certainly has the money to do such an outrageous thing..]

Grinning wildly, he pays no mind to anything in front of him; not that this fact matters, anyway, as the mound of groceries in his cart block the path immediately in front of the cart.

"American, baylough, bleu, brie, cheddar, cheshire, civray, dolcelatte.." murmurs Pippin as his eyes scan the row eye level to him.

It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, all the usual cliches were in full force. Anyone who was alive and had a shred of happiness in them would love to be outside on a day like this.

So why exactly, DS thought yet again, was she stuck in a crowded supermarket?

Not that she particularly minded shopping. But she had just done it yesterday. And the day before. And before that. She had thought that with half of her charges running around on adventures throughout Gaia, she might have a smaller grocery bill, since her worries certainly wouldn't be any less. Clearly, she was wrong.

Sighing, she decided to start at the walls and work her way in. Cheese, that was a house favorite. Good for sandwiches, omelettes, and the classic Mac 'n Cheese casserole. Why not.

"One pound of Sharp Cheddar, please," she asked the attendant behind the counter.

"Feta! Feta is gouda, right Apey?" The man chuckles to himself, and most would pass this off as some sort of psychotic episode during which the lime man talks to himself, if not for the next event. The mass of food nearest the handle rustles, followed by the exposure of the head of a girl, presumably toddler aged, her hair drawn up in pigtails and mouth drawn in an unamused line.

Shaking her head, she stacks boxes behind her in an attempt to make more room for herself, having spent the last few minutes trying to dig an escape. As absentminded as her father gets, she's gotten used to events such as this one.

"Okay, feta's no gouda. We'll just get your usual marble," he responds, scrunching his face comically.

Perking up at the re-mention of cheddar, Pippin leans back on his elbows on the cart's handle, changing his grin's direction. "A fabulous choice," he comments offhand. "Sharp cheddar's one of my favourites, up there with brie and gouda themselves!"

DS instinctively raised an eyebrow at the activity next to her. That was something you didn't see every day. Then again, she could hardy judge, considering what went on at her house. She avoided taking children along shopping after what became known at the store as the "Pisa Incident," which involved an orange, a shopping cart missing one wheel, the missing wheel of said shopping cart, a stacked display of condensed milk cans, and a ladder atop which a storeperson was touching up the sign that advertised the dairy product to the store. It had not been pretty. In fact, it had taken some fancy talking to be able to come back to the store at all after that.

The cheese comment, combined with the memory of the unfortunate accident, cleared the man of all suspicion in DS's book. "I quite agree. Though if you really want something sharp, you'll want to go with a good Jack. Pepper Jack is especially good in burgers."

That sounded good. "Half a pound of Pepper Jack," she added to the order, "and a quarter pound of Manchego, please."

Cheese talk. Nothing could please him more, other than Ciara or theftuous hiests or soap opera television.

April makes a face, her tongue poking out at all the names she, unfortunately, recognizes as cheese. It's very likely that, if she had knowledge of such a thing, she'd wish she was lactose intolerant for that very reason. Instead, she lifts more items to ease the weight against her, stacking items behind her unsuccessfully, as they flow back into the newly created space.

"I'd live off the stuff, if I could help it. I can't quite remember what my wife's favourite is, but she's just as fond of cheese as I am." He beams at this fact, as if proud of this common link. "Though I don't know if the whole food craving thing has scrambled that or not."

What a horrific thought. He'd been thankful to miss out on the sporatic food cravings his pregnant wife might have, but for all he knows she could return tomorrow, or the next day, or next week.. She won't like what she finds, either, what with the legal situations he's dug them deep into.

Shaking away that thought, he quickly fills his head with cheese, the delightful thing. "Hopefully not," he adds, straightening up from his now uncomfortable leaning position.

Ah, so the man was married. With a daughter, and what seemed to be another on the way. Interesting. The girl looked nothing like the man she was conversing with, but children didn't always look like their parents. Perhaps the girl looked more like her mother, or neither. It was possible.

The question of cravings made DS's own stomach lurch. She had to shop for another person, she remembered. The past few times she had forgotten, and had to deal with a pickle-deprived woman. Nasty things. Both the pickles and those who were denied them.

"Hopefully not is right," she finally said, referring to both the man's wife and the woman at home. "Dealing with stuff like that is difficult."

She then looked over the counter. What was taking so long?

April frowns, wiggling her toes against something disturbingly squishy. Hopefully not the marshmallows, and equally so, the salad. She ducks down to find out just what it is, but not before a certain orange turtle frees himself from her coat and headbutts at a nearby yogurt container. April disappears altogether, the food items relieved to fill the space she offers.

"It'd be quite difficult, yes," he says with a frown, temporarily abandoning the cart to join DS's side. "Her name's Ciara, by the way, an' I'm Pippin." Offering his hand, he displays his signature quirky grin in introduction. "D'you have children, too? April's not biological, but the one on the way is.."

Oh yes, true Pippin fashion - being blantently open and honest with someone he's just met. Something Ciara's fixed in him for the sake of their thieving success, but old habits die hard, especially with her gone from his side for a while.

That would explain the difference in looks. Funny she didn't think of it herself. "She's a real cutie," she commented, more to the space the child had been than to the parent. "I have one almost her age at home." What she neglected to mention was that said child was being babysat by someone not much older, and a large, furry creature. But she wasn't worried. Sirius was extremely responsible, Xue was helpful when someone asked him to do something, and Karan wasn't an idiot. Thankfully.

"My name's DS. It's a pleasure to meet you, Pippin-san." Smiling, she took the proferred hand and shook it. "And yes, I do have children. None biological, but that should be changing soon."

Three stacks of cheese, each wrapped in wax paper and sealed with price stickers appeared on the cheese counter, and shortly after disappeared into DS's fresh cart.

"What're you shopping for, anyway? That looks like enough to feed... well, my house." Both eyebrows inched towards her hairline, but her expression was otherwise neutral.

"Really?" Pippin brightens up immediately at the attention to his pride and joy, one currently swimming against the current of the grocery flow. "How'd they get here?"

He pauses, trying to rephrase that. Sounded a tad rude to assume.. "I mean, what with Gaia being such a diverse place for realities and such."

That'll have to do. If he lets himself ramble, there's no way he'll catch up on correcting himself.

Shaking DS' hand, he smiles quite quickly as his thoughts leave him at the mention of not being biological. Saved! "You don't look like you're preggers, or are you early on..?"

.. Back to the drawing board. Without Ciara there to give him a swift kick with her sharp heels, mistakes and comments that could be considered rude just flow out of his mouth freely, escaping before he has the chance to think about what's been said. "Wha- OH! Ohh, all the food, yes, of course." He laughs dryly, coughing to move on. "I'm .. preparing."

That sounds safe enough. Now, don't continue talking ab-

".. See, the house my wife and I own is - get this! - apparently supposed to be condemned." He taps his fingers on the glass of a case displaying small decorative pieces of cheese. "And well, I haven't exactly found a way to save it yet, I'm no good at plans on my own.."

"Er... what?"

It wasn't that DS wasn't paying attention. Really. She was listening very carefully. And eyeing the other cheeses to make sure she wasn't forgetting anything. And mentally going over her shopping list for the umpteenth time. And...

Okay, so multi-tasking was not her strong point.

Taking a deep breath, she attempted to recall the questions and comments. "Yes, Gaia is extremely diverse, one thing I love about it. No, I'm not pregnant, but... a lady friend of mine is. Long story. And there are quite a few children at home normally, so I have to shop frequently."

There, that was almost caught up. Now, what had he said about the house? Something about it condemned and... and...

"Wait, you're going to lose your house?"
PostPosted: Tue May 17, 2005 8:06 pm

"It's.. actually kind of a shop. Kinda."

He bites his lip, pressing on. Mostly this is because he's been bursting to tell someone, even if this someone is a complete stranger and could very well be someone working against him or willing to turn him in. But he takes his chances, liking the risk and trusting his instincts.

"My wife and I live there. It's where April and Petra - her kid - came from. To make a long story short, Gaia can make kids in some pretty weird ways." Rubbing two fingers across his forehead, his eyes moving to the floor, they flick back up to DS' face. Keeping his voice low, he ignores the irritated looks from the employee, the cheese long waiting to be paid for. "I'm organizing a revolt with the guardians to keep our Library protected and secure as is, while keeping its secret from being exposed."

He leans back, trying all too late to look subtle, crossing his hands behind his lower back and straightening up to match. With a second thought, his right hand slips into his pocket, producing the sloppy grocery list.

Flipping it over, he clicks the end of the pen and scratches something on the reverse side, folding it awkwardly before holding it out to DS. "Here. It's the address to the house.. If you drop by sometime, I'm sure I could explain things a lot clearer. We could really use all the help we can get, too!"

Cue cheesy, pleading, yet adorable smile.

A shop. Kinda. Sounded like the sort of explanation she'd give. Intrigued, she put the cheese and the shopping and all residual memories of the "Pisa Incident" out of her mind, devoting it solely to the story that was unfolded.

Occasionally she commented. "You don't have to tell me about strange ways kids show up," for instance. "Have you ever seen one pop out of a rock?"

Eventually everything became about as clear as it could, and she nodded. "Of course. I'd love to do whatever I can to help. That's simply horrible! People wanting to take your house... but we won't let them, no sir!"

Besides, it wasn't as if she had anything better to do.

Lighting up immediately, he drops his hands gently on DS' shoulders, beaming at her as he brings himself directly eye level. There is a slight sparkle in those silver eyes of his. "Thank you. Future Documents thank you. I'll be looking forward to your visit!"

Straightening up as he delivers the last line, he tips down his sunglasses, which, in the heat of the excitement, ended up resting against his small stumpy horns. Smiling at the now irritated cashier, he leans against the table to order himself some cheese.

"I'll take.." he begins to say, waggling his finger through the air at the choices. He starts to continue, but a brief crash of items falling out of his cart startles the words back into him. Whirling around, he catches the last of April shoving items aside to climb back up, clearly disgruntled.

Turning back around, all in the quick action of all his weight on his heel, he delivers the last lines. ".. an assortment worth this much." He slaps down a hundred dollar bill, tapping it with his index finger before raising the opposite one to signal, 'One moment.'

April huffs silently, curling her fingers around Curiosity. As her father joins them, she faintly glares up at him, puffing out her cheeks to emphasize her disapproval.

Pippin clicks his tongue in an apology, softening his expression to match, before swooping down to collect the discarded items in both arms. With slight hesitation as to where to put them down, he balances them on the awkward grocery pile, freeing his hands for navigating the cart. So very good at problem solving, indeed..

DS blinked at the man, then at the scrap of paper in her hand. What exactly had she gotten herself into? And furthermore, how many people was that shopping cart supposed to feed?

"Excuse me, sir." She pushed her cart forward, nearly plowing it through the spilled groceries. "It seems you're in need of assistance now, much less later on. Do you come here often? I would assume not, considering..." A gesture at the spill, or what was left of it, finished her sentence.

Perhaps is wasn't right to judge. Pippin-san seemed like he could handle himself. Almost. But the mention of children had piqued her interest, and moreover her sense of moral duty. The same sense that had quadrupled her house's occupancy in a single year. In addition to that, her cooking drive was in full gear. He may be a cheese expert, but how much did he know about feeding large amounts of people for long periods of time?

"At the very least, allow me to aid you in your shopping today."
