It had been a while since the birthing, yet Chachili's memories of the event were still fresh.
She had since, after giving birth to her fawns, taken them to a protected ditch surrounded by the 'High Grass' and a couple of trees. Here, she'd been able to care for her fawns, and ensure that they were being raised safely.

The fawns, at first, had been weak, floppy little things. They couldn't walk, couldn't stand, and depended on Chachili for just about everything. She often had to find grass for them by herself, and sometimes this meant leaving them alone in the ditch. Each time, she'd pray that a lion or other predator would not sniff them out. She'd been lucky so far... the hole in the ditch remained undiscovered.

One such morning, the adult klipspringer decided to have a bit of a stretch outside. Makuu, the eldest fawn, was napping, and she had a feeling that Kukuru, her second-born, was fast asleep, too. She'd leave their side for a few seconds, and go straight back to them afterwards.

She popped from the ditch, and went to look for some fresh rock plants to take back to her sleeping offspring.

Koin followed the wind. Everything seemed fairly familiar.
It was starting to get funny how the wond kept pushing him in circled.

He sighed. He sniffed the air.

Chachili...

He made his way to where he scented her. She wasn't to far off.

He shook his head and chuckled. He walways ran into her. He thought about the two fawns now. He wondered how old they were now. He padded foreward. Guess he'd find out.

Koin pushed though the grass simply following his nose.

Chachili was usually surprised by Koin's sudden intrusions, but this time she was prepared. She'd scented Koin's familiar scent nearby, and could feel it getting closer and closer.

Ah, Koin's on his way. I don't mind Koin at all.

Chachili, while usually being a little more open-minded when meeting people, had changed since she'd had her fawns. She was much more cautious, and would not readily trust others as easily as she once would have. Her trust was now hard to earn, for her fawns lives were at stake. They were precious things that she needed to protect.

But she didn't mind Koin. He'd be able to see the fawns, no worries. Chachili trusted the wild-dog a lot, and he was one of the few creatures that she had full faith in.

"You're there, aren't you?" she sniffed the wind, and grinned. He was coming closer.

"Around and around I go, where I'll end up, no body knows," he mubbled to himself before pushing through the grass and spotting the ever so familiar Klispringer.

'Hey," he said lightly, knowing he wouldn't scare her. He's popped up a few times before, out of the blue. So he shouldn't ever suprise her again. She knew his scent by now.

Chachili looked up, expectantly.

"Koin!" she grinned, flicking her ear in a kind of 'welcome' of sorts, "I thought you were there. No disguising that scent of yours. I suppose you'd say the same about me!"

Carefully, she looked around and spotted a rock plant nearby. However, it was in the open... and area where leopards and lions and other predators would see her if she ventured out. She wondered if it was worth getting it... she might need to walk a little further to find another, and she was so tired that she decided it was worth taking the risk.

"I'm just going to be one second," she nodded, trotting cautiously over towards the dangerous section of open land, "I'm thinking of getting that rock plant over there. I'll just be quick..."

She looked to see if the coast was clear, then put one hoof forward.

"No leopards about, I hope..."

Living was always a struggle when you were a walking dinner.

Koin chuckled. "Can't hide from you, can I?" he said.

He nodded as she cautiously made her her way to the rock plant. She's been more careful since the fawn. There was a good reason for that. He was ready, just incase something wanted to endanger his friend or her fawns.

"No, you can't," Chachili replied with a smug grin. In spite of being more protective and cautious, she was still her old, selfish, smug and ignorant self. There was no doubt that Chachili was a bit of a pain in the neck at times, but she was someone to talk to, and someone who apprechiated things and that could have been one of her only 'personality pluses'.

She looked both ways, like one would look before crossing a busy street, searching for any signs of nearby predators. Nothing that she could see.
She stepped forward, slowly, carefully, not making a sound...

BOOOM!

Chachili was instantly bowled over by something half her size, and insantly stumbled and lost her footing. She crashed into the dust.

"Wha... what was?..." then she looked down, and saw who was responsible for her fall.

Kukuru. What was he doing out of the ditch? Chachili felt anger rise, and instantly started to panic. If Kukuru had followed her out here... that meant that Makuu was alone!

"Uh... sorry you fall, mummy," the fawn said, excitedly, "I surprise you, though! I gotcha' right on the bum!... heeey, who's that?!"

The little, silvery grey fawn turned to look at Koin. He'd never seen a wild-dog before, and was naturally curious.

"Are you kind of... monster?" he asked, giving his small, stumpy tail a bit of a wag. Kukuru was still young, and he wasn't yet capable of intelligent conversations, so he talked in very strange, broken English.

Before Koin could reply, however, Chachili cuffed Kukuru on the head, then grabbed hold of his ear in her mouth. And twisted.

Kukuru yowled.

"That's what you get for leaving your brother behind," Chachili growled, scornfully, "And for sneaking up on me like that."

Embarassed, Chachili wondered what Koin would think. She still wasn't really cut out for this 'mothering' thing.

He shook his head. Obviously she learned to use her nose rather well after their first meeting.

Koin chucked as Chachili fell. It was certainly unexpected. He saw a light gray fawn that head had watched the birthing of a while ago. He quited once Chachi started to panic.

Calm as ever, Koin was. He shook his head with a light chuckled as he received his punisment. Chachili was right that the fawn shouldn't have wandered away from his sibling.

Chachili sighed, then let her fawn go. Kukuru stumbled back, and whined a little.

"Ooooow..." he groaned, rubbing his sore ear with a hoof, then looking up at Koin, "Didja' see that? Mummy attacked me! 'Snot fair!"

Chachili rolled her eyes, then looked to Koin.

"Sorry about that," she grunted, then nudged her little one with her muzzle, "Here, I'd better introduce you. This is Kukuru, my second-born. You've met before... well, you've seen eachother before. At least, you've seen Kukuru!"

She smiled, eyes shimmering. She remembered that moment. Koin had looked over her while she'd rested with the fawns. Chachili really owed Koin. But what could she give him in return?

'I'm just prey,' she thought, a little sadly, 'What can I do?'

She strengthened, as Kukuru walked slowly up to Koin, touching his muzzle with his nose.

"You're big," Kukuru pointed out, "Very big."

"Its completely fair young one," he said to the fawn. "You have to learn."

He nodded at her apoligy. "Yeah, I've seen him," he said with another swift nod. He was at the fawns birth. Him and a lioness.

Leboya...

It was also the second time Koin watched over his friend as she slept. And he'd watch her sleep again if he ever had to.

He blinked as the fawn touched his maw lightly. Those same words had beeen said to him before, by a little wild dog pup. "I'm supposed to be bigger than you..." he replied with a light chuckle.

Kukuru pouted, moved away from Koin, and Chachili nudged him forward.

"You left Makuu by himself in the ditch... you even risked your life following me here. A predator could have seen you and snatched you away, and in the blink of an eye you'd be gone!" Chachili's voice was laced with scorn, and Kukuru winced.

"Sorry..." he looked down at the ground, and then looked up as Koin replied to his statement. Supposed to be bigger? The fawn's eyes widened.

"Are you some kind of warrior, Koin?" he asked, childishly. Chachili rolled her eyes and sighed.

"He's a bit of an air-head, Koin," she chuckled, looking at him, "Someday you'll have pups, too, right? You'll know then."

Koin watched the fawn as he pouted. Chachili scolded him again.

"Me? A warrior...?" he wasn't cut out to be a warrior. "I'm just a wanderer," he replied to the young Klips.

He chuckled lightly as Chachili called her fawn an airhead.

"Pups?" he questioned. "I wouldn't be a good father," he said.

"A... wanderer?..." Kukuru's shoulders slumped, "Oh..."

He straightened, his eyes suddenly shining with new light.

"But thass' something in itself, righ', Mr Koin? Visitin' places. Goin' somewhere... haha!"

Chachili sighed, and shuffled Kukuru forward again. Kukuru was so young, yet sometimes he talked about things that weren't for his age group to talk about. Luckily, Kukuru wouldn't remember these things when he grew older. He was too young to remember these days.

"Time to go back to the ditch," she growled, nipping his ear and hoping that Makuu was alright, "I should introduce you to my first-born, Koin. Makuu's a fine young fawn, unlike this one."

Kukuru gave a baby-ish grin, then ran behind Koin, trailing after him like a loyal puppy would follow it's master.

Chachili's ears twitched as Koin talked, but she didn't look back at him. Instead, she trotted forward towards the hidden ditch.

"That's not true. You'd make a fine father, Koin. Once you have pups, tell me, alright?"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 19, 2006 11:39 pm

Koin blinked. The young Klips emotion changed fast. He shook his head.

Koin nodded as he walked next to Chachili. He glanced back at Kukuru and chuckled lightly.

"Alright," Koin replied. "It's not like I can hide anything from you anyhow. Even if I didn't tell you, you would most likely find out on your own."

Chachili nodded.

"Yeah... since we know eachother's scents well enough, by now," she gave a brisk nod, and yawned, "Hmm... the sun's climbing higher today, yet it's cooler than usual. We're nearing the ditch, now..."

Her stomach dropped as a screech came from nearby. Kukuru!
She whirled around, seeing the fawn run towards her, frightened, as a leopard-like animal emerged from the bushes, eyes flashing.

"And you've lead me straight to your fawns," the leopard grinned sadistically.

Chachili's heart pounded, and she stumbled backwards. She looked at Koin, alarmed. A predator... after her fawns!

"Get behind me, Kukuru!"
