The episode of Degrassi: The Next Generation in which a character has an abortion just aired. In America.

The episode was banned here in the States. In this episode, the main plot is the pregnancy of a fourteen-year-old girl, Manny Santos (who is a regular character on the show). She decides to have an abortion, even though her best friend and the father vehemently disagree. Many things over the course of the show (including another character telling the entire cafeteria about the pregnancy, Manny telling her mom even though she's afraid that she'll be sent to a convent, and people constantly telling her about how stupid she is) happen to her, culminating in her decision.

To be honest, I'm thrilled. For once, the A-word isn't just skirted. I'm even more pleased that The N, which airs episodes of the Canadian T.V. show in America, decided to air it.

I found one quote especially striking, from a woman (the mother of Manny's best friend) who found herself pregnant and raising a child in her teenage years: "All of my friends were going to college, university, Europe... I stayed home."

They finally aired it?! 4laugh I always wondered why it wasn't aired when othere things were, like, say, Liberty's pregnancy. Didn't seem right. If only we still had digital cable...

I like Manny. She's "slutty", but at least she isn't afraid of making mistakes.

Yeah! I was so shocked! I'm like "OMG THIS IS IT!!!!" And they probably had no problem with Liberty's pregnancy because of A. she's doing the "right thing" and 2. Liberty and JT are a bit older than Manny was.

I don't like the direction her character's been taking. She cries too much, and has steadily been reminding me more and more of a human wound (messy friendship...).

Degrassi is a guilty pleasure of mine. It really does take on a lot of complicated issues.

I forgot it's Friday, so I can't believe I'm missing the Every Episode Ever marathon. But I think it's re-running at midnight; it doesn't say the episode name, but it says that Manny has to make a tough choice, so that's probably it.

Gasp! They're showing someone choosing to have an abortion! In America, nontheless!
I was pissed off when they showed Liberty getting pregnant and keeping the thing (in spite of it pretty much ruining her life, from what I've seen), and now, it's a pleasant suprise that they're showing Manny have an abortion.

Sorry if I'm incorrect. I haven't seen the show in a long while. sweatdrop

I liked that Liberty's baby was taken away. It showed all those brainwashed, pro-life kids that adoption isn't that ******** easy.

---

I'm suprised the plot with Paige being raped only lasted a precious few episodes. It was a big topic, and it should've been in there a few more times.

I mean, Ellie's cutting lasted like 12 episodes.

They banned it in the US? Why?

Restriction of freedom of speech, though. There's no justifiable reason to ban it - discriminatory to a race/group really is the only justifiable reason - and whatever mandated that it is baned should receive a hefty penalty.

No, you're not. I detest the show seeing as it seems like an angst/emo-fest.

I felt the same way after seeing an episode, then watching the thing about the girl being raped. It didn't feel real at all. I understand they can't put an extremely wide variety of emotions in it, because of the way parents will react (******** morons), but I dind't feel for any of the characters, and the acting was dull.

WEll actually I found the first posts not that bad...we had a few ignorant idiots, but other than that we were well represented....maybe I'm reading the wrong part of it...lemme go back..no i really didn't see anything too disturbing other than hating someone for having an abortion...that's just stupid..

It seems that there are a few pro-punishment people there, because one's all "she took the easy way out." Another said "if she can make a baby she can take care of one." ******** idiots...they don't know how expensive it is to give birth, get prenateal care, and care for a child. It's not stuff you can do without, in this day and age, a university degree.

Then there's all these other people villifying the character and calling her evil. It's sick, and to believe that there are people who call existing people evil and s**t for aborting...

They're older? Geez, shows how much I pay attention.

Really? Haven't been following the show recently, so I couldn't tell.

And everyone else: yes, it's an emo/angst fest, but it's such fun to watch. Besides, it's about teenagers, so the angst-factor is actually pretty accurate.
