Main Combat championship
Tournament organisation
For this tournament, the system used in previous championships was drastically changed in order to ensure the better survival of the event.
First, battles will not be fought at a specific given time and day. No-shows being abhorrently frequent, battle threads will be posted in the Cyberdome and contenders will be able to post for about a week before the thread is locked (obviously once the battle is over).
Battles
The main interest in fighting inside the dome is that it can alter any of its participants to make a completely different combat.
For example, a fight between Mystique and Captain America would usually be a morph and shield fest (which could be really interesting nervertheless), but in order to better compensate for the obvious power gaps their can be between characters and to make a little change from RPing the same character over and over again, the dome will add an interesting twist to mix.
For every fight, a writer (chosen from our helpers or outside) will be given a theme from which he will have to define the characters and the setting the players will compete in. To get a better idea, they will write what is the equivalent of the first page of any comic book (the fourth wall I think they call it?) and provide a background for the characters and breifly go back on the events that lead up to the present situation.
For example, if the setting was a pirate ship fight. Raven Darkholme would be the Captain of a contreband ship called the Mystique, trying to pillage a U.S. navy vessel called The Patriot under the orders of none other than the famous Steven Rogers. In this setting, raven could obviously not shape shift (even thgough Cap would probably have a shield) but the battle would start in a naval battle and end in a swashbuckling epic battle!
Their will be two types of battles: singles an teams
Single battles will be classic one on one, nothing much more to explain that will not be covered by this post. Team battles will have the same basic principle as the single ones except that teams of players will be pitted against the others instead of individuals. This potentially creating more confusion for posting, a strict predetermined order will have to be respected by the fighters as they fight. The size of the teams will depend on the number of participants that sign up for the tournament.
Battle specifications
In opposition to the previous tournament, only classic "comic like" combats will be allowed. The problem with the prose, or "novel like", style being that not all can be as gifted with the pen as others, while not meaning they cannot be as imaginative and original for fighting maneuvers (yours truly's first language not even being English for example...). Also, Kapow! is first and foremost a comic book RP guild and it is what the Championship should rightfully reflect.
This means that you have to keep in mind that everything you write in a post should be able to be contained in a comic panel (because it just might wink ).
Example:
Cap: *Hurls his shield with all his might*
Bane: *Barely dodges the discus* You'll have to do better than that wing head!
Cap: *Watches his shield turn around in mid-air and returning towards the goliath* You don't know how many times I've heard this one son...
Bane: *Gets the full impact of the throw behind the head* Ooomph!
Example of what not to do:
Cap: Looking at the artificially powered behemoth the patriot uses all of his might and determination to hurl the metal discus slightly off his target, knowing full well the hit will not be when his opponent would have expected it.
Bane: Seeing his ridiculous rival throwing a piece of scrap metal at him he starts dodging and feels the wind behind the projectile as it barely misses him..
Keep in mind this method is not less interesting or fun to RP (at least for most) but it simply isn't the focus of this particular tournament.
Outside participants
They will still be allowed as long as they do not interfere significantly with the main battle. Their usefulness will mostly be in setting an ambiance for the fight more than influence it.
Example:
Bucky: *Grabs a Nazi officer and projects him onto an incoming firing squad* Did you see that Cap?!
Example of what not to do:
Bucky: *Takes a leap towards Captain Nazi and kicks him in the jaw* Don't worry Cap the two of us can take him!
Cyberdome AIs
AIs are the software of the very Cyberdome itself, which means they regulate the environnement. Any intervention by the AI must be taken into consideration by the fighters.
If the AI should post at the same time as one of the combattants, and should the two posts go in conflict, the fighter will have to edit his post to conform to the AI before the fight continues. It goes without saying that his opponent who will surely realize it will have to wait for the two posts to be "synched", in a manner of speaking, before he posts his next move.
Voting
Voting system
This is where to most important changes had to be made, and the most difficult ones to think of. Also keep in mind that these rules are subject to change (not without notification of course) depending on the number of participants that sign up and the un predictable events that can prove this technique non effective.
First, votes will not be cast for individuals but for battle during the first part of the tournament, this putting the focus on synergy between the opponents rather than competition, making for better shows and reads. The winning pairs of the first round will move on to the second and change opponents. Winners of the second will move on the third and so on until the final, when champions will be crowned (yes there will be two).
For team battles, the same principle applies except for the fact that teams stay the same, the teams will change opposing teams but their members will remain the same throughout the championship.
Voting criterias
Obviously, creativity, originality and anything that can make a battle interesting to read will have to be taken into serious consideration to determine winners.
BUT, even though characters will be altered when fighting each other in the Dome, they still have to be in large part true to their respective personalities. This is also something that will have to be kept in mind by voters as they make their decison.
A thread will be made for voting for each round but, even though the thread will be public on both voting and comments, it will be strictly forbidden to explain your vote may it be by praising the ones you voted for or exlplaining why you didn't vote for the other!
Secondary Events
Both secondary events will have to take place once the battles are done, all the way to the finals.
Art contest
This championship will basically consist in taking any moment from any fight that has happened during the championship and draw a page that could go in a comic book that would depict this battle. The page can be a full page spectacular scene or a multi panel series of event with the thought squares (thought bubble seem to be out these days) and speech bubbles.
All entries will have to be posted to the AI who will then create a thread where people will be able to gaze at them with awe and vote for their favorite.
Avatar edit contest
The basis of this event being similar to the art contest, participants will have to make an edit of any of the characters that participated in any of the battles in their setting.
Know that technique will be but one of the many aspects that will be asked to be taken into consideration by the voters. The characters having never been drawn by any professional artists, the whole look will be completely at the artist's discression. The originality of the costume, the concept, the whole idea basically is the most important factor for this contest. This means that this event is open to both more advanced and beginning avatar editors!
If you have a good idea for a concept but don't have photoshop or any other program required to make an edit, you can always ask other editors for help with the colors (the help will of course have to be mentionned though, with no penalty on the voting). I for one would gladly agree to color the edit someone would have the done the pencils on and would need help with.
Voting will take place as was explained for the art contest.
SO, I guess that finally covers it! If you have any question on the tournament, post them here and I will update the rules if necessary.
Now is the time for the official sign up!
Don't forget, if you have different mules you can enter single combats as one and team as the other, it is your choice!
