almost two months ago i went on gaia and put up a post on the Why Not guild where i talked about how i was desperate to lose weight because i'm overweight at 180lbs (i'm 5'7, female, fourteen). i received a lot of support and advice from people and the first week of my diet went great, i lost almost 4 pounds. since then i've fallen off the wagon and gone back to my old habits and gained all the weight back. i was at irish college recently and lost weight naturally, but ever since i got back 2 days ago i've started eating and eating again and i know i'm going to gain all the weight back. i want to be slim so i feel better about my appearance and self esteem, but also because of my health concerns. please help me, i can't motivate myself or gather any willpower to reach my goals and i need advice. i don't know how to start and stay motivated. i know it won't be easy, but i'm desperate. i'm unhappy with myself and my excess fat so help me please.

Don't starve yourself. That's why diets fail. What you need to do is be a little active and cut out the unnecessary junk you may be eating.

Stop drinking soda! Just by doing that you can lose a lot of weight over time because of all the sugar, caffiene, and empty calories.

Stop eating things out of the vending machine. Crap like chips, candy bars, or anything else you may find in there are not good for you. They are high in sodium and more empty calories.

Try to cook your own meals instead. Not microwavable foods but actual cooking. Frozen dinners are also very high in sodium and fats. You can eat good stuff but only if its homemade.

Exercise is also key but what exersices to do affect whether you want to continue or not. Swimming is by far the best workout anyone can ever do. Not sitting in the pool but swimming laps. It works out just about every muscle on your body. Its cooler and more refreshing. You won't burnout easily like you would at trying to run a mile (or three). Its a lot more fun and you will shed the extra pounds you don't want.

Eating salads can also help along the weight-loss but what goes in makes a difference. Dressings that are made with egg (like mayo, ranch, thousand island, etc) are fatty and have empty calories. Vinegrette dressings like olive oil are much healthier for you. Chef's salads are also good too because you get a little more variety in your foods without all the fattiness.

eek WOW, thats the same thing my counsler has been telling me for just about a year. My parents are fighting with me to eat. I hate eatting. They tell me i need to eat 6 small meals a day. I just dont know. I am fighting with wishing i was skinnier, and people tell me I am fine just the way i am, but i dont believe them. I drink soda because of the caffiene, because im ADHD. Also I am bipolar so it doesnt really help me....

As for now, I guess I can tell you what the doctors tell me. 6 small meals a day. 5 veggies./fruit (most imporant) And if your state insurance is anythin g like mine they pay for programs like weightwatchers and stuff like that.
Home cooked meals are better for you yes, better baked and not fried(because of all the fat) mayo is a fatty food, cheese can be to depending on how much you eat. Dont load everything with salt, or butter because that dont help much either.
Salads are good for you also. I without alot of dressing(because some are fatty because of things that they are made from.)

I hope i helped a little! confused

Well, since everyone's told you 'bout food, I'll tell you about exercise.

Taekwondo or some other kind of martial art (even kickboxing works) is really great for burning body fat all over because it works all the muscles out, if not during the exercise, than during the stretching. Just going to class once a week for two months helped me get rid of a slight tummy bulge I had; although this time, I'm probably going three times a week. It's also awesome for building up muscle and making you more limber, because you do a lot of stretching.

If you volunteer at a hospital, pushing people back and forth to therapy, it's also great exercise and will help you get community service hours, and it looks good on your resume.

I need to start taekwondo again; being away at writing school and eating out in the city every night has made me gain some weight.

Well here this might help. I've been wanting to lose weight for so love but i could never stop eating junk foods or get my self to exercise enough. So, at my house we don't buy much junk food. We make it unavailable so we do eat healthier. So all you have to do sometimes is exercise about 15 minutes twice a day. (crunches running in place biking) and cut down on the junk food. And if that doesn't work, there is a patch out there for kids to help them loose weight i almost got it buit i decided not to. (not enough money) They told me you didn't have to change your diet really, but i would help. But yeah, cut down on foods and workout a bit.

cut down on the bad stuff, eat smaller portions and eat right, whichwas explained a lot above and...exercise. ride a bike, swim, run, jog. play soccer, oh! and i think stress and lack of sleep can also make you put on weight for some people...

Don't push yourself! And never ever starve yourself. If you exercise at least 15 minutes and gradually make it longer you'll have results in around 2 months, with healthy food choices. Believe me! It works.

Oh goodness.. I don't know if you're still having that problem but dieting is the worst possible thing you can do for yourself. It increases your risk of having heart attacks if you go from diet to diet. What you need to do is change your life style. Limit your intake of unhealthy foods and avoid eating after 7 or 8 pm. Think of something you like to do that would be a good workout. For me it's dancing and swimming. Work it into your schedule.

You can also get a self-help book to help you with it. Dr. Phil as well as his son have made two books entitled "The Ultimate Weight Solution." His son's book is (I think) aimed more at teenagers than his father's. I actually read that book and loved it. Maybe you would enjoy it too. Take care!

There are two parts to a healthy diet.
Eat less and exercise.

The best attitude to have in this situation is to want to change your lifestyle rather than diet for a while then go back to normal, because that won't work. To lose weight it isn't so much a case of "eat less" it's "watch what you eat".

There is nothing wrong with eating a lot so long as you know what's in it and know how much of something you are putting into your body in any one day. For a female on a calorie controlled diet the guidelines are:

Breakfast - 300 cals
Lunch - 400 cals
Dinner - 700 cals
Snacks - 2 @ <100 cals

Also, check the fat content of food. If something contains more than 10g of fat per 100g, or 5g saturated fat per 100g, don't eat it! Try using sweet fruits to avoid eating junk food and candy, for example pineapple.

Another good technique is to keep yourself busy. Start a time-consuming hobby that will fill up a large amount of your spare time and get yourself an active job. If you're feeling down or stressed out, talk to someone about it, so that you don't end up comfort eating.

Try to excercise for at least an hour a day. It sounds like a lot to begin with but it will get easier the more you keep it up, and after a while you will enjoy doing it as the excercise causes the release of endorphins - happy hormones! ^^

Good luck! I'm trying to lose some weight too, so if you ever need advice or support feel free to PM me!

And just remember - it' won't happen over night! It will take a while but it will be worth it!

Well, first of all I don't think you would need to loose to much weight. I'm 180 at 5' 3", and I don't think I look THAT bad xp
Eating less is good, but only if you overeat now and eat many unhealthy foods. Find a fun way to keep active. I just got DDR, and THAT is fun, my friend!! I think anyone will enjoy it, to be honest. If I did, anyone will
*cough* SOrry about that there, but yeah. Keeping busy is good, too!
Even if it's not physical activity, staying distracted from food tends to help. Not much to say other than no one can really help you except yourself on this. You can only looose weight if you REALLY want to.
I wanted to, but really it was only becaues I thought I might like being skinny. I didn't really care, so nothing happened.
Good luck to ya, though!

i've always found the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to just speed up your metabolic rate. Why don't you try looking for a sport or activity that you really like and throwing yourself into it.
