This year for social studies I'm going to study Civics. My tecaher told us that our first project was to decorate our binder with a theme realted to civics, on the back I chose to put the U.S. Constitution with the statue of liberty and and the U.S. flag as a watermark but for the front I chose to put flags that represent a minority with the words "______ rights" the blanc is where you inpute the minority's name. I chose to do three, the first is African American Rights, the second Immigrant Rights, and last I put Gay Rights. The problem comes in when I show it to my mom, she acted a little histerical but not in a bad way. She was worried that if I put that on my binder people at my school would start calling me gay and things like that so she insisted and insisted that I change it but I said "Its a free country and I have the right to do anything and say anything with out fear of being hurt" she said "Ok do whatever you want but don't come crying to me when people start calling you things" then when she was talking with my father on the phone she told him and before she changed the subject she said well if he's gay its going to be he who's going to get hurt and riddiculed. So what should I do Change the the gay rights flag for something else and loose the risk of discrimination and name calling or leave it alone and hope for the best.
Please change this if it's on the wrong forum.
EDIT: I'm going to change it for the time being but I will decide what to do after I hear what you guys have to say.

I don't want you to sacrifice your self esteem, and if it makes you feel uncomfortable you shouldn't do it. In your position I wouldn't change it, but if you are really worried about it, do what makes you more comfortable.

I say if you want to keep it then good! That just shows your parents that you're going to fight for what you believe in.
But if you want to take it off then that's your desicion too. Just make sure it's what you want, and not what your parents or everyone else wants. whee

Well I want to keep it on to show my support but I don't want to be ridiculed at leats not this early when I'm not ready. For the moment it is behind the second one I did and tomorrow I'll show my friend (she's the one that supports gay marrige and rights) and see what she thinks. Thanks for the advice I'll take it into consideration.

Um well are you gay? if not the major props to you! uh if it were me i would't have put it on there becase im closeted and i don't want people to know (heance the closet...its kinda dark in here eek *scared* ) but if your not and comfertable(sp?) enough with your sexuality then by all means keep it on, and calling some one gay is sexual herassment(sp?) and students can get suspened for that, so keep it on and if some one calls you gay go to an administrater explain the situation and your all good.

I don't want people to know this early I'm not prepared enough. If I was straight it would be a whole different thing because I would have a gf to prove my sexuality or do something of that sort but I'm not.

Before this is locked, I'm gonna come out and say that I think it was an overreaction...maybe it's just because I'm a girl and I'm in a relatively cut-off part of the country, but I've never heard of a guy being thought gay for something on a binder....
