Character info
Name: Tristan Derskald Nationality: Canadian Age: 22 Height: 6'1" Weight: 58kg Place of Birth: Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario, Canada Resident before going to the island: Rented single room Birthdate: December 13, 1983 Hair: long, stringy/wispy, Black, normally pulled back. Eyes: Dark turquoise, shortsighted Build: very light (Former) Occupation: Writer/ chemistry student Likes: Books (especially fantasy, surrealist, lovecraftian horror, sci-fi andadventure), pyrotechnics, sketching, architecture, sculpture, chemistry, writing, strange, mysterious and haunting things, eclectic music. Dislikes: really loud noises, really large crouds, being unable to do anything or make any progress on whatever his current mini project is, really hot days.
Background: Section currently being revamped Tristan had a fairly average upbringing as the older of two children of a local history professor and geologist. Brought up in Niagara on the Lake, he spent a great deal of time with his father in and about the historic forts scattered about the peninsula. Fascinated by the various stories surrounding the forts, he began to write some of his own, which eventually grew into a desire to write professionally.
His interest in the strange and disturbing was sparked after hearing many of the stories about the old forts and later intensified after discovering an old collection of lovecraftian short stories.
Personality: Tristan is generally a quiet, bright, observant fellow who continiously carries a spark of mischief in his eyes. He is quietly amused by the entire world and most everything in it. He seems to approach the world as though there's some huge cosmic joke going on that only he can understand, finding amusment in even some of the most unfortunate occurances.
Although at times he has difficulty telling the difference between reality and fiction/ his own highly active imagination he seems relativly normal. Well, at least untill you get him going about his writing, where he then describes some of the bizzare and sometimes disturbing ideas he has.
In essence he is an eccentric, someone who is so into what he does that it influences most everything in his life, even to the point of distorting his view of the world and reality. At the same time he is also very curious as to how things work and interact with each other, observing all that he can.
When it comes to personal realtions, Tristan is almost completely oblivious. Its not that he doesnt know about them, its simply that mentally he never even considers them a possibility for him, concerning himself more with his stories and creations than the possibility of any relations beyond those that might be displayed by a sibling or uncle.
Skills: skilled at organic chemistry, novel/ short story writing, to a lesser extent sculpting and landscape/ architectural drawing. Speaks fluent english.
Clothes: Some t-shirts, a vest (with lots of pockets), Kakies, a pair of hiking boots, some shorts, glasses (for his shortsightedness) and a greatcoat.
Stuff Tristan has brought to the island: *A number of books, including reference material on chemistry, writing and other arts as well as many of his favorite novels (such as a complete collection of sherlock holmes, a number of books by DeLint and Lovecraft) *A trio of well used sketchbooks *Various small tools and materials for sculpting *An old battered leather Tricorn *A aging laptop with a high capacity exernal hard drive *A pair of thick notebooks for his writings *Some changes of clothes (3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, underwear, beret, socks, shoes, sandles, stained labcoat and a grey fleece sweater) *basic hygene kit *Pencils and pens for writing and drawing *hiking backpack
Possible reasons for Tristan being on the island: After a lab accident while working for one of the lab's subsiduaries Tristan recieved horrible chemical burns to a large portion of his body. His supervisor, knowing of the existance of some experimental medical facities owned by the labs and seeing potential in Tristan passed his name up the chain of command. He is shipped off to a nearby hospital run by Feral Labs where he is stabilized and then shipped off to the island under the premises of further, specilized treatment for his injuries. Those who knew him on the mainland are told he died en route.

About the Pangolin "The tree pangolin (Manis tricuspis) is found in secondary forests and is native to most of mainland and insular Southeast Asia, China, Taiwan, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka but Manis tricuspis is known in Africa only from Senegal to western Kenya, and southern Africa to Zambia. Female pangolin territories are solitary and small, less than 10 acres (40,000 m²), and they rarely overlap. Males have larger territories, up to 60 acres (200,000 m²), which overlap many female territories resulting in male/female meetings. These meetings are brief unless the female is in breeding condition. Pangolins create burrows in the ant or termite hills they previously vacated and tree pangolins often sleep in the trees. The two smaller pangolin species that live in trees within rainforests curl up to sleep in the fork of a branch or lie among the plants. Tree pangolins eat insects such as ants and termites from their nests, or the armies of insects moving on the trees. They rely on their thick skin for protection, and dig into burrows with their long, clawed forefeet. They eat between 5 and 7 ounces (150 to 200 g) of insects a day. Pangolins use their 10 to 27 inch (250 to 700 mm) tongue which is coated with gummy mucus to funnel the insects into their mouth. The tongue is actually sheathed in the chest cavity all the way to the pelvic area. The tree pangolin has many adaptations. When threatened they roll up into a ball, protecting themselves with their thick skin and scales. Their scales cover their entire body except for the belly, snout, eyes, ears, and undersides of the limbs. When a mother with young is threatened it rolls up around the young which also rolls into a ball. While in a ball they can extend their scales and make a cutting action by using muscles to move the scales back and forth. They make an aggressive huff noise when threatened but that is the extent of their noise making. They can walk on all fours or on their hind legs using their prehensile tails for balance. Tree pangolins can climb up their own tail in the absence of branches and their long tails actually set a record for vertebrae in mammals, up to 47 vertebrae in some species. When walking on all fours it walks on its front knuckles with its claws tucked underneath in order to protect them from wearing down. Their a**l scent glands disperse a foul secretion much like a skunk when threatened. They have well developed scent, but as a nocturnal animal they have poor eye sight. Instead of teeth they have a gizzard-like stomach full of stones and sand they ingest. African tree pangolins fill their stomachs with air before entering water to aid in buoyancy for well developed swimming." information quoted from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_Pangolin

The Pangolin is a very interesting idea, and there are no major flaws in your concept. My only thought was to maybe expand a bit more on the history... what defines your character, what makes them who they are, etc?

hm..I honestly don't know what I can tell you to help you give your charrie more of a chance to get on the island. I don't really think he's too extreme, but he's not too boring, either...and the animal is unique, so in general you have a good concept going.
Perhaps develop his personality a bit more? or at least write more on it?

Thanks a Million! You're absolutely right about those changes...I'm definately going to have to beef up his personality and background descriptions. Heh....as for why I chose a pangolin, I think it was probably because he's supposed to be such an odd person, without actually having anything medically wrong with him (well, aside from those chemical burns.) I figured that it sort've fit, seeing as a pangolin is such an odd offshoot of an otherwise normal animal, an ant-eater. Plus, in a way, the pangolin has an armored hide, as opposed to his own flesh, which has had much of the protective layers burned off (ie. skin)
As for the chemicals that caused the burns, I actually had in mind it being a concotion of various chemicals. The main one though was Hydroflouric acid, which is not only a really nasty corrosive, but also devestates calcium levels in the body (ie. it eats bones, and cripples any calcium dependant chemical reactions in the body) As for coverage, I was thinking something along the lines of his upper arms (which he used to protect his face), a large portion of his torso (mostly on the front) and about the upper 3/4 of his legs.
I would probably also add in some other, slow acting chemicals which cause his body to deteriorate, or perhaps even something as simple as a high concentration Nickel Nitarte solution, a carcinogen. To make it so he can actually walk about, I think I'd probably have it so at least at first he's stuck with a bunch of braces for his body, so that he doesnt break any of his weakened bones from everyday activity.
One last thing (at least for the moment ;D) is that the whole ordeal would probably cause his whole temperment to gain a bit of a grim element, whereas after his first change he might become ratehr attached to the idea that whatever doesnt kill you makes you stronger.

Chi men Ryu See! I read the Critique that do billy, You character is not bad, don't worry about the fact that is similary to Lucas. Is the esteriotype of the scientis, Search for the absolute true, discover the mistery of the world. We shall see, Billy wrote the critique before I was able to make the note about the possible simularity. Still, here's hoping that things will work out. Also, BTW. From what I've read, your quest looks pretty good *I'll will have to finish reading it over once I finish writing this report I'm workingon*

Don't worry about the similarity between both character ever exist, Is true that every person in the world is different, but in a world with billions and billions of people doesn't exist both person with the same personality.
Remember, Similary =/= same.
Hope to cheer you.
