Grip of Death

Haha, this is going to be... SO MUCH EASIER! twisted

Let's make a comprehensive list together on the factual, logical, reasonable reasons on why NOT to have children. Scholarly, peer-reviewed sources are the most welcome, but if you have nothing on hand, just have a spin at it!

Once we develop the list, we can move the topic to the library of logic and use it as a relevant source.

What do ya say?

Ok, I'll start off this one...

Please, by the way, list each one clearly. Don't make a convoluted paragraph listing several reasons at once, that just makes things confusing. Kind of model it like the "101 reasons to have a child" webpage, except we back up points with facts.

- With each pregnancy that occurs, calcium get leeched off of the woman's body. (Osteoporosis is a prevalent problem in older women).

Does "kids are a pain in the a**" count?

Does "kids are a pain in the a**" count?

In my book, it would be the end all, be all reason. xd

(but let's try to steer away from sarcasm, and relate to factual, scientific data instead).

Children cost, on average, millions of dollars per year. Having more than two is more expensive than buying a few houses, a yacht or two, and a couple of cars.

I found this link - maybe it will help.
http://www.gate.net/~liz/liz/004.htm

Quote:
These are the normal, expectable, or frequent PERMANENT side effects of pregnancy:

-- stretch marks (worse in younger women)
-- loose skin
-- permanent weight gain or redistribution
-- abdominal and vaginal muscle weakness
-- pelvic floor disorder (occurring in as many as 35% of middle-aged former child-bearers and 50% of elderly former child-bearers, associated with urinary and rectal incontinence, discomfort and reduced quality of life)
-- changes to breasts
-- varicose veins
-- scarring from episiotomy or c-section
-- other permanent aesthetic changes to the body (all of these are downplayed by women, because the culture values youth and beauty)
-- increased proclivity for hemmorhoids
-- loss of dental and bone calcium (cavities and osteoporosis)

These are the occasional complications and side effects:

-- hyperemesis gravidarum
-- temporary and permanent injury to back
-- severe scarring requiring later surgery (especially after additional pregnancies)
-- dropped (prolapsed) uterus (especially after additional pregnancies, and other pelvic floor weaknesses -- 11% of women, including cystocele, rectocele, and enterocele)
-- pre-eclampsia (edema and hypertension, the most common complication of pregnancy, associated with eclampsia, and affecting 7 - 10% of pregnancies)
-- eclampsia (convulsions, coma during pregnancy or labor, high risk of death)
-- gestational diabetes
-- placenta previa
-- anemia (which can be life-threatening)
-- thrombocytopenic purpura
-- severe cramping
-- embolism (blood clots)
-- medical disability requiring full bed rest (frequently ordered during part of many pregnancies varying from days to months for health of either mother or baby)
-- diastasis recti, also torn abdominal muscles
-- mitral valve stenosis (most common cardiac complication)
-- serious infection and disease (e.g. increased risk of tuberculosis)
-- hormonal imbalance
-- ectopic pregnancy (risk of death)
-- broken bones (ribcage, "tail bone")
-- hemorrhage and
-- numerous other complications of delivery
-- refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease
-- aggravation of pre-pregnancy diseases and conditions (e.g. epilepsy is present in .5% of pregnant women, and the pregnancy alters drug metabolism and treatment prospects all the while it increases the number and frequency of seizures)
-- severe post-partum depression and psychosis
-- research now indicates a possible link between ovarian cancer and female fertility treatments, including "egg harvesting" from infertile women and donors
-- research also now indicates correlations between lower breast cancer survival rates and proximity in time to onset of cancer of last pregnancy
-- research also indicates a correlation between having six or more pregnancies and a risk of coronary and cardiovascular disease

These are some less common (but serious) complications:

-- peripartum cardiomyopathy
-- cardiopulmonary arrest
-- magnesium toxicity
-- severe hypoxemia/acidosis
-- massive embolism
-- increased intracranial pressure, brainstem infarction
-- molar pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease (like a pregnancy-induced cancer)
-- malignant arrhythmia
-- circulatory collapse
-- placental abruption
-- obstetric fistula

And a few more permanent side effects:

-- future infertility
-- permanent disability
-- death.

-There are plenty of other children and adults who are in need right now.

More common knowledge than a citeable fact, but that's all I've got.

Any reason you want.

There are the lovely side effects of pregnancy.

You don't like children.

You are not mentally, physically, emotionally, or fiscally ready to have a child.

There are lots of perfectly good (though probably older, non-white, and may have some baggage) children waiting to be adopted.

You have a disorder that would either A. cause you to miscarry or 2. endanger your life should you try to carry a pregnancy to full term.

You have severe mental illness. Meaning, it impairs your life and your ability to care for yourself. Nobody wants to see the schizophrenic that won't even wash herself with a baby on her hip... For all you know, she thinks that she's carrying a large egg and she's hungry.

Just because you are fertile and are able to concieve does not make it mandatory that you must have children.

In the united states alone it costs anywere on average from 18k to 21k to raise one child, ( I believe it's per year)

I hope noone minds if I elaborate on this:
Individuals with type one diabetes FREQUENTLY have long term damage that might not have occured without the pregnancy, such as retinopathy, kidney failure, and edema. Actually, Steel Magnolias presented it pretty accurately.
Women with Marfans or Classical or Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome may suffer from severe (even fatal) heart problems, or uterine rupture (as bad as it sounds) during pregnancy.
The list goes on.

*Squee* Someone else has seen Steel Magnolias? I officially heart you now.

Speaking of which, I should watch it again -- I can't even recall the main characters names anymore. gonk

http://www.maternalink.com/pl/MultiSiteIncludes/PDF/ClinicalGuidelines/Motherhood 2005.pdf

"No Decline in Deaths in 20 Years
In the United States, 2–3 women die of pregnancy complications
each day."

"Each year, about 4 million U.S. women give birth. While
many women experience normal pregnancies without
problems, about 1 million women have one or more complications
during pregnancy, labor and delivery, or the postpartum
period. These complications can range from mild to
life-threatening."

Now give that child to someone who pulls 15k or so a year.

-Bearing childern means having your hips pretty much torn in half.
-From what I hear, it hurt slike hell.
-Morning sickness.
-Hormones.
-Emotionally/Physically/Finacnally(sp?) unprepared.
-Approximately 20k a year to raise a kid.
-What if the father didn't want the kid? (I know of a father who doesn't care about his own spawn.)
(Entering "I hate kids" mode..)
-The babies are normally ulgy.
-They scream. A lot.
-Just look at my sister.
-Just look at me.
-Some people just should have been aborted. (Sorry, but it's true. They're in my World Geography class.)
