personally i think any slap bass is hard to play, everything else just takes time...but next in line would be songs with nifty bass lines

I think slap is a gimmick, I mean, yeah, I play it, a lot, more than any other style, but I don't think it's any more impressive than a Jamerson bass line or Hamm tap routine. The hardest things about being a bass player: 1) It's playing in the pocket, all the time, everytime 2) Being articulate with your line and adding just the right accents without diminishing the groove 3) Realizing that less is more 4) Steering the composition along without making it feel awkward. That being said, for me, tap is the hardest, I am the complete opposite of ambidextrous.

Slap is cake, its the first thing I taught my self. There is not 'hardest genra to play'. Its all based on, how you play it. One can turn the most simple of basslines to a complexted master peace

skiz_evil well, i am just curious, theres emo, classic rock, heavy metal, punk rock, goth rock, hair band rock, what do YOU think is the most difficult to play? While I'm not saying there are no exceptions, by and large almost all of those follow the same basic principles with the bass, and tend to be rather uncomplex once you have a sense of the 2-3 rules involved. If anything, they tend to be the reason why bass is being viewed as so simple (just keep hitting an open E and occasionally shift to the 7th, unless you're playing AC/DC, in which case just hit an open A and keep going. Detune a half step for GNR, a whole step for Motley Crue and emo, a step and a half for KISS, later Black Sabbath, and black metal.). Furthermore, most groups tend to fall into formulas, making them relatively easy to improvise if you don't know exactly what you're doing starting out (e.g. several Iron Maiden songs work along the 7th, 5th, and 3rd on the A, just cycling through them. Hit an open E when in doubt with Metallica. Open A is a safe place to start with Judas Priest.). Seriously, slap and jazz come to mind as the hardest ones to do properly. Blues isn't so hard, you just have to learn a couple scales and you're pretty well off (much of which is foundational to rock, anyway).

personally, Funk and Blues is really hard to play just because you have to keep in key while doing all of this slapping and walking and crazy s**t!! but if you can do it right, it sounds great!!

skiz_evil well, i am just curious, theres emo, classic rock, heavy metal, punk rock, goth rock, hair band rock, what do YOU think is the most difficult to play? ...all of that is under the umbrella of rock, and all of those can be handled with some nice pentatonic playing, with a tritone interval thrown in now and again...basically, in my mind, when I play rock, or am in the process of writing a song with my band, I think 'what would Geezer play?', then I add my own spin. That being said, I'd have to say jazz and funk CAN be hard, depending on what you're striving for. You could do a nice walking bass line, or you can pull a Jaco. Same for funk, you can do a nice dubby, grunty fingerline, or you can cause thumb pain. Though I guess the same can be said of all genres.

JAZZ is great for playing, coz its an independent playing style. unlike rock, bass tabs/notes are usually followed and done from the guitar chords..
slap is cool.. but as for the type of music, i go for jazz.. rofl
