Cassidy had two things when she came out of the cafeteria line. One was a mug of hot chocolate, and the other was a small bag containing two frozen pink baby mice.
She had not made up her mind on whether they were exceedingly gross or oddly alluring.
Still, she didn't have much appetite after last night's.... meal... better not think of that... so without grabbing anything else, she slithered towards the entrance, preoccupied and staring at the mice.

Finding food that appealed to the madame's good taste was proving hard indeed. It wasn't that the food itself was bad, it was that the stuff that she'd normally eat was coupled with things she DEFINATELY wouldn't eat. For instance, just coming out of the line she got herself a nice ceasar salad with vinagrette which would have made her mouth water had it not been for the fact that there was a plate of very digusting bugs right next to the fresh greens.
So as she exited the line she wondered how it was she even kept an apetite afterall. Though when she ticked her hazel eyes up finally from their fixation on her plate she saw something that gave her quite a jolt.
"Uhhhh....." she started attempting to manuever around the strange snake like creature in front of her.

With a bit of a start, Cass glanced up and behind her, looking faintly guilty. "Er, hello!"
Definitely a new person, and one gorgeous lady, too. Cass tried to wave, but with her one hand occupied with hot chocolate, and the other with the bag of dead mice, this was not terribly successful; she compromised with a friendly flapping of the bag.

Maryke gave a small if somewhat perplexed smile. Seeing the woman up close, and by now she could no doubt it was a woman, made her heart twitch around even harder. But, this time it wasn't fear. It was more of a newfound curiosity. After meeting so many of the island's occupants she knew to expect the most macab of creatures around here. Though, this one was still....well, strange.
"Hey," She said, titling her head to the side. She gave a friendly little half wave back guessing that's what the woman meant to be doing. "Do you need a hand with that?" she asked, not knowing whether she did or didn't, but she was sure carrying her bags and mug with those...wing things(?) had to be a b***h.

Cassidy looked down reflexively at her mug and mice, trying to make sense of this offer. Did her hands really look that far gone? "I'm all right," she said. "I still have most of the movement in my hands." For now, at any rate.
She tucked the bag of mice between a finger and the mug. For a moment, she seemed to be debating whether or not to offer her hand to shake; in the end, she appeared to decide against it. "I'm guessing you've been around at least long enough to run into a few people, then. I'm Cassidy."

"Right, right," she said running a hand behind her neck and then scratching the base of her head. It was unnerving to hear, that she still had the movement of her hand. Like it was an optimistic viewpoint yet s**t like that shouldn't have even been a question in the first place. It hit her again just how awful they all had it here, and how determined she was not to suffer the same fate.
"I have," Maryke nodded. "Been here almost a week, can't say it's been pleasant, but I suppose that's to be expected in the given situation. I'm Maryke," she added, shifting her plate slightly so she could edge her way over to find somewhere to sit.

"A week?" Cass grimaced slightly, and moved out of the way to let Maryke by. The tip of her tail twitched slightly. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Maryke, but I wish it had been under better circumstances."
She shifted the bag of mice back to the other hand, and took a sip of cocoa.

Maryke nodded, though caught the grimace and let a weak smile cross her features. She could only guess how hard it must be and more often then not she'd wondered what these people were like before they changed. Not just what they looked like, but as a whole. She'd come from a gritty world, and backhome she knew exactly what it meant to be consumed and molded into something you weren't original. Though this was worse.
She could still emphathize however. "I know," she nodded, "But, all the same it's nice meeting you too. So..." she said, slipping onto a nearby table that was still within range and turning around. "I take it your animal is slightly different? I mean...I can see the snake, but...what's the story on the wings?"

Cass settled back onto her own coils, something fairly akin to sitting. "I'm not entirely sure why. There's something about some old Aztec god who was a feathered snake thing. And there's some excuse about making it 'easier on me.'" She snorted. "I don't know about that. Maybe they just had to test something and it was as good a way as any. But the wings were added later."

Maryke's eyebrows furrowed together and she wished she'd paid more attention in History class to know what Cass was talking about. And then somewhere in the recesses of her mind it hit her. "Oh the plumed serpent!" she said, grinning widely. "Quetzalcoatlle," she added with an understanding head nod, letting the Spanish type word roll of her tongue perfectly. "I have a few relations down in Mexico, I'm familar with the legend.."
She sat back a little and picked up her fork, letting it hang in mid air before she took a bite of her salad. "I'm not sure what I'm turning into. I've made it a point not to ask. I'd rather not to be living in fear...well until it actually happens..." She grimaced.

"That's the one." Cass grinned. "I don't know how much I look like him, but I think that was the idea."
She nodded slowly, though. "I can understand that... I'm not sure, if I had had any sort of warning, that I would have wanted to know. I asked later, but... I don't think I wanted to know before."

"Well, the female version I'm sure," she grinned, digging more into her salad. At the next phrase she nodded once more. "Yeah, if it happens..it happens. But, at the moment I'm just trying to keep it from not happening."
She looked over at the bag Cass was hold and waved briefly towards it. "Lunch...?" She really didn't want to bog Cass down with small talk so much so that she couldn't eat her food.

Cassidy said nothing to the first statement; she couldn't bring herself to protest the futility of such an action. Hope was sometimes all there was, and she couldn't just take that away.
She did, however, laugh bashfully at the second part. "Lunch? Not my lunch. I have, um. Recently come into possession of, er. Well. A snake." That sounded excruciatingly dumb, at least to herself. Logically, it couldn't be any worse than having a pet monkey, right? "I ate yesterday. I'm good."

Another wave of confusion swept over the madame as she tried to make sense of why, if Cass ate yesterday then why wasn't she hungry today. But, then the question need not to be voiced as Maryke inwardly figured it out. Snake...right. Oh, and a snake in her room?
If Cass felt dumb then Maryke's next question would be. "A snake?" she asked, not disturbed by the creature in the least. She'd known plenty of highrisers that kept them as pets and liked to show them off. "You mean like a pet snake.....or another like you? Like a boyfriend?"

The patch of scaleless skin on Cass's face reddened slightly. "Not a boyfriend! A pet. I guess so anyway." She hunched her shoulders miserably. "I suppose that's sort of weird, my having a snake as a pet."
The word "pet" was wonderfully non-threatening. It really made a massive difference to the whole situation. If she could think of some equally non-threatening name for the thing, that would probably help even more.
"It's sort of a long story," Cass amended.
