I don't know about other religions (which is why I'm posting this here) but Christianity calls for praying to God. But I've been thinking and just thought of this: If God will do what He wants with our lives and supposedly lets bad things happen whether we want them to or not, why pray? I mean, we pray, naturally, for the bad to stop. But the Bible says He is in control and He lets everything happen for a reason. So, besides for some relief (which you can get by talking to a friend instead), why do we need to pray if He's gonna do what He wants no matter what? I don't know why I thought of this...maybe it's because my faith is lacking lately, I don't know sweatdrop

Questioning is the sign of a healthy mind I've heard, just try not to dig too deep.
Okay, let's see here....well, I know that you're not only supposed to pray for things you want, but just to talk to god, since he likes to know what's up, despite he already does, you're his child, he wants to hear from YOU.
Secondly, remember, there's a verse somewhere (forgive me for not giving the exact quote at all, but this is the jist): It says pretty much that being persistent can change minds. It gives the example of going to a friends door in the middle of the night and asking for bread. His mind is set on telling you: "I'm asleep, go away!" But persistence changes his mind. God IS perfect, but if he see's that you want something enough (like heaven through not sinning), or other people want it enough for you, he'll help. UNLESS it interferes too deeply with his plan. But remember, despite that Gods will is his own, he cares about what you want as well. Free will shows us this. Remember, it wasn't gods plan for Adam and Eve to eat the apple.)

This is another topic for another time but I don't think we really have free will. How can it be free will if He already knows what it is we're gonna do? He planned it after all. Back on topic: Just thinking about Him is kinda like praying, and why does He need to hear from us if He knows already? That's kind of a dumb concept. It's like seeing your kid doing his/her homework, you look over your kid's shoulder and see that he/she is working on an algebra equation on a worksheet with the teacher's name on it, yet you ask anyway "Are you doing your homework?" Total obvious duh. So to me it's like God seeing me cry, knowing I'm hurt, knowing why I'm hurt, being able to feel whats in my heart, but asking me anyway "Why are you crying?" HELLO YOU KNOW ALREADY! And asking for something doesn't get Him to change His mind over whether He gives it or not. If it's in His plan He will, if not He won't. He's not gonna change His mind on whether I get my ex back or whether grandpa will get better or not just because I ask Him to. It's already planned out. So there's really no point. Even for praise and forgiveness! Cuz He knows when you're thinking in your head "Thanks God" or "I shouldn't have done that." HE KNOWS! So, again, why pray?

Well, I think when it somes to god knowing all, he probably knows to the extent of several paths, or most likely paths. Like god knows that at some point in you life you'll let's say...get hit by a bus, so he makes sure there's a friend around to push you out of the way, but if you get in an argument with the friend because you've been decieved by satan or whatever, your friend may not be around either way.... sweatdrop Hmmm.....also, God hearing from us, it's like telling people you love them, like your mom or dad. They know you love them, but it doesn't hurt to say it once in a while, same goes for prayer I believe. Even if god already knows, he loves you so much, he's just happy to hear it from YOU.

But with the bus incident, He'd know we're gonna get in a fight. So wouldn't He provide another way? Or did He really want me to get hit by a bus? It really doesn't help that He knows all of it already since He planned it.

Just because God knows what we're going to do doesn't mean we don't have free will. It's not like he's planning it for us. I don't look at it as God saying "And then he will do THIS and she will do THIS! I have set it in STONE!"...I think it's more of an "Ok, he's going to do this, she's going to do this. That's their decision." It's our choice...God just knows what that choice is going to be. I don't think he "planned" our lives as in "manipulated" them.
And I pray for most of the reasons Abdiel said, and because I really like talking with God and learning from Him. Sure, God knows when I'm hurting, but I don't know what He thinks about that. When I'm hurting and I pray, I'm looking for guidance...the reason why I'm hurting, how to fix it, why God's letting me be hurt. When God asks "Why are you hurting?" He's trying to get ME to realize something about ME. He wants me to find the answer, which I usually do when talking to Him. I need to examine my life and find the source of the hurt. He already knows where it is. He could easily tell me and how I should handle it. But like any mother can tell you, a child learns a lesson better when he figures it out himself. There's where some free will ties in. wink
...Whew, I think that's my two cents. Hope it makes some sense. sweatdrop

I don't feel anything though. I'll talk to God and I'll feel relieved I got things off my chest, but no answers come to me. sad And I feel hurt after I pray because I've been praying for the same things for a few months now and I haven't gotten an answer. Not a no, not a yes, just some empty air. I've learned things, yes, but nothing that can help me in any way. As for free will and Him knowing, we don't really have free will I think. Because even if we changed our minds God would already know we were going to do that. We can't trick Him cuz He knows we'd do that. So no free will.

Oh look, I'm contributing to exactly what I wanted to avoid with this guild. sweatdrop

Skymon ...But you're doing the action, not Him. He just knows you're going to do it. It's your decision. So there is free will. Oh look, I'm contributing to exactly what I wanted to avoid with this guild. sweatdrop Hmm...atleast you make a good point. Also, prayers are often answered, just most people are unwilling to listen. If you need something blunt in your face, state that in your prayer...it works, by bro can vouch. razz But the answer isn't always what we want to hear. Now, when you don't get an answer, it may be because god is either working on it, or he wants you to figure it out on your own in the process probably learning some sort of life lesson. 3nodding

If He knows the decision how is it free will? Sorry if this is going against what you want here sweatdrop Just lost in the life that is mine. lol. And I really wish I knew what I was supposed to figure out. Cuz I think already did figure it out. Just don't see how that's gonna fix anything cuz what I'm praying for, all the power goes to the one I'm praying about, not me. So no matter what I do it's his (and His) decision not mine.

There's a big difference between knowing about something and actually making it happen. God sees everything and knows what we're going to do, but he doesn't make any decisions for us. He may nudge us and tell us which way is best, but we always have the option of saying no, although we may get hurt by it.

So, in that case, why wouldn't he offer us something that will have the same effect but is more likely to get us to say yes?

About prayer, God already knows what needs to be done, yes, but maybe he needs us to surrender first, to give all control over to God. I think my pastor did a sermon on this, but I forgot the examples he used. And about general talking with God, it's like skymon was saying. It's not just because God wants to hear us, but also because he knows that we need someone to talk to, someone who will always love us.
