Intro

The Seine was full of people.

Or was it the people full of rivers?

No, the only person with a personal river here was her, and they were most definitely not her. For one thing, they were all human. And she...

...You can do this, Eponine. No one is going to recognize you, just keep calm -

What was that.

Eponine froze, her eyes scanning the crowd surging about her as if she was the deer and they were the headlights. Surely she had just imagined it...among all these faces. Her paranoia was getting to be a little out of hand now. There was no way he could possible be here! Content with her reasoning, she stepped forth once again, humming nonsense to herself.

It was when she had reached the second chorus of her little improv that she noticed the disturbance in the people around. They were...moving. Rapidly. Clearing out to the sides of the narrow London street, to form a rolling red carpet.

There was a person at the end of it.

As Eponine walked through the jostling, buzzing crowd, she looked around at the immense ripples of humanity engulfing her. And then - everything stopped as a pair of eyes met hers. Blue, she told herself idly. The eyes are blue. Just like hi -

She bolted.

The people gasped, watching her push at the limits of her speed - too fast for any human leg to run, too fast for any human eye to watch. They applauded and cheered as she leapt over the heads of the crowd, jumping on each as if she was a skipping stone. But the river moved too fast for the little pebble, flowing endlessly toward the blue-eyed waterfall.

They dumped her in front of him. She floundered around on the ground for a bit, before bouncing up and reaching a fist forward to engage a battle.

The blow never reached its target; it was caught in mid-air by another hand, a darker one. Eponine opened her eyes and, for the first time, looked at her captor fully, scanning him head to toe. She deflated immediately, like a popped balloon, lying shredded and meaningless on the ground. "You are...not the manager?" she asked him. No doubt he wouldn't understand her the least bit, but she had to make sure. Maybe he had gone under plastic surgery.

In response, the man neither shook his head or nodded; his free hand came forth and opened to reveal the treasure nestled inside. It was a white lotus blossom.

Eponine's eyes widened, beginning to show the machinery at the edges. Hopefully, they could be passed off as capillaries later. Her mouth opened with the eyes, gaping almost foolishly open, then pressed into an apprehensive smile. "Hello," she said feebly.

He was most definitely not the manager.

About Eponine

User Image

Name: PROTOTYPE001Eponine. Although she usually neglects to mention the 'PROTOTYPE001' part of her name when she introduces herself to others.

Name Meaning: Her identification: Eponine is the character she was created to play, and she was the 001 (and prototype) of her kind to be built.

Gender: Female

Species: Machine, robot, AI - something along those lines.

Nationality: United States

Time Period: Future. Exact date uncertain.

Age: Although she looks to be around 18 years or so, in truth she has only been built a couple of months before (at the time of her joining L.O.T.U.S.). But what is time, anyhow?

Personality: She's very friendly, always smiling; although quiet and sensitive. Meanwhile, on the inside of her mind, she is very paranoid and always frightened and suspicious of someone finding out she's not a human then sending her back to the company to be destroyed. Although she seems nice enough on the outside, she always tries to find some way to slip away from social events of any kind. Despite this standoffish characteristic of hers, she is most definetely lonely. But she daren't to mingle with humans, lest she be found out - so usually she contents herself with the mice or cockroaches.

Appearance: She may not be an organic being. Nevertheless, she still looks remarkably human. A rather normal human, at that, simply a normal human who has gone through hard times: a heap of tangled black hair that falls just below her shoulders, crammed under a frayed dark brown cap; eyes an unimpressive dull shade of mud-brown; petite build drowned over by a beige trenchcoat several sizes too big for her. Under all the dirt smudges on her face, her complexion is rather pale. The only indication of her true origins is a hidden panel on the back of her neck which opens to her machine inards; thus, she always keeps her hair down, to conceal it from those hunting her.

Other: Eponine can't eat or drink, or even sleep and breathe. Nor can she 'die', as she is not technically 'living' in the first place. She can't even bleed, as she has no blood to fall. But she can feel physical pain, she can become 'broken' (and as such, will 'die'), and most importantly, she can love and hate, and all that is in between. She can even feel lust - her creators reasoned that lust was part of love, so to get the full concept they'd better add that in, too. Basic self-defense also has been programmed into her mind (so if anyone tried to steal her she could defend herself). She is also has a lovely voice, and loves to sing; the one quality given to her that she thanks her creators for.

Eponine's Past

She could think for herself, had a will of her own, could follow through it. She could smell and touch, hear and see. Walking and talking, singing her laments - as normal to her as breathing, although she did not exactly breathe.

She could laugh, she could cry. Although most of the time, she managed a combination of both and laughed through her tears.

She could cause pain and feel pain, even emotionally.

Especially emotionally, perhaps.

One could look at her and declare her a HUMAN. And they would be correct...except for the simple fact that she WAS NOT HUMAN.

No; she was one of the thousands upon thousands theatre robots tailor-made down to the last smudge of dirt, the last freckle, to take the place of humans on the theatre stage.

She was Eponine, of the musical Les Miserables.

-;-♥-;-

Except she was not the same as them.

She was not the same as the other machines. They had made her that way. She was the first, and most probably last, of her kind.

The other robots could not think, nor had they no will. They could laugh and cry, but it meant nothing to them. Their skin was hard as steel, their touch cold as ice. For that was how they had made them that way.

She was the only performer in the theatre who was even remotely human. And Eponine took full advantage of that fact by crying all night, every night.

Eponine was the result of the complaint that the theatre machines did not act well enough. Their facial expressions were perfect, their lines delivered flawlessly - and yet, the audience still was not satisfied. One critic said their was no emotion in their eyes. Another complained in the stiff, robotic way they moved, and how their voice showed no feeling. The manager of the theatre was furious. "They are robots!" he cried. "You can't expect them to be human!" After this quote appeared in the newspapers, the audience began suggesting that they went back to the old way of doing things: auditioning people to do the acting. After this, the manager was even more frustrated. "Humans make mistakes! They need rehearsals! They need breaks! They need pay!" he shouted. "Not to mention they always breathe through the goddamn DEATH SCENES! Going back to that...it's pointless! It's stupid! It's - "

And so the compromise was formed. They would commission a theatre robot...with emotions. "That is good," the manager said, finally looking pleased. "The efficiency and the perfection of the machine world, coupled with the beauty of the human mind." He barked out a big, booming laugh. "That is good," he repeated. But now it was the engineers and scientists who complained. They had never built a machine that both had a mind and perfection. It was either a robot with emotions but had the potential to make mistakes, or a robot through and through. The manager's good mood evaporated. "GET TO WORK AND FIGURE IT OUT!" he roared, flecks of spit flying from his mouth.

The deal was formed, approved, and set into work. It was decided the prototype theatre robot would be fashioned to play the part of Eponine from Les Miserables, the perfect character for a test. Although she did not play a prominent part in the musical, the part she did play was a passionate one, and would show instant results.

The results were both instantaneous and spontaneous when they came. PROTOTYPE001Eponine was a success. The theatre sent out an order to replace all of their current performer robots.

But problems began showing up, in just the first week. The constant crying, for one thing. When she wasn't crying, she was singing, loudly. The people who lived near the theatre were beginning to get frazzled. And Eponine, with nothing to do when not performing, did not shut off like the rest of the robots, but instead tended to wander everywhere and get in everyone's way. Once, she even attempted to go outside the theatre. The manager was in his usual bad temper when she was brought to him. "You are not to cry or sing anymore outside of performances. You are not to leave your room," he said sternly, pointing to her door like he was scolding little child. Except when parents scolded their children for wandering off, they usually had a note of love and worry among their anger. The manager's voice was as cold and hard as if he was the robot.

But he was not, and Eponine was, and Eponine was the one who was crying. In the solace of her room, she struck up a mournful ditty through her weeping, to comfort herself. However, she was careful to keep her tears silent, her voice soft.

And yet, she still caused problems. One week after the reprimand, Eponine started crying on stage, in the middle of her big piece: On My Own. At first the audience glanced at each other - was she supposed to do that? Maybe it was another twist thrown in, and she would pick up the song a couple sobs later. Then they knew something was wrong, when she walked off the stage, amid the dead silence.

An announcement was made: "We are very sorry for the inconveniece. Another robot will soon be taking its place. Needless to say, the malfunctioning will be destroyed." Another robot was making the announcement, and its voice was very flat. "Please enjoy the rest of the show."

Eponine heard it too. So she was not all that surprised to find her feet continue to walk, walk, walk, right out the front door.

And then she ran.

-;-♥-;-

It was lucky she didn't have to eat or drink, else she would have died all too soon. She hid in the sewers for the months after her escape, in constant fear of going out and being recognized by someone from the theatre.

So it was really all by chance that Eponine learned of the chaos that was currently reigning the world outside the theatre. And even bigger chance that she heard of the Lotus. A whisper on the wind.

Her mind raced, fizzed, sparked. This could be a future for her. Far, far, away from here, far away from the theatre...in a place where no one had heard of the runaway malfunctioning theatre robot. She looked normal enough, and most certainly could act like one. She could even lie and invent a whole different history. No one would notice she was not human.

...It just might work.

Friends and Acquaintances

Shane...is a nice fellow. For a human. In fact, the first human I met in this human-infested place. We met - bumped into each other - first in the garden, where we chatted for quite a long bit. He told me of his home in 'green Ireland', and we got a little too close to the uncomfortable subject of my home, but soon backed off. I next saw him at that mission dealing with pirates - I don't think he was too impressed with my quick thinking skills back there. I wonder why he wasn't at the Halloween party. I was quite looking forward to seeing him there, perhaps have him show me around his country. He sounded quite fond of it, and quite eager to return.

Estrelas can be most accurately described as a one-of-a-kind girl, as well as my best friend at the moment. Fancy, having a human as a best friend - although considering there are only humans here, I suppose that is only to be expected. Although to be perfectly accurate, not all are humans here. Estrelas is the owner of an adorable rabbit named Angel, who is quite friendly and likes to be petted. Angel lives up to her name, certainly. I met Estrelas and Angel in the garden as well, although that was not our first meeting, but rather our second. Our first might as well be discounted however - Estrelas said something about "nice lights" and I ran away. Despite the bad start, we're best of friends as we could be, a human and a machine.

Moira I have only met briefly. I hope I didn't offend her; I first and last met her when I was still rather shy and unused to the human presence, so I'm afraid I didn't say or do much when introduced to her. Can't say much about her.

Shee is another of my 'best friends' I suppose, though not as much as Estrelas. She's a nice girl though, very kind and sweet. If I ever were to tell anyone in the future about my origins...it'd probably be her first. She's the trustworthy kind, and I'm sure she could keep a secret. I prefer her to her brother when it comes to taking on missions with them, that's for certain.

Wraith, Shee's brother, also the big bad boss, is really not all that bad. I don't think he likes me much though, seeing as I made such a big fool of myself in the previously mentioned pirate-related mission (the one I took with Shane, as well as Estrelas). However, despite the intimidating aura as well as previous bad experience, I feel he really is a nice man.

About Les Miserables

Eponine does not really matter in the whole scheme of things; that is, in Jean Valjean's life. But she does provide a nice little side story.

The musical version and the book version are pretty much the same, basically; only differences are there is a little more to the book, and the quotes I feel like mentioning from each. XD

Musical Version~

Eponine is the daughter of the Thenardiers. Although it doesn't mention any other siblings, there is nothing that says there aren't.

The Thenardiers are a family of thugs, basically. They used to own an inn. They also used to own a young girl, whose mother had begged and paid them to take care of so that she might have a better life. Of course, she didn't. Her name was Cosette. Eponine and Cosette are approximately the same age.

Fantine, Cosette's mother, died, and the Thenardiers sold her for 1500 francs to Jean Valjean, who had been taking care of Fantine before she died and did this as a last favor. Cosette was whisked off to a happy life of sunshine and roses. XD

Now Eponine...she's a different story. The Thenadiers lost the inn, and became a family of beggars. Soon, they became a family of thieves.

Eponine also became a childhood friend of a young Revolutionary, whose name is Marius. Eponine has fallen desperately in love with this Marius, but he doesn't notice her feelings at all.

One day, Marius and Cosette bump into each other, and fall in love instantly. But Cosette disappears before Marius can ask her name or address. He asks Eponine to find her for him. This Eponine does, despite the fact she wanted Marius for herself. Marius and Cosette fall more in love than ever, and Eponine watches outside at the gate, falling more in love and despair.

The Thenardier gang arrive. They wish to rob this Jean Valjean, certain he must be rich. Eponine refuses to let them pass, and when they tell her to step away, she screams to alert Cosette, Marius, and Jean Valjean people were there. The Thenardiers run away. Marius leaves, to avoid being discovered by Valjean.

Valjean believes the people outside the gate were Javert and the police (long story. I'm just telling 'Ponine's >P), and so tells Cosette to get ready and pack, they had to move to avoid being found by the people.

The Revolution starts. Marius, at the barricade, gives Eponine a letter to give to Cosette. Eponine delivers it, then heads back - and is shot while entering the barricade. She dies in Marius's arms.

The Thenardiers, meanwhile, have pretty much forgotten her and are living the life of the wealthy off the goods stolen from the dead soldiers of the Revolution.

In a Nutshell: Eponine loves Marius who doesn't love her, and dies while acting as the link between the one Marius loves and Marius. Sucks majorly for her.

Songs Eponine sings:

In My Life/A Heart Full of Love, in which Eponine brings Marius to see Cosette.

Plumet Attack, in which Eponine stops the Thenardier Gang from robbing the house.

On My Own, in which Eponine is walking through the streets to deliver the letter to Cosette, and she laments her hopeless love.

A Little Fall of Rain, in which Eponine dies in Marius's arms.

Finale, in which Eponine appears along with Fantine (Cosette's mother) to the dying Jean Valjean as angels.

Random Quotes I Absolutely Love:

'In the rain, the pavement shines like silver.
All the lights are misty in the river.
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight,
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever...'

'And remember, the truth that once was spoken:
To love another person is to see the face of God..!'

Book Version~

This is slightly more complicated.

The Thenadiers, once again, are complete thugs. Fantine brings Cosette to her new home with them, attracted so by the happiness of Eponine and her younger sister, Azelma as they played together.

The second Fantine leaves, Cosette goes under the table with the cat and dog, and she settles in for a childhood of sadness.

Fantine sacrifices her hair and her front teeth to earn money to send to Cosette, which is spent away by the Thenardiers. By the time she dies and Valjean comes to save Cosette, a son is added to the Thenardier family: Gavroche. Despite the daughters being cooed over and favored, Gavroche is not much liked by the Thenardiess, who pretty much ignores him.

There's more! The Monsieur Thenardier used to steal items of value off the dead soldiers in the Napoleonic wars. One dead soldier happened to still be living, and regained conciousness after Thenardier took his purse and watch. He believed Thenardier to be his savior. The officer's name was Pontmercy, and he would be Marius's father. He taught Marius to search for his savior, the Thenardier, and reward him.

Ten years later, Eponine is offered to Marius as a sort of helper by the Thenardier, who now calls himself Jondrette.

Marius also, at this point, sees Cosette every day at the park when he goes for his walk. He does not, however, speak to her, shy as he is. One day Cosette and Valjean are not at the park. Marius has no idea where she's gone, but he's devastated. He asks Eponine of a favor: to find the girl's address.

Marius discovers Jondrette is planning to ambush somebody and take their money. That somebody happens to be Valjean, who now calls himself Leblanc. Marius goes to Javert (a policeman) for help, and together they foil the thief's plan. The Thenardiers are arrested, but they get out later. Gavroche is out at the time, and comes back to find his family gone. He goes off, singing ditties merrily, set to make a life of his own a beggar/pickpocket boy. Marius moves to a different place.

Eponine, when let out, looks for Marius, but discovers he has moved. She asks his neighbor where Marius has gone and waters his garden for him.

Then she sets out to find him, and once she has, she leads him to Cosette.

Marius and Cosette write letters back and forth. Then they meet in person. They are utterly in love.

Eponine often stalks Marius, but Marius merely disregards her as a friend with nothing better to do.

One day the Thenardier gang appear near Cosette's house. Eponine had followed Marius there. They are planning to rob it. Eponine tries to convince them the family is poor, there is nothing to steal, and when they persist, she threatens to scream. They go away.

Valjean and Cosette one day are to move away. Marius is heartbroken. The Revolution has started, so he goes to the barricade, but asks Gavroche to take a letter to Cosette. Eponine comes back with a letter from Cosette - but has no intention of giving it to Marius.

Then she sees Marius in the line of fire. Desperate to protect him, she steps in front of him and takes the shot through the hand and out the back. Marius runs off.

She lays there bleeding, waiting for Marius to come back and notice her. He finally does, and she gives him the letter, not wanting him to hold it against her, as she figures he too will die soon. As a last favor, she requests him kiss her on her forehead when she dies. He does, then immediately forgets about her as he reads the letter from Cosette.

Gavroche also dies during the Revolution, when he goes out bravely to gather ammunition while no one else dared to.

It does not say what happened to Azema (or I missed it), but the Thenardiers get rich from ransacking the valubles from the dead soldiers of the Revolution.

In a Nutshell: Um...same as the musical. XD

Note: some of the summary above might be slightly incorrect. Been a long time since I've read the book.

Random Quotes I Absolutely Love:

(Okay, this first one is really weird and really long XD But I like it.)

'"Look! Look, this doll [the kitten] is more fun than the other one. She moves, she cries, she's warm. Come on, let's play with her. She'll be my little girl; I'll be a lady. I'll come to visit you, and you look at her. Bit by bit you will see she has whiskers, and then you have to act surprised. And then you'll see her ears, and then you'll see her tail, and that will surprise you. And you must say to me, 'Oh! Good heavens!' and I'll say to you, 'Yes, madame, my little girl is like this. Little girls are like this nowadays.'"'

'"God will bless you," [Father Mabeuf] said, "you are an angel, since you care for flowers."

"No," [Eponine] answered, "I'm the devil, but that's all the same to me."'

'[Eponine] opened her fingers and let the coin fall to the ground, then, looking at [Marius] glumly, "I don't want your money," she said.'

'"I'm not the daughter of a dog, I'm the daughter of a wolf."'
