There are a few kids at my school that think that atheism is a stereotype. One kid in my drivers ed class almost went on about how athiest people are, he stopped when he saw I was glaring at him. It's stupid, really, just because people don't believe in god doesn't mean we listen to rap, worship satan or are always depressed and have ill morals. stare

Naiya San I read this thing from a curch, that if you eat count chocula you may be a goth biggrin . God I lvoe the over Zelous people, constant soruce of entertainment. if I eat count chocula then I may be a goth... alrighty... eating chocolaty cereal makes me part of a subculture that I am already a part of... O.o I don't eat chocolate cereal... it doesn't taste like chocolate... Churches are so ingnorant that way, it's either their way or the highway... stare I was also accused of being mormon cuz I don't listen to rap.. wtf. Just because I think rap sucks, doesn't mean I'm effing mormon.

A large part of the atheist stereotype bothers me to the point where I don't like to identify as an atheist for fear of being equated with things that I am not.
Firstly, that all atheists are angsty and rebellious teenagers, particularly being a teenager myself: I don't like the idea that people think I've put no thought into this or haven't searched my soul (figuratively speaking, of course).
Secondly, that all atheists are anti-religion generally or anti-Christianity specifically. One of the things most closely connoted to atheism is the idea that atheists go around either insulting religion, insinuating that only stupid and/or ignorant people are religious, insisting that their belief, or lack of, is the correct one, etc. Sadly, this is at least partially true of many of the atheists that I have met, but it is not true of me. A lot of things that atheists are taken to believe or hold with I disagree with.
Thirdly, that all atheists are strong atheists: having an active belief that there is no God, or denying that it is possible for God to exist. This isn't true of me, I lack belief in God but I do not have a positive belief that He does not or cannot exist: I accept that there may be a God and that when I die I might meet Him, I just don't 'feel' that there is one. And the distinction is important, both to me and to most strong atheists. This is the main reason that I call myself an agnostic, because the popular idea of an agnostic is much closer to what I actually believe, and also because I am first an agnostic (I believe that God's existance cannot be proved or disproved, at least at the current time) and then I am a weak atheist.
And so on.

I tend to find two types of steotypes.
1) Angry anti-god wild teenager. Usually told "It's just a faze." 2) Snotty know-it-all brat who thinks he/she is too smart to believe in religion.
In truth, steotypes don't come from thin air, so I've made it a mission of mine not to follow either. I'm relatively smart, not snotty, and I have my complaints about religion, but I'm not anti-religious.

I love how people think you need religion to be a decent human being. I don't believe in God, and I'm not a criminal. I love animals and don't hurt people for no reason. I'm not a crazy slut. Despite flaws, which we all have, I'm basically a good person. I just don't believe in God. neutral

I've never really had any situations with this personally. Other than one or two responses to finding out I was atheist that made it seem that they were surprised...I could kind of tell I didn't fit whatever stereotype they had in mind, but they didn't say anything directly. Just a sorta 'Really? You are?' kind of thing. Most people I've known don't care, and I even live in a quite conservative place. *shrugs* I have heard people talking about church and state stuff, and part of their logic was tied up in the idea that society needs religion or it would be lawless and completely immoral.

*sigh* I had another thrown at me this week...
According to a guy in my 3rd hour class... atheists are druggies
I certainly know I do not fit this... I am 100% drug free and proud of it
I hate it when people do that... it's stupid, we are people too

One of my teachers said that "Religous people have church, atheists have biker gangs".
I don't think my mouth closed for the rest of the day.

mrtommyos One of my teachers said that "Religous people have church, atheists have biker gangs". I don't think my mouth closed for the rest of the day. That definatly isn't true, I used to know a few bikers that were christian and mormon in California when I lived there.
