I'm starting up a GSA at my highschool in the fall as long as the principal says yes. I already have a basic idea of what's going to happen and there are a good 12 people who want to join if I start it. I was just wondering what all of you would want to see a GSA do at your highschool. Since I'll be heading it I really want to make sure there's stuff for everyone other then a chance to just talk.

Lets see, theres another thread somewhere in here about "How to start a GSA at your school" if you need any help. I'll try to find the link.
With GSA a really important thing to do is keep the topic of the day changing and always something that can fill up the time. This year with my school's GSA about half way though the year it started to really fallout just because there was nothing to talk about. So always make sure you have different things to talk about and games here and there.
Since our GSA is so strong and things we get the chance to though little parties and what not.
The year before last our President had a BBQ at her house and we had a movie night (gsa movies of course. But I'm A Cheer Leader, ect.) because she lived so close to the school.
So things to do I would say is one of the most important things to up-hold in a GSA and a mix of more stuff is what I would like to say.
Also, if you don't have strong leader ship then nothings going to work. Your staff has to be able to work with each other easily. And with that I think the two most important people (besides the president of course) are the public realtions and the sectary.
Plubic relations really hast to know how to work with people well and give off a good self image. Towards the school's staff and things the most. Plus you and public relations will have to work well together so maybe you can plan to have guest speakers to come in and talk with the group.
Then sectary I think is the next important, keeping the log of notes and everything in order along with handling the budget and any possible donations and things you get.
xD Sorry, very long.

Thanks for that. I've got all the info for how to start the GSA and a website on it but not very many suggestions on what to do in a small urban center. I like the BBQ and movie night suggestions. I'm figuring a little bit before Day of Silence we'll have a couple meetings about that and try to have like...a mini pride week sort of thing. It's probably going to be a meeting a week since our school has lots of other things that people are involved in.
As for the President/PR/Secretary it's gonna be me and two of my best friends so that's good. We're all used to leading since me and one of the girls also started leading another club at school this past year. And I know most of the people planning on joining this year (yay for being involved in lots of stuff).
If you've got anymore suggestions though, please send them my way.

I just got great news! In my city there's only one other GSA, and it's only a year old. Well a friend of mine who's part of the university GSA put me in contact with a group called GenQ who put me in contact with that GSA so we could correspond and plan together. Turns out the girl who runs their GSA is an old friend of mine from grade 8.

My school doesn't have a GSA, but it is a middle school, the high school I'm going to next year might have one. My school had one poster (which has now been torn to shreds) that said the phrase, "that's gay!" crossed out with the red circle and bar.
Anyways, starting a GSA sounds like a great idea! I don't think anyone in my middle school would be interested in that sort of group, seeing as the oldest students are only 13, my age, and from what I hear in the hallways most of us seem to be homophobes, or very stereotypical (is that the right word?) Maybe that is a good reason to start one.
Good luck leading your group, I think I'd like to start one also if I know there will be people interested in joining.

We have to actually call us a 'Diversity Club' since we can't just have a GSA, since, in our school, we have TONS of homophobics that would probably come & harrass us & shizz. =/ That's really cool that you're going to start up a GSA. =]

Well it's getting really annoying. Because we're a "controversial group" we need to go through some special channels so that we don't upset people. As such I have to keep waiting for people to get back to me and no one is. So right now my friends and I are doign a lot of the GSA stuff without having an actual group. Though we're getting a lot of teachers on our side so pretty soon we'll have enough people supporting us that we can ignore the channels and just start it. Cause the only person we need permission from to put up posters is the principal and he's behind us. So the only one stoppign us is the school guidance counsellor.
Cross your fingers folks!

I'm a member of my schools anime club, and everytime we're mentioned on the anonucements about half the people in whatever class I'm in at the time snickers or makes openly rude comments, but that hasn't stopped me from going yet. The key thing is to know how to properly deal with harrassment if any comes up, if people start harassing you, make sure you have a rebuttle that is backed logically or is fairly witty, it works for me biggrin You could also ignore people who try to harrass you, I know ignoring that kind of thing is hard, but it shouldn't stop you from trying. I say go out there and try to establish a GSA of your own biggrin

Before I entered my high school, there was an active GSA... They visited my middle school on diversity day. When high school started for me, however, the group no longer existed. When I requested the group a couple years later, saying I could find a teacher to be in charge, I was turned down... The office said the Diversity/Anime Club (they were combined starting halfway through freshman year) was enough for that purpose... However, the group was more like an anime/DDR group... Or a place to hang out, eat, and watch movies... I mean, it was a club with more gay people or tolerant straights, but they weren't always nice kids and they really didn't care much about the topic we wanted to be at hand.
