I was just wondering...

I'm in a show band. We swing our instruments whilst we march, we chair step all the time, we dance around on stand still tunes, etc.

Also in out fourth tune of each show we do a coreographed (sp?) dance. This year's is extremely hard because it ends with the entire band going down into splits.

I guess that would depend on your definition if the band styles. Personally, I think we're kind of a show band. I mean, we do little dances and stuff in the stands. Some sections do some kind of instrument swing while marchin' in block band. If we can get the moves and the music on the field and we feel that the show just needs some visuals, we'll come up with somethin' and perform like that if everyone does so. But we don't do any kind of visuals unless we have the music and marchin' down first. If we don't all roll step, march in time, and play the music, then there's no added visuals. But if you define a show band as one of those bands that does 'popular' music and dances and is horrible at traditional marchin', then that's definately not us. I guess you could say we're somethin' like the band from the movie 'Drumline' [the one Nick Cannon's character was in].

What do you call 'traditional marching?' We're a show band and we have to chop step (thigh is parallel to the ground on every step). It's much more difficult than roll step.

I'll agree a lot of show bands try, but end up falling short. I'll just leave it at there's a reason our overlays have a little #1 on them.

i guess we're just a regular marching band, though we have kilts and bag pipes. we do some goose stepping sometimes, but it depends if it fits. other wise the only dancing we do is during the drum solo in the stands.

our band does corps marching and i am glad. we are one of 4 schools in our school district that do that. most other schools do crappy, bladdy show band marching. they cant even bring themselves to step on beat...

I don't know what I'm in but, my marching band is competive. We go aroung and compete in compations. We're a standard marching band and the only competive middle school marching band in the Redlands district. We do these dances for fun parades in the winter during Chirstmas. We go up against other middle schools and we go against high schools and we bet them alot. The only thing that we do bad in is our colorgaurd because last year they sucked!!!

I'm just a high school band. We do regular old roll-step on the beat, but we always have a high mark time visual in our show.

High step is like... wierd. Sounds like a 70's core kinda thing. Personally, I'm glad that most cores kinda evolved past the high mark time thing. *shudder*

We're somewhere in between. We're mostly corps style, but we love to skank (sp?) and last year we had a dance section in the middle of the show. Our band isn't very good, so we mostly march for the fun of it.

Traditional marchin' = always roll steppin', unless specified otherwise [which is rare for us] and all that jazz. If someone is not doin' a lateral move right, or someone ain't on step, or few people are playin', or if we don't turn on time, or if someone ain't roll steppin, etc., we stop and go back over and over until the problem is corrected. I have to admit, some bands I have seen have been horrible. Sound, marchin', everythin' is just horrible. Luckily, we're not that bad, but there is always room for improvement.

My band competes, but they only started competing two years ago, and we're getting better every year. However, our band director likes to compare us to a band in our county that won Atlantic Coast Championships... domokun

We do regular old roll step, visuals being the exception.

We do sort of the same thing with the correcting. Staff members go out onto the field with whistles, and of course the my head BD is up on his ladder, and if anyoine makes a mistake, or isn't playing, they blow the whistle, announce who it was, and what they did. Then we run it back to the beginning and start over. (I think the record is like 75 eek .)

We're a show band. We got last place in competition two years ago because we were a show band, not corps-style like all of the other marching bands. It's not as common around here I guess. Our BD is from Miami and throughout high school and college he was in show bands.

There's a college band up here that used to high step. I don;t think they do it anymore, though. I don;t see where high step became a show band thing; it's just a different style. Liek there's one Corp that starts on the right foot instead of the left and another that pulls their toes up on the backward. Damn! I can't remember the names of them, though!

As for my band, we're just a regular 'ole high school marching band. Roll steps, off the heel for backwards, sometimes we have little dance things and stuff in our shows. It's sad, we never do any flashy stuff for the, like, one parade that we march in. It's so sad...

that's about the same as us. we will do something about 10,000 times before the derictors think it's good enough. We also do a lot of danceing and bodystuff. I really like our show this year even though we have a lot of solos therefore we dance a lot!
