*Qualifying Commentary by Ponza*
The first session started with both Super Aguri and Midland F1 on track, being suckered into warming up the circuit more or less. The first 10 minutes was a toss of random teams chucking times out there, until... Kimi Raikkonen, on his first hot lap, losses control of his McLaren Mercedes after the right rear suspension fails, knocking off his rear wing in the process. Debris littered the track, and the broken tyre somehow helped Raikkonen get on a bouncy ride on the tarmac. Red flags waved with 4:34 remaining on the countdown clock.
When the dust settled and the debris was cleaned up, all 21 remaining cars were peeling out of pit lane to get laps on the sheet, as 12 of them had NO hot laps made. When the timer finally hit zero to end the segment, both Aguri and Midland teams found themselves out, as well as Ralf Schumacher in his Toyota.
The second segment ran similar to the first, only Red Bull and Toro Rosso were the victims of the somewhat cool track surface. Tonio Liuzzi showed a good lap time, but it clearly wasn't enough for anything. A lot of courtesy out there, though, especially from Mark Webber. When the second session ended, 3 Red Bull branded cars (David Coulthard being one), Jarno Trulli in the other Toyota, Nico Rosberg in a Williams-Cosworth and unfortunately, with 10 seconds left on the clock, Jacques Villeneuve found himself as 11th, and failed to make "The Super Pole".
The third segment runs differently. All cars must take on the amount of fuel they wish to start the race with. It's like a handicap, which is a great idea. They can burn the fuel in the session, but will retake that amount after the session ends. It was clear that a number of teams took full fuel, like JP Montoya and McLaren, and Nick Heidfeld for BMW. Renault may have been on that same strategy, as they performed mediocre in the session. The pole battle went back and forth between Felipe Massa and his teammate, a one Michael Schumacher, but when it came down to the wire, Massa got within .047 seconds of his elder, and that just wasn't enough to dethrone "The Meistro". Ferrari Front Row in Bahrain!
