I am looking to get a 30g+ tank, and it is going to have live plants. My problem lies in what sort of fish I should get for it. I would be very happy with two or three larger (8-10 inch) fish (which I'd get small). I very much like the rounder, fatter looking fish, like many of the cichlids and gouramis.
I am having trouble finding which, if any, of those would work in a tank of that size with plants. If anyone has any advice on the matter, I would love to hear it.
Edit: Apparently, that wouldn't work. I was just told (rather rudely) by someone that I'd only be able to keep two five to six inch fish alive and happy a 30 gallon tank. So, fish in that range, I guess.

Actually i've read that you can even keep oscars in a 30 gallon tank, and using the 1 inch of fish per gallon can work in some cases but since you want larger fish It wouldnt work because they would be large bodied.
Here are a few setups I would recomend: (oe_mizunagi also aproved these wink )
Larger fish: a pair of Blue Gouramis [4-5 inches] 2 swordtails [3 inches or more (depending on tail size)] 5 rosy barbs [2-2.5 inches] make sure to get either all femalse or mostly females
Angelfish: 3 swordtails [2 female/1 male] 6 cory cats 2 small angelfish put the angelfish in last and swordtails first for cycling
Angelfish 2: 4 angelfish 3 cories (verry hard to cycle this tank and will probably result in fish loss)
Since you want to do a planted tank I DEFINATELY do not recomend Oscars, they would kill all your plants and if you have lots of gravel in your tank they will move it around and possible crack your tank.
good lucky! ^_^

i kept two oscars in a thirty gallon tank for awhile but they quickly grew out of it, i kept plastic plants as decorations and they felt free to shred them as they pleased

Thank you so much for the advice! I'm not all that fond of the angelfish, but I really liked the blue gouramis; I was thinking about those anyway.
And, while I am rapidly falling in love with the oscars at the store, I don't think they'd be right for me, concidering I really want plants and don't plan on getting a truly huge tank.

I have a book that says you could put 1 oscar in a 30 gallon tank but it would be kind of cramped for him and you would need 2 filters and a bare bottom tank x.x

Update:
While my mom had already agreed to let me get the tank (as it was my money that I was going to be spending) my dad has said no. I'm not allowed to get a tank.
He will, however, as some sort of compromise (chea, right) be putting in a koi pond some time soon. =D Which is what I wanted anyway, I'd just assumed I'd never be able to get it.
Still, thank you so much for you advice on the tropical fish, and I'm sorry to have waisted your time with it.

That sucks, my dad bitches about my fish obsession all the time, the only reason I got my 30 gallon was because it came from my aunt and was free. The only other tank I'm aloud to get is for my snake, my dad thinks he needs a biger one x.x

It's alright. I love koi anyway, and I'd kinda rather have them. =)
What kind of snake do you have? I have a kenyan sand boa.

It'd need to be deep so it didn't heat up too much over the summer. =P But, for us to put in the pond would cost a couple thousand dollars, and we don't have that.
