The almost completely white lioness stepped carefully over the border of the pridelands, taking care to sniff delicately at the scent markings before doing so. She flicked her long, reddish brown tipped tail and then let out a quiet roar, to let anyone who may be near know that she was around. She lifted her muzzle to sniff the air that blew past her gently, playing with the tuft of fur on her head and ruffling the rest of the short fur that covered her body. She was very pleased that she had finally reached her destination, having thought she'd never find it when she first started out.

Avellano thought she'd had the scent of water for a moment and decided to just go straight, as was most likely best at this point. Maybe she would stumble upon a watering hole by accident and end up finding someone there. She smiled to herself, looking around as she moved deeper into the territory. It really was beautiful, as all the others she'd told of her destination had said to her. She sighed lightly and flicked her tail, perking her ears and not letting her guard down, just in case something unpleasant should happen.

A thin creamy form lounged at the edge of the watering hole, enjoying the late afternoon sun on her fur. Sarabi, Queen of the Pridelands, had made her daily trip for water earlier than usual and was enjoying some leasure time before she had to start her daily race against the sun to return to Priderock. It wasn't really much of a race, in truth. With all the frequent stops Sarabi had to make to catch her breath and rest, she barely moved faster than the slide of the shadows over the ground. The creamy queen hated her illness and impairment, but such was life. Nothing could cure her of this, so she struggled to just live day to day with what her body would allow her.

Cool water lapped around one extened paw as it dabbled in the water. All the other creatures, upon learning who it was that lay by the water, had withdrawn to a respectful distance to let the queen have her privacy. Yet another thing Sarabi wished she could change. Lately, since her mate and children had become so distant to her, she had found herself getting lonely and longing for the time when the pride had been more like a close knit family, and she'd know each lion or lioness by sight. Now she doubted she knew even half the new memebers, since most went to Mufasa to be accepted. Even those that came to her never stuck around, and she only saw them after at a distance. The elder lioness missed having close relationships and having someone to mother and watch over. A soft sigh made her slat-ribbed sides rise and fall gently, the sound almost ironicly like what her life was like now. Nothing but a soft passing of air, hardly noticed until after it was gone, if at all.

Avellano yawned widely, starting to feel tired as she could tell she was nearing a waterhole. She caught herself wishing that she'd find a nice patch of shade there that she could rest in, and started wondering where she might be able to find the king or queen of these lands, to speak with them and hopefully be accepted into their pride. The white and dirt red lioness stared at the huge rock formation that lay ahead, pride rock, she guessed, from what she'd been told by other lions she'd passed and spoken to on her way here. "It sure looks different than what I thought it would..." She mumbled, trailing off as she caught sight of the waterhole.

She gasped as she padded closer to it, tail twitching behind her and ears lain back slightly. She felt a little weird being on pride lands, but if one was to be accepted into a pride, it was only smart to travel into their lands, right? She laughed at herself and then forgot about that and focussed her attention on the beauty of the waterhole. She sped up a little, excited to be there, and also very pleased to be able to get a drink of water soon. As she padded up to the water's edge, the white lioness noticed another lioness laying on a rock just a couple yards down the edge, trailing her paw through the water. She took a quick drink then looked at the lioness, she seemed sad...

"Hello there." She called out, hoping she wouldn't startle the other. "I'm very new to these lands, I was wondering if you might tell me how I could get to see the king or queen here?" She inquired, trying not to be too ignorant of the other lioness' feelings. She had looked incredibly saddened, and Avellano hated to interrupt her thoughts for a question so silly, but she honestly had no clue where she could find either of them, and didn't think it could hurt to ask for some help, or at least a little bit of a clue as to where they were.

Soft, rounded ears tipped in black swiveled at the sound of another approaching creature, the owner paying little mind till a soft voice called to her in greeting. Bright crimson eyes, her families eyes, turned to steadily regard this new commer. A lioness of bright white met those eyes, and Sarabi let a smile slide onto her sunken yet kind face. "Hello, dear." She said softly, her tail gently curling in the dirt beside her prone body. "Come to the watering hole for a drink too, eh? As for you question, I think introductions are in order first."

With a soft groan, Sarabi pushed herself up onto her slim haunches and curled her tail around her paws. "I'm Sarabi. As it happens, Mufasa is my mate, and king of the Pridelands." The other lioness seemed inteligent enough to figure it out on her own just what Sarabi was, and the queen was feeling in-formal today. Probably a by-product of her sudden bout of lonliness and depression. "What is your name, dear, and why did you want to see one of us?"

The white lioness hung her head a little, ashamed at having made herself a fool. "I'm so sorry your highness." She said quietly and hurriedly. She felt so stupid right now, so insignificant. "I didn't know..." She said, again quietly. She flicked her tail and reclined to her own haunches, looking at the queen apologetically. She could feel hotness in her cheeks and rushing throughout the rest ofher body. Flicking her tail again, Avellano made to pull herself forwards, but instead gave the queen a deep bow.

"My name is Avellano miss, I've come from far lands seeking your sanctuary. I'd like to become part of this wonderful pride, if I may be allowed by you and your king." She said. Avellano said it exactly the way she'd said it in her head over and over for the last few days, knowing she was coming closer to the lands, and needing to have something that she could say to one of them, when or if she met one. "I'm terribly sorry if I may have interrupted something ma'am." She said quietly, really feeling bad, as Avellano did not like to intrude upon anything, even if it wasn't something important. The white lioness layed her ears back and blinked at Sarabi, trying not to make it seem like she was staring, but still making sure that Sarabi knew she was paying attention and listening.

Sarabi chuckled softly at the younger lioness, tilting her head gently to one side. "No need to appologize, Avellano. Truly, I'm not sure what you're appologizing for. We don't really stand on status here in the Pridelands, and anyone can come to Mufasa or I for any reason, be it for a request or just to talk." Her voice was a little whistful there are the end, but she listened intently to the second half of the Ave's little speach.

"Not once in our time as King and Queen has a lion or lioness been turned away that came here wanting to make a life. If its what you want, you are very welcome to join us. We're a peaceful pride to all save hyenas, so as long as you don't make trouble or start fights, you'll fit in well here." Her smile was warm as it stretched acrossed her face, her red eyes motherly. "It must be hard to live as a rogue, always by yourself without the protection of a pride. I can see why so many have come here to find a home." The wind picked up there to raise some dust around the edge of the watering hole, and play over the beads of Sarabi's necklace to make them click softly.

Avellano grinned at Sarabi. So this wasn't the scary queen she thought it would be. She released a small sigh, swishing her tail happily. "Thank you your highness." She said, nodding her head, then turning away as the dust blew around, keeping it away from her face. "I don't think I could start a fight even if I wanted to....I'm not as strong as other lioness'" She said quietly, looking slightly ashamed. "I'm no good at hunting either, that's why I was seeking a pride...." The white lioness trailed off, feeling her cheeks grow hot.

As the dust finished blowing around her, Avellano turned back to Sarabi. "Sarabi....I'm really sorry if this is overstepping any boundaries, but you seemed so sad a moment ago, is there anything wrong?" Avellano inquired, not trying to step out of her place, but feeling her caring nature kick in. She flicked her ears, hoping that her curiosity was not mistaken for anything else.

Sarabi's smile turned gentle and a little sad as her eyes fell to her cream-tipped paws. "Oh, its nothing, dear. I was just musing on my life these days. I'm getting on in years now, and I'm not strong like I used to be." She chuckled softly, her tail gently flicking in the dust behind her. "Just an old lioness' ramblings on the 'good ol' days'."

Casting an eye skyward to find a change of subject, she caught sight of how low the sun had grown in the sky. It was about time to start back now, if she hoped to make Priderock by nightfall. A small sigh slipped from her, her expression whistful. Before the plauge, she'd been able to run to the watering hole and back before the sun moved more than a whisker... "Well, Avellano, I think I need to start back to the den now. Why don't you walk with me, and I'll introduce you to whichever of the pride members are around. You said you're not so good at hunting...? Well, for the time being you can share the extra that the hunters bring in. You'll have to learn to hunt so you can earn your place in the pride, or we'll have to think of another job for you to do..." She trailed off as she thought, her necklace bouncing on her chest as she rose stiffly and turned backtowards Priderock, pausing a moment to wait for the white lioness.

The white lioness hopped up and padded after Sarabi, yawning lightly and closing her eyes for a moment in thought. "Oh...I'm really sorry." She said quietly as she caught up, wondering what 'the good old days' had been like here. For Avellano for good old days were back when her pride was still alive, but now they were gone, or...so she thought. They had mostly been gone when her mother was killed.

She sighed a little, feeling incredibly useless as Sarabi said that she'd need to leanr how to hunt. She hadn't been able to hunt her entire life, and she kind of thought it was a little too late for her to learn now. She swished her tail a little as she heard Sarabi's tone turn thoughtful. Another job she could do? Avellano perked her ears and grinned. "But what else would there be that a lioness could do for the pride your highness?" She inquired curtly, again hoping she wasn't stepping out of place. Maybe she sould have just waited for Sarabi to suggest something, if that was indeed what she was now mulling over.

A soft chuckle rolled from the queen's throat as she walked slowly towards Priderock, each paw placed carefully and with minimal effort. She had to save her strength so as to make the least amount of stops as possible on her return trip. The chuckle turned into a vague purr, her red eyes glancing back at the white lioness before turning forward again. "Well... Koho hasn't been around much, and there are always new cubs in need of someone to take care of them. You could be one of our nannies, if you were so inclined. Otherwise..." Her soft voice drifted off her as Sarabi debated voicing the nagging thought she'd been having for quite some time now. But then, what would it really hurt to tell this newcommer of it?

Drawing a breath, Sarabi tentatively started to tell of her plan. "Well, I have also been thinking of a new role for our pride... There are so few of us left that remember the past and the stories that are our history. I am one, as is my mate, Mufasa. But even you can see that I may not be here for much longer. So when I die... the part of our history that is in my mind will die with me. I have been looking for a lion or lioness that would be suitable to pass my knowledge onto, some one who is agile of mind and who I can trust to pass this knowledge on to the cubs of the pride. It is almost a daunting task, learning and memorizing all the stories... but its so necessary..." Sarabi's head lifted as her voice grew in strength and conviction. This role was important... and she felt a great urge to make this new lioness understand that.

Avellano perked her ears, padding a bit faster after the queen, so that she could walk at her side. Swishing her tail slowly behind her, the white lioness furled her brow and poked her tonuge out a little. A nanny? Avellano did love cubs, but that job didn't seem suiting for her. She quickly straightened her face, not wanting Sarabi to see her disapproval. She grinned stupidly when Sarabi said otherwise. So there was something else she could do? The young lioness again flicked her ears forwards, interested in what else the queen could offer her as a job.

She flicked her tail from side to side, listening carefully to what Sarabi was saying. It sounded incredibly important, and to have the job offered to her, as a newcomer, made her feel rather happy. She grinned again, feeling her cheeks grow hot. It sounded exciting, learning all about the pride. Avellano liked the idea of teaching things to the cubs, she did love cubs. "That sounds interesting your highness." Avellano said quietly, brushing the dirt red tip of her tail across her back briefly and then letting it fall back to it's place, still flicking slightly behind her.

The queen turned to look at the younger lioness, her face bright with her strong conviction. "Its an important job, something just as important and difficult as hunting. Our historian needs to know all the past of the pride, as well as know everything that's happening now so they can make it into stories to add to the history. Then that knowledge has to be passed on, imparted to furture generations so all know our past." Her voice was stronger than it had been in a long time, her words rolling quickly from her mouth. Her steps even picked up time, and she never noticed. She'd be exhausted later from the excitement, but right now all she could think about was her idea and this little lioness.

"I have so much knowledge to share, but I know my time on this earth is short. I can't move on till I know the past will be preserved..." Her voice trailed off as she felt the old familiar ache in her limbs, forcing her trotting down to a slow walk, her breath hitching in her chest. Damn this frail body...

The white lioness swished her tail a little more. "It sounds like a lot of work, but I'd really love to. I'm pretty much useless for everything else." She said, feeling her cheeks grow hot again. She felt welcome, special, being offered this job. Looking around at the things around her. This place was so nice, it really felt like a real home. Maybe by living here, in this nice place, she could forget about the horrors of her childhood, the murder of her pride and family.

"I really appreciate this Sarabi. I mean...your highness." She said, turning away, embarassed. She flicked her tail and then looked back at the queen apologetically, laying her ears back and then looking forward again, staring at the huge rock that the royals lived at.

Sarabi smiled and nodded, finally giving into her bodies demand and flopping down in the grass to pant. "I'm sorry, dear, but I need a little rest before we continue on." She huffed gently, her cream sides heaving with her breathes. "And you don't need to call me 'highness', dear... Sarabi is just fine." A gentle smile spread over her face as she looked up at the white lioness, her brown-tufted tail gently flicking against the ground behind her haunches.

While her body slowly regained strength, the queen thought of how she should start Avellano's education. There was so much to teach her... "Well, now... I suppose we'll have to start off with a little bit of the Pride's families. Who's who, and who's related to whom, is something else you should know. You've met me, and my mate is Mufasa, the king. We've had seven cubs, you know..." Her smile was motherly this time, and proud. "Such fine liones they've turned out to be, the ones that have lived."

Avellano looked at her cheerfully. "Of course Sarabi. I'm sorry, I've never met a queen before." She blushed, flicking her tail and looked around for a moment. She shook her head slowly and wrinkled her nose, before giving in to a small sneeze. "Excuse me." She said, slightly embarassed, and blushing deeper. She laid her ears back and then reclined beside Sarabi, grinning widely.

"That sounds really interesting. I can't wait to learn everything about this beautiful place." The white lioness said happily, grinning at Sarabi. "That's sure a lot of cubs." She said quietly, "Far as I know, I was my mother's only..." She trailed off at mention of her mother. "But my mother died right after she had me, that's why I don't really know how to hunt..." She said, trailing off again and then looking at her paws. She looked back up at the queen sadly at her last few words. "I'm terribly sorry...." Avellano added quietly, furling her brow sadly and flicking her tail again.
