So, "You're crazy!" you say. I mean, lets face it, everyone and their grandmother wants an IoDM. "What makes you think YOU deserve one?" After all, there are so many questers besides yourself. Some of these people have been questing for months. Why make this thread now, "Aren't you a little slow on the draw? :/ "

All right, perhaps I am a bit slow. But hey! Better late than never, right? Ah, I still remember when the shop was in it's baby stages. Back then I didn't have much interest. Yes, "What I nifty idea!" I says to myself. "But what kind of character would I have? o-o;" The question plagued me for a long time. However, as months passed, the thread grew it gained many interesting characters as well as owners whom played those characters. Suddenly, inspiration hit, and well, as you can see, the character below you was formed.

I understand this quest may take a very long time to complete. In fact I may never complete it at all. (Heaven forbid that happen though. I'll try do my best with in all my reason.) Perhaps my quest will change. : D I'm not questing to get an IoDM cause "OmFG!" my character is teh greatest! He HAS to be there," or "TeH KOALA IS tEH GREATEST animal! " Rather, I'm questing because I like the shop and enjoy watching the amusing antics of shop goers and islanders alike, and would like to experience the fun first hand. :3

Phew, didn't mean to make that such a long read. ;o;

Name: Charlie Haston
{IMG PENDING}

Gender: Male

Age: 35

Date pf Birth: 10/10/1971

Place of Birth: Denver, Colorado

Home Town: Pahrump, Nevada

Location before arriving at island: Escalante, Utah

Occupation: "Retired" Geologist (Charlie just can't cope with the fact that he was still laid off). <--I'm an idiot. biggrin

Height: 5'11

Weight/Build: 188lbs. Not much can be said for the man's build other than it is...well, normal. Too young for the good old beer belly of ripe age, and yet too old to maintain the fit and trim figure of his youth. He stays between thick and thin, verging on the edge of thick more than thin. The only thing muscular that remains about him are his legs, which rarely see the light of day.

Hair color: Strawberry blonde, thin and messy (with a tendency to frizz up when in a moisture filled area). Charlie's hair is not extraordinarily long for male. However, because the man couldn’t care more or less what others think of his looks, he has neglected to visit the barber for a couple of years now. In an effort to avoid looking like a sheep dog with his hair all in his eyes, Charlie ties the mess into a small pony tail which hangs down to the base of his neck. A pair of sideburns accompany the hair do.

Eye Color: Watery green brown. During his youthful days they were more green with brown, but over time, bad vision and the seasons have left their mark. A of sturdy thick bifocals, now accompany him where ever he goes.

Sexuality: "Woman pleases me not. *Glare's angrily while he is interrupted by a fit of giggles.* ...Nor man. " Charlie is strait. However, the man has never taken much interest in the opposite sex. A few flings here and there have kept him over the years. The thing that would truly make him happy though is a life long partner, one whom he has failed to find so far and shows no interest in finding anytime soon. If anything he will ward off pursuers by pretending to be already happy and well married. Not that he finds many admirers, but when he does he's prepared with a pile of excuses and lies.

Appearance: Geologists have a definite sense of fashion, a sense which Charlie claimed when he took his first job. A hideous brown adventurers hat is usually to be found on his head, something that he is never with out (the wear and tear on the article enough to prove this statement). Jeans are a staple part of Charlie’s appearance as well as a pair of sturdy cowboy boots. As far as clothing for the upper body goes, the red head is a fanatic for cheep cotton shirts with weird saying. Among some of the favorites in his closet are a ripped blue shirt reading, "Darwin" the letters squishing a depiction of Jesus below. A fitting red shirt, "My Dogma ate your Karma" and a favorite black one he splurged on, sporting the designs of Ray Troll (a favored artist of his) "Life's a fish and then you fry". These are all items Charlie wears daily and the same that he probably arrived on the island in.

Items: Although these probably would have been confiscated once he came. Charlie brought a small knapsack of tools to the island, a hammer, some maps of south America (since he planned on this being a mini vacation he assumed after word he could catch a boat and go look for work in south America), and a small chisel. The only possession which would probably have remained on him after arrival is a small golden banned wring. It was a gift from a close friend when he graduated college, but because it was a bit big, Charlie would only put it on for small amounts of time (afraid he would lose it). Even if his ring was a bit too big, he would never just keep it locked away in some dusty jewelry box. It holds too much sentimental value.

Likes: The sun, Music which he deems as songs from "The good old days" (Lots of the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, The Beatles, Steppenwolf etc.), Beer (Ah, beer. His favorite and only vice.), A good joke, Gold and Lapis Lazuli, the scent of Lilac, The fourth of July, the beautiful desert, helping the environment (in his own way) and Salmon.

Dislikes: People whom are uptight, Politicians, Developers, His bad luck, Urban areas, Yuppies.

Hobbies: Charlie enjoys collecting old and warn out items that others see no use for. It started during his geologist days...a rusted license plate here, a old shoe there...and turned into small ridiculous things such as worn out rubber bands and tattered pants. He also plays the harmonica and backpacks when ever he can find the means to do so.

Personality : What's best to be said about Charlie is that he is a "Salt O' The Earth" type fellow. He grew up during the late seventies, missing the most of the peace and love fever. Although the vibes seemed to not have touched him, the music of the era did as well as the philosophies. Charlie is not a very uptight individual, the man has a "relax and kick back" attitude. Even though Charlie has some drive in life, he has no idea what he's driving towards. His goal in the great scheme of things is ...well, he's not sure what it is. But, it will hit him someday! Until then, he will keep working towards it, whatever it is.

Charlie's attitude is what got him into his religious practices. Charlie isn't into church or worship or any of that nonsense. But practices Buddhist techniques such as meditation and also dapples in Zen practices, like Yoga. Although not the most devout subject, Charlie is avid enough in his practices to understand the ideals behind the subjects.

Besides his Zen loving self, Charlie upholds a loosely based "All Natural" life style. Living out in a dilapidated shack on the verge of civilization, the man only pays the water bill. Heat or air conditioning come from a small generator, and electricity? Well, who needs that? Batteries or Oil lamps are the only two objects which the man uses to see in the dark. A staple diet of wild salmon jerky and beer keep Charlie happy. He'll shy away from most prepackaged store-bought food, and believes everything tastes better when it comes directly from the source to your mouth.

People say the items that you surround yourself with portray whom you are. Like his house, Charlie’s personality is a bit rough about the edges. The man is often rude and crude in the company of others, dropping inappropriate jokes loaded with innuendo or racial slurs. Never politically correct Charlie won't shy away from topics some would consider politically incorrect. You'd think eventually this would lead to him being stabbed or something like that. Luckily Charlie is an excellent lair and it’s easy for him to act one way to get what he wants. Yet, this tact is not the mans style, and ultimately if you just rub him the wrong way, he won't be afraid to express to you.

Other Character Notes: All in all Charlie is not an unlikable fellow. It would be easy to make friends with him without really trying. But like most good people their is a sinister side which lives within his hollowed shell. Nothing too drastic really, simply a snap which comes about him now and then. After being laid of in the mid nineties, Charlie went through a crisis in his life. What do you do when the only job you know and love has suddenly been taken away from you?

Needless to say, he didn't take it well. In an effort to cope, Charlie took out his anger by using America's greed as a scapegoat. He blamed the greedy politicians that were raping America of her resources, as culprits of his unhappiness. They were destroying the one and only thing he held dear, his beloved beauty of Americas natural deserts. Now they were taking away the only thing left that really mattered to him.

Setting aside his old ways, Charlie picked up a day job as a forest ranger and by night began to play Eco-terrorist. He never did anything too horrible, burning a billboard here, destroying a barbed fence there...it was always a little inconvenience for the slime bags in the city.

The man is never unkind or malicious. Yet, I would hate to do something in front of Charlie such as litter the ground or try to discuss the latest and greatest rage in pop culture. You might find yourself getting burned.

About the Desert Tortoise

Scientific Name: Gopherus agassizii

Weight: 8-15lbs

Length:9-15"

Height: 4-6"

Sexual Maturity: 15-20 Years

Mating Season: Aug-October

Lifespan: 80-100 Years.

Typical diet: Herbs, Flowers, Grasses

Description: The Desert Tortoise is an herbivore that may attain a length of 9 to 15 inches in the upper shell carapace) length. Desert Tortoises are flat and pear-shaped and active in summer but will seek shade under large rocks and boulders. The presence of soil suitable for digging burrows is a limiting factor to Desert Tortoise distribution. Some of their burrows just extend beyond the shell of the tortoise inside. Others extend for several feet. A single tortoise may have a dozen or more burrows distributed over its home range. These burrows may be used by different tortoises at different times. The tortoise is able to live where ground temperature may exceed 140 degrees F because of its ability to dig underground burrows and escape the heat. At least 95% of its life is spent in burrows. There, it is also protected from freezing while dormant, November through February or March.

Vocalization: Desert Tortoises make hisses, pops and poink sounds, perhaps as fear and distress calls. Males to grunt when mating.

Horn: Both sexes have a gular horn -- an anterior extension of the plastron (lower shell). The horn is longer in males and often upturned. Males use these in fighting with other males, attempting to insert the horn under the anterior edge of the carapace and by twisting to the side, flip the other male on its back. The opponent attempts to stand as high as possible to prevent this from happening.

Feet: The tortoise's hind limbs differ markedly from the forelimbs. Whereas the hind limbs are elephantine, the forelimbs are flattened with well-developed muscle. They are used for digging burrows. The females use their hind limbs to dig their nests.

Behavior: Fighting may occur at anytime that males encounter one another and usually ends in the subordinate male running away from the other. Where there are cavities in partially consolidated gravels with room for several tortoises, males and females will share theses cover sites. The males may begin to fight upon emerging each day but the importance of adequate cover for protection against extreme heat seems to be greater than maintaining the dominance hierarchy.

To maximize the utilization of infrequent rainfall, tortoises dig catchment basins in the soil, remember where these are, and may be found waiting by them when rain appears imminent. Water that reaches the bladder is not lost to the system but can be drawn upon as needed.

Much of the tortoise’s water intake comes from moisture in the grasses and wildflowers they consume in the spring. During very dry times they may give off waste as a white paste rather than a watery urine. Adult tortoises may survive a year or more without access to water.

Story Time! Told by Charlie himself.

Images to come soon

I've never been lucky. It's just a fact. I suppose that's how I ended up on this damn island.

It all began with my folks. Ma and Pa...I guess it all went down hill when on the day of my 18th birthday. They kicked me out of the house, "Lazy bum!" the shouted Ma', "Get a job ...and a haircut" added Pa'.

Eventually I came across some money and worked my way into college. I had no idea what I was doing...and didn't care. But at the end of four years I was standing on a stage with my class holding a geology degree in my hand. Don’t ask me how that happened.

Ah, life sure was great. I couldn't be happier with my situation. I had a job I loved, friends ...and the income was good. Then, suddenly, it stopped; again it was a turn for the worse.

The fall in the price of gold in the mid-nineties left my company in crises. Being the Jr. member on the team, I was laid off first.

After that I lost interest in life. I went into a horrible depression, living in a ditch for a good couple of months. Eventually I was found by a couple of Jehovah witnesses and rescued.

I began to think. Eventually, I came to believe that modern man in his capitalist society is evil. We take and destroy the beautiful earth around his, claming that it is a "wasteland". My life had new purpose...

Things were once again good. Work during the day, burn things at night. Playing the role of environmental terrorist was fun. But the dream could only last for so long. Tools are expensive...besides the police were beginning to catch on to me.

That's when I spotted the add in the paper. Free room and board...on some exotic island? Well ...I wasn't too sure bout the island gig. But it did say free. I called, and was gladly accepted. 'Besides,' I told myself, 'where your going is just a hop skip and jump away from South America, maybe there's work down there.'

It was as they say, "too good to be true" and it really was. Now I'm going to be stuck as turning into some sort of turtle...erm, tortoise I mean. But that's all right...I think I'll be steady with it. Like I said, I a'int lucky.
