Statutory rape is not bullshit because the laws are in place to protect minors - in this case, you.
If you are caught having sex with your boyfriend, he can go to jail. So this means that he might go to jail, he might be labeled as a child molestor for the rest of his life, etc. It has serious, serious consequences that you obviously haven't considered. Getting in trouble iwth the law would affect his family, his future career, what kind of job he can get, etc.
It would be advisable to wait until you're of legal age to have sex with someone older, unless you want to risk getting caught and him getting in legal trouble.

Agreed. It's incredibly stupid and naive to pishposh age as just a number. If love really matters, then looking and acknowledging the law is part of that. My husband and I are 6 years apart, but I would be disgusted and I would be ashamed of my son if he was 18 dating a 12 year old.

I believe that law is a good law.
Even though I'm 19yrs and my boyfriend is 39yrs.
Yea, I know! 20 years age diff.
People underage can and have been taken advantage of. Having sex when they're pressured to, having babies when they're not ready to, not ever having a parents aproval, and being looked at distastefully while in public.
That law is there to protect the young and innocent, even if they're not so innocent as still being a virgin.

It's still illegal. An adult dating a child, and being interested in a child is not normal, regardless of whether or not you want to believe that. A normal, healthy adult should not be romantically interested in a child.

I had a 20 year old boyfriend when I was just 15 & 16. It didn't turn out well.
Just make sure he's a good guy and you'll be fine.

Just because someone is a legal adult does make them immune to being taken advantage of.
There is no secret book you get when you turn 18 that gives you all the answers.
It just goes by general maturity. Usually, 19 year olds are more sexually and emotionally mature than 15 year olds. 19 year olds have normally finished high school, and are starting college, while a 15 year old could very well be a freshman.
But there is a Proximity of Age law/clause/whatever, that if the children are within 4 years of each other's age, and neither are below 12 or above 18, then the law can't touch them.

i really hate this law because there is alot of emotion behind it... i say it depends on the couple .. lets say theirs a 17 year old and a 20 year old thats ok to me because it only a 4 year difference... but when it comes to an age difference bigger than five theres a problem... i was in a relationship like PLENTY of times and from experience it only leads to heart breaks so its not worth it

I know its against the law, but my boyfriend is 3 yrs. younger than I am and he has done things that a person my age would never do, for me. I'm 19 by-the-way. I'm not saying it's right, but sometimes you cant help it.

I'm not saying it's right, but sometimes you cant help it. Hence the reason there's that law again where when it's within a certain range (four years, usually) that it's alright... so if you're 17 and so's your boyfriend, you can still have sex when he turns 19 before you legally, etc. I think the law is great. The legal limit is there because of the general maturity level of people under the legal age. When you're 14, no matter how smart or mature you think you are, having sex with an 18 year old is still not appropriate. You're on two completely different wave lengths, points in your lives, and more likely than not, you're being taken advantage of or peer pressured into it. They put that law in place to discourage underage sex so people will (hopefully) wait until they're old enough to handle any emotions or whathaveyou that can go along with sex.

The 16 age limit is for legally being allowed to leave home without your parents being able to do anything about it (ie. if they call the cops to take you home, the cops will do nothing). Just to get things straight. smile As for the law...I completely agree with it. There are laws for a reason. If you're really in love as you say, then like has already been mentioned, you'll take the law into consideration. Is sex really necessary in a relationship at that age? Does having sex mean the difference between him loving you and leaving you? Seriously, a relationship shouldn't be based on sex, particularilly not at that age. Don't get me wrong, sex is very much a part of a normal adult relationship, but at that age it isn't quite as necessary. The laws ARE there to help protect children. Despite what you or people your age may think, you are NOT invincible, you do NOT know everything, and life is NOT a fairytale. So...yes, I agree that the law is important and meaningful.
